Twitter Warns Of Increased Outages And "Rocky" Service

Twitter says record traffic has contributed to more than five hours of downtime this month on the micro-blogging site and is warning users that the next few weeks will be "rocky" as engineers try to solve a number of technical problems. Twitter acknowledged in a blog post that in terms of site stability and service outages, June is on track to be one of the site's worst months since August 2009. In trying to fix the technical issues, the site has uncovered "unexpected deeper issues" that have caused recent outages and will take time to correct. In trying to correct the problems, Twitter expects a "rocky few weeks." "Record traffic and unprecedented spikes in activity are never simple to manage," the site said Tuesday. A major contributor to the traffic spike is the month-long World Cup soccer competition, which started June 11. While Twitter believed it was ready for the expected increase in traffic, "what we didn't anticipate was some of the complexities that have been inherent in fixing and optimizing our systems before and during the event." Even before the World Cup, traffic on Twitter was booming. In May, users posted nearly 2 billion tweets, or 64 million a day, according to Web site metrics firm Pingdom. Tweets are short messages that Twitter users broadcast to friends, family, and other followers. So far this month, Twitter has suffered almost five and half hours of downtime and large bursts of errors, which have lowered its average June uptime to 98.55%, according to Pingdom. By comparison, the site's uptime in May was 99.77%, when it suffered only an hour and 40 minutes of downtime. Over the next couple of weeks, Twitter plans to perform relatively short planned maintenance that will likely force the company to take down its service. "We will not perform this work during World Cup games, and we will provide advance notification," the site said. Twitter has a status blog where it posts real-time updates on site outages.

HOT NEW WEBSITE: Gaysurfers website

A new site called Gaysurfers.net is hoping to attract the attention of the world’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender surfers. Surfing is often seen as a macho sport where many fear rejection for being gay. In the past, some professionals who came out lost their sponsorships. So, to provide more solidarity among LGBT surfers worldwide, gaysurfers.net came to be. Membership is anonymous, free, and secure. Among the site’s offerings are gay surfing articles, lists of LGBT friendly surf spots, and a list of films inspired by “gay” and “surf” themes. If you like charging the waves (and you’re gay) then reach for your mouse and point it to Gaysurfers.net.

John McCain iPhone Pic Finds Way to Gay Porn Web Site

Back in January, Senator John McCain's daughter, Meghan, told an audience at the University of Florida that her father was "coming along" in terms of supporting gay marriage. If you believe everything you see on gay porn Web sites, "The Maverick" seems to be making enormous strides. McCain's image was found on a gay porn Web site called Guys With iPhones over the weekend. Guys With iPhones is a site where men post photos they take of themselves while clutching their iPhones. In many cases, however, those men are often naked and clutching their junk, too. McCain (thankfully) is fully clothed in his pic, and how the image came to find its way onto a gay porn site is almost as funny as seeing Arizona's senior senator's image grouped in with hundreds of naked, gay men -- all dawning that come-hither stare. Apparently, in an attempt to show voters how hip he truly is, McCain used his iPhone to take a photo of himself for his Twitter page to prove that he actually knows how to use the iPhone. Because there is currently no "app" to directly upload photos from the iPhone to Guys With iPhones, images need to be submitted by e-mail or be directly uploaded to the site from a computer, which makes it easy to submit just about any picture someone can find on the internet. The McCain camp insists that "The Maverick" isn't the one who posted the photo, but rather someone took the image from his Twitter page and submitted it without his knowledge. Like most public Web forums, users can comment on the photos posted on Guys With iPhones and people had plenty to say about seeing McCain's mug on the site. Here's one of our favorite comments: "Whoa, this is Guys With iPhone, not old hag Republicans with iPhones! We have standards here!" Ummm, it's a Web site where gay guys post pictures of their penises -- exactly what standards are we talking about here? story from Phoenix News Blog

Grindr Glitch Causes Panic & Rumour Among iPhone Users!

