A man was beaten and robbed of his cell phone in an attack on Halsted Street near Buckingham Place in the Boystown neighborhood. Police are searching for the suspects who robbed and beat a man as he walked early Monday in the Boystown neighborhood.
The 24-year-old man was walking at 3341 N. Halsted St., near Buckingham Place, around 4:50 a.m. Monday when four men attacked him, police said.
Since Thursday, there have been at least five similar attacks in the Lincoln Park neighborhood about a mile and a half south. In those incidents, a group of at least four attackers sneaked up on the victims from behind and beat them savagely as they robbed them.
Those attacks happened Thursday in the 600 block of West Fullerton Parkway and the 2100 block of North Stockton Drive; Saturday in the 2000 block of North Cleveland Avenue and the 300 block of West Webster Avenue; and Tuesday at Fullerton and Cannon drives. All of the victims were young men walking alone.
The address where the attack occurred is outside Minibar, one of many gay bars and nightclubs that line the Boystown strip on Halsted Street. It is not known whether police are investigating if sexual orientation could have played any role in the motive for the attack.

U.S. soldiers have been accused of aiding in the execution of gay Iraqis, the Washington Blade reports. The accusations were made by two unnamed, gay Iraqi refugees during a fundraiser event at the Human Rights Campaign headquarters.
Several violent images of a beheaded gay Iraqi were shown to the audience by one of the men, who goes by the name “Hussam.” He shocked the audience by claiming U.S. soldiers have also detained and executed Iraqi men perceived to be gay.
Images were shown of a U.S. soldier standing over a group of naked men chained together who Hussam claims were gay. Hussam said he possesses images of their execution but did not show them to the audience.

Hawaii coach Greg McMackin apologized Thursday for making a derogatory remark usually directed toward gays while describing Notre Dame's chant during a dinner banquet leading up to last year's Hawaii Bowl. McMackin used the slur during a media briefing at the Western Athletic Conference football preview in Salt Lake City. After the remark, he uttered it two more times while trying to explain himself. After the briefing, McMackin returned to the reporters and apologized for using the "inappropriate" word.

"What I was trying to do was be funny and it wasn't funny," he said, according to a recording of the conversation posted on the Idaho Statesman's Web site. "It's not funny. Even more, it isn't funny to me. I was trying to make a joke and it was a bad choice of words. And I really, really feel bad about it. ... It was really stupid."The school followed up with a formal statement by McMackin.
"I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate words that I used," he said in the statement. "My comments were out of character and I have no prejudices against anyone. I'm really upset with myself and I'm truly sorry for my remarks."WAC commissioner Karl Benson said McMackin's offensive comments brought negative publicity to the conference, "at an event where the purpose was to promote the WAC in a positive manner."
"While his comments clearly violate the WAC Code of Conduct, I will wait until the University of Hawaii determines its course of action before determining what sanctions the WAC may impose," Benson wrote in an e-mail.The second-year Warriors coach said he has nothing but respect for the Fighting Irish, who routed the Warriors 49-21 for their first postseason victory in 15 years. McMackin called it the worst loss in his 40 years of coaching. Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan, who called Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick to apologize on behalf of the university, said he will meet with McMackin on Friday.
"I've conveyed my disappointment to him and he has expressed deep regret for showing such poor judgment," Donovan said. He has also served as defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and several college programs including Texas Tech, Miami, Navy, Utah and Idaho. The news of the comments spread fast in the islands where McMackin is widely known as a warm and caring leader who often reaches out to the community.
"I'm repulsed," said Carolyn Golojuch, a UH alumnus and president of the Oahu chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbian and Gays.She said there's a larger issue at hand with the "atmosphere of fear" in football.
"This goes on all the time. This is not an isolated incident. Football coaches, not just ours, continue to be abusive," Golojuch said. "Why do professional football players come out of the closet after they retire? Because of fear."This is not the first time a Hawaii athletic figure issued an apology for using insensitive language. Former athletic director Hugh Yoshida said in 2000 that the reason the university switched from its longtime Rainbow logo was in part due to its connection as a symbol for gays and lesbians.
"That logo really put a stigma on our program at times in regards to it's part of the gay community, their flags and so forth," Yoshida said then, a day after the current Polynesian-style "H" logo was unveiled.Yoshida quickly apologized for his comments.

America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
Billie Jean King was an acclaimed professional tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s, and has helped champion gender equality issues not only in sports, but in all areas of public life. King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, then the most viewed tennis match in history. King became one of the first openly lesbian major sports figures in America when she came out in 1981. Following her professional tennis career, King became the first woman commissioner in professional sports when she co-founded and led the World Team Tennis (WTT) League. The U.S. Tennis Association named the National Tennis Center, where the US Open is played, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2006.

Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official from a major city in the United States when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk encouraged lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens to live their lives openly and believed coming out was the only way they could change society and achieve social equality. Milk, alongside San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, was shot and killed in 1978 by Dan White, a former city supervisor. Milk is revered nationally and globally as a pioneer of the LGBT civil rights movement for his exceptional leadership and dedication to equal rights.

Cleveland and Akron are rolling out the rainbow-colored carpet this weekend in hopes of nabbing the 2014 Gay Games. Site selectors for the Federation of Gay Games are touring the two cities over the next three days to help determine if Northeast Ohio can host the Olympics-style competition.
Cleveland is one of three finalists for the sporting event, which is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation. Boston and Washington, D.C., are the other potential hosts.
Organizers are holding a free public party — dubbed ''Frivolity'' — at 8 p.m. today at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum on Cleveland's lakefront. They hope thousands of people show up to demonstrate their support for the event.
The suggested theme for the Cleveland Gay Games is ''My Games Rock.''
The Gay Games, held every four years, started in San Francisco in 1982. Chicago and Sydney, Australia, also have hosted the competition. Next year, the event will be in Cologne, Germany.
The 2014 host city will be announced Sept. 29 in Cologne. The competition could lure up to 65,000 athletes and spectators to Northeast Ohio, and have a $60 million to $80 million economic impact on the region, organizers say.
Even though Cleveland is the official host, Akron would play a large role. Firestone Country Club has volunteered to host the men's and women's golf tournaments. Softball games would be held at Firestone Stadium, the home of the Akron Racers professional team. Rodeo events would be at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge. And the marathon would follow the route of the established Road Runner Akron Marathon.
''This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,'' said Susan Hamo, president of the Akron and Summit County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is helping with the effort to land the event.
She estimated that the economic benefit to the Akron area from direct spending alone could be $12 million. Hamo also said the games would bring national and international exposure to Akron. ''I don't know how we put a price on that,'' she said. Hamo dismissed any potential criticism by anti-gay groups.
Three Gay Games site selectors will visit various sports venues, study public transportation and gauge the community's overall desire to host the competition this weekend.
''It's a big event,'' said Dennis Sneyers, one of the site selectors who lives in Chicago. ''It's very similar to the Olympics but it doesn't get the media exposure.'' He organized Chicago's bid for the 2006 competition before becoming a site selector. He also has participated in the Gay Games.
Sneyers estimated that the event had a $35 million to $40 million economic impact on Chicago. It boosted tourism before and after the competition, and increased the athletic participation of gays and lesbians in the community, he added. Sneyers and the other site selectors will be in Akron on Saturday. County Executive Russ Pry and Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic plan to attend a lunch at Firestone Country Club to offer their support.
The site selectors will visit Boston and Washington after Cleveland.

Even though Cleveland is the official host, Akron would play a large role. Firestone Country Club has volunteered to host the men's and women's golf tournaments. Softball games would be held at Firestone Stadium, the home of the Akron Racers professional team. Rodeo events would be at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge. And the marathon would follow the route of the established Road Runner Akron Marathon.
''This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,'' said Susan Hamo, president of the Akron and Summit County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is helping with the effort to land the event.
She estimated that the economic benefit to the Akron area from direct spending alone could be $12 million. Hamo also said the games would bring national and international exposure to Akron. ''I don't know how we put a price on that,'' she said. Hamo dismissed any potential criticism by anti-gay groups.
Three Gay Games site selectors will visit various sports venues, study public transportation and gauge the community's overall desire to host the competition this weekend.
''It's a big event,'' said Dennis Sneyers, one of the site selectors who lives in Chicago. ''It's very similar to the Olympics but it doesn't get the media exposure.'' He organized Chicago's bid for the 2006 competition before becoming a site selector. He also has participated in the Gay Games.
Sneyers estimated that the event had a $35 million to $40 million economic impact on Chicago. It boosted tourism before and after the competition, and increased the athletic participation of gays and lesbians in the community, he added. Sneyers and the other site selectors will be in Akron on Saturday. County Executive Russ Pry and Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic plan to attend a lunch at Firestone Country Club to offer their support.
The site selectors will visit Boston and Washington after Cleveland.

Former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss recently planned to open "Heidi's Stud Farm" near Pahrump, but gave up the effort this year after being arrested on felony drug charges. Flint says other brothels have offered male prostitutes over the years, with little success. He argues that the business model for a brothel that caters to women just doesn't pencil out.
Licensing male prostitutes might be a problem. State law allows for legal prostitutes of both genders, but the health codes that regulate the business largely are written to apply to female prostitutes. That includes a requirement that the working girls have mandatory cervical exams. "It's kind of hard to do that with a man," Davis said.
Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo, whose office administers work cards for prostitutes, said he's aware of Davis' plan and has sought legal advice from the district attorney.
Meanwhile, Davis is drawing up her help wanted ad. She said she'll be looking for one or two men "in good shape, in their mid-30s to 50s." Asked about the age range, she notes that's another way women differ from men.

"We've had requests for men in the past, and there's nothing else like this out there."Indeed, the 25 legal brothels scattered throughout 10 rural Nevada counties are staffed by women and cater to men. The Shady Lady, however, isn't the only one thinking about hiring male prostitutes. Nevada Brothel Association lobbyist George Flint says other brothels have approached him with the idea lately to drum up business. Like Nevada's gambling, hotel and convention industries, the prostitution business has hit hard times. Flint estimates that bordellos have seen a roughly 50 percent drop in revenue since the economy turned sour.
"Business is so bad right now, I think brothels would do anything to survive. Disposable income is just in short supply at the moment," he said.