Gay cruising app Grindr is once again available for download in the iTunes App Store. Grindr creator Joel Simkhai confirmed that the app is alive and well. "Error on my part," he told Queerty. "Should be back up by EOD [end of day] today." Following the news that Grindr was missing from the iTunes App Store this morning, Twitter lit up with panicked tweets suggesting that Apple deleted the app. Apple controls the approval of all iPhone apps, and they're notoriously strict when it comes to sexy apps. It's good to know that today's Grindr incident was just a glitch, but there's still the troubling fact that Apple requires all apps to comply with prudish guidelines. As we've seen in the past month, Apple continues to reject and delete apps that are too sexy. REPORTED FROM  XTRA.CA

VERY IMPORTANT: Let’s Queer the 2010 Census!

The 2010 Census is underway. Ads have hit the networks urging Americans to return census forms. "We can't move forward," the commercial says, "until you mail it back!" How many gay people are there in the United States? The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, a sexual orientation law and public policy think tank, estimates that there are 8.8 million gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons in the U.S based on the 2005/2006 American Community Survey, an extension of the U.S. Census (Gary J. Gates, 2006, "Same-Sex Couples and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Population: New Estimates from the American Community Survey"). Last week the Bureau launched an online mapping tool that shows community return and participation rates, allowing neighborhoods to track their progress and see previous return rates. "The future of your community starts with a look at its past," Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves says. Well, unfortunately for LGBT people, history will repeat itself since the government will not collect data on gay, lesbian, bi or trans individuals. Even if individuals were able to designate sexuality, online access may limit new methods of outreach. The Joint Center For Political And Economic Studies publication National Minority Broadband Adoption: Comparative Trends in Adoption, Acceptance and Use suggests that "those who stand the most to gain from the Internet, especially insofar as the Internet is used to break the poverty cycle are not in a position to benefit from it." Census data is used as a basis for government fund distribution and since more LGBT people live in poverty than previously thought, it is unclear whether the new online tools could effectively measure the LGBT population or assist LGBT people living in poverty. The good news is: The Bureau will track same-sex couple data. The U.S. Constitution stipulates that every American be counted in the once-a-decade survey. The Census Bureau facilitates what types of data is collected. There are, however, reasons why you won't not be counted. Here's information you need to know about the 2010 census. You can also help 'queer' the census by joining the QueerTheCensus movement on Twitter and Facebook.

Who Wants To Meet A Millionaire? The Ultimate Sugar-Daddies Online, Enter The Gay Millionaires Club

mainpic_gayEnter the Gay Millionaires Club (GMC), a matchmaking service for the well-to-do. Started by Jill Hankoff in February 2001,GMC acts as a “headhunter,” working to find the right partner for the extremely successful gay man. “ Dating is supposed to be fun,” says Hankoff. “That’s where we come in. We date them for you. We find out—based on what you have given us—who is the best person for you. We are in charge of smoothing out the edges.” All GMC clients are men who have a minimum net worth of $1 million. Hankoff has been actively connecting highly successful, professional gay men since 1994 when she set up an exclusive dining club called the Gay Gourmet at upscale social functions for gay men. “I noticed that most gay guys did not have the time or the desire to go to these parties, though they did want to find a partner,” says Hankoff.“ They all achieved their success during their 20s and 30s and were too busy to meet the man of their dreams.”

league-of-gay-millionaires

main01Through an extensive search, relationship minded applicants are brought in and prescreened for the Gay Millionaires—a process that is free for the applicant. “As an applicant, you could be a business owner or you could be a dishwasher. It doesn’t matter. Our clients are all different and want different things,” explains Hankoff.“ Our staff meets all applicants in person to get a more complete idea of them and see if they would be a good match for the client.” According to Hankoff, GMC clients are not trust-fund babies, but men who have earned every penny of their fortune through hard work and shrewd business dealings. Though GMC does primarily have love on its mind, it will also sponsor a team at the upcoming AIDS/LifeCycle 6 in June 2007, a seven-day 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles benefiting the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. The team—LovePedalers—aims to raise $150,000 collectively, including the required $2,500per rider. Hankoff is hoping to fill the team with up to 20 riders. Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to contact GMC. With 20 riders and $2,500 raised individually, only $100,000 has to be raised to meet the team goal. “We’re looking for corporate donations or other fundraising opportunities to reach the rest of our goal,” says Hankoff.“ If someone wants to donate the use of their restaurant for fundraising ,we’ll take that. We can use whatever we can get.” main10GMC will introduce clients confidentially and discreetly, essentially acting as their personal "headhunter". GMC screens and qualifies all candidates, and presents only the most qualified individuals. GMC works with each client individually on a consulting basis. The service is FREE to attractive, intelligent, sincere, and relationship-minded men.  Each candidate has an in-depth interview before ever being introduced to a millionaire client. Though it may seem they have it all—a flashy car, a great job with expense account, and a net worth of no less than a million dollars, even the wealthiest of men can get lonely in their hillside spreads. Jet-setting their way to the New York office for an impromptu board meeting or running their own successful companies seldom leaves gay millionaires time to hit the social scene or wade through the ever daunting dating pool. Mark’s List Bought And Will Re-Launch 411 Magazine

marks_listA popular South Florida gay website announced Monday it will launch a companion weekly magazine and biweekly newspaper following the sudden closure Sunday of the nation's largest gay newspaper group. Multimedia Platforms of Oakland Park, which co-owns South Florida-based Mark's List, a gay website with about 5,000 unique visitors daily, next week will launch Mark's List Magazine, a Florida bar and entertainment guide. A newspaper, still unnamed, will begin Nov. 26, said Bobby Blair, managing partner and founder of Multimedia Platforms. "Our focus for the future, and the importance of this transaction, is owning the No. 1 LGBT website," Blair said. "It will certainly sustain our print operation and also will grow." Washington, D.C.-based Window Media and sister company Unite Media on Sunday announced plans to file for bankruptcy, immediately shutting down its papers and magazines in Wilton Manors, Houston, Atlanta and Washington. Last year, the U.S. Small Business Administration took control of Window Media/Unite Media's majority stockholder, financially troubled New York-based Avalon Equity Partners. Blair's group had been negotiating since September with Avalon Equity to purchase the company's South Florida properties, The South Florida Blade newspaper and 411 magazine, a bar guide. The Blade printed 8,500 copies a week; 411 printed 12,500, according to Blair. letter Multimedia Platforms put $250,000 in escrow with Wilton Manors attorney Dean Trantalis. Blair and his partners had planned to buy The Blade and 411 for $175,000 and invest the rest in the business, he said. Window Media/Unite Media decided to filed for bankruptcy after its owners decided to stop putting money in the company, Blair said. That's when Multimedia Platforms decided "we don't need them anymore," said Mark Haines, founder of Mark's List, who recently sold half his company to Blair's group. Multimedia Platforms quickly decided to take the money held in escrow and use it to start a new newspaper and magazine, Haines said. First order of business: hire all the displaced workers at The Blade and 411. "We have everything we need," Haines said. "We have all the contacts, telephone numbers, everything we need to go forward." When the newspaper launches, it will emphasize feature stories rather than hard news. "We're going to make sure it becomes more topical, more lifestyle oriented and more specific to South Florida. A real estate section, movie reviews, restaurant reviews," Blair said. The Blade, a money loser, is history. A final issue of profitable 411 -- already completed before Window Media/Unite Media locked out its workers -- will hit the newsstands Thursday, he said. South Florida's gay media market has been in flux for a decade. South Florida's oldest gay newspaper, TWN (The Weekly News), ran out of money and shut down after 29 years in March 2006. In 2003, Broward attorney Norm Kent sold his 3-year-old, Broward-based Express Gay News to Window Media/Unite Media, which renamed it The South Florida Blade. Blair believes that despite universal troubles in the media world, his group can make a success of the expanded Mark's List brand. "You have a tremendous amount of LGBT-friendly businesses who would love to reach out to the powerful LGBT buying power," Blair said. "That will bode well for growth. They will want to place ads in our publication."
