Review: Stonewall Uprising

"It was the Rosa Parks moment," says one man. June 28, 1969: NYC police raid a Greenwich Village Mafia-run gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. For the first time, patrons refuse to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a 3-day riot that launches the Gay Rights Movement. Told by Stonewall patrons, reporters and the cop who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising recalls the bad old days when psychoanalysts equated homosexuality with mental illness and advised aversion therapy, and even lobotomies; public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals; and police entrapment was rampant. At the height of this oppression, the cops raid Stonewall, triggering nights of pandemonium with tear gas, billy clubs and a small army of tactical police. The rest is history. (Karen Cooper, Director, Film Forum)

Praise for Kate Davis and David Heilbroner's STONEWALL UPRISING

"VALUABLE! The most thorough exploration...of what came to be known as gay pride." - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"PICK FOR THE WEEK! Kate Davis and David Heilbroner's taut documentary compellingly evokes the "Rosa Parks moment" of the gay-rights movement." -TIME Magazine

"CRITICS PICK! This riveting, powerful documentary packs quite a punch, presenting not only a recollection of a pivotal moment in the gay-rights movement, but also a concise history of American attitudes toward homosexuality." -New York Magazine

"Essential...masterful...pitch-perfect! Kate Davis and David Heilbroner's essential new history of the events and repercussions of the Stonewall riots is about as expert a piece of analytic documentary filmmaking as can be conceived. The filmmakers masterfully unpack the cultural mores and revolutionary undercurrents of the '60s that led to the explosive mix of bigotry, passion, fear, and politics that coalesced outside Greenwich Village's Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969." -Arthur Ryel-Lindsey, Slant Magazine

"A wealth of archive footage and eye-witness interviews. . . I laughed, I cried, I loved it." -Tim Macavoy, Inside Movies

"Stirring...an absolute must-see! You'll swell with gratitude and joy as the pride spreads like wildfire."- Metrosource Magazine

STREET STUDY: Gay & Homeless

Homelessness is an incalculable epidemic. Estimates of youth homelessness range from 575,000 to approximately 2 million. Definitive numbers are difficult to get, but it is believed the LGBT community makes up approximately 20 to 30 percent of homeless youth aged 12 to 24 years old — a disproportionate amount if the LGBT community makes up anywhere from three to ten percent of the general population. Among the homeless LGBT community, African-Americans and American Indians are over-represented. Counting LGBT homeless youth or adults is difficult, primarily because many homeless agencies do not track or report numbers on the sexual orientation or gender-identity of their clients. In late February, however, Charlotte, North Carolina housing officials and local homeless ministry conducted a survey to compile a “vulnerability index” in an effort to understand the problem of homelessness, and end it. The survey included questions to identify the numbers of transgender people living on the streets in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County LGBT youth are on the streets for a variety of reasons. According to a 2007 report issued by the National Alliance to End Homelessness about 25 percent of these youth leave home because of familial rejection. Many homeless people turn to prostitution or other survival techniques — exposing themselves to drug abuse, HIV infection or the possibility of being a victim of rape or a hate crime. The study said lesbians are more likely to experience post-traumatic stress syndrome, conduct disorder and alcohol and substance abuse compared to their straight counterparts. In the same study gay homeless males are less likely to meet criteria for alcohol abuse than their heterosexual homeless peers, but they were more likely to have episodes of depression or depressive disorders. Both lesbians and gay men are at a higher risk of attempting suicide when compared with their peers. The Homelessness Resource Center suggests outreach and education to families as a means of reducing the number of LGBT youths on the street. But when education fails, and youth are left without a home, many are unable to find reliable, consistent, safe housing due to lack of funding. Recently, national attention has been drawn to the epidemic. The Advocate reported last August that late actress Bea Arthur left $300,000 to a homeless shelter for LGBT youth in New York. A few months later singer Lady Gaga partnered with Virgin Mobile to raise awareness about youth homelessness. A 2007 New York Times article reort funding for LGBT youth programs narrowly exceeded $1 million—less than 1 percent of all funds spent on homelessness issues each year. There are no shelters for LGBT youth in the Carolinas, although several areas provide awareness programs, education, and counseling from volunteers. Work by seasoned professionalsis simply out of the question, according to Steve Bentley, executive director of Time Out Youth (TOY) in Charlotte. TOY receives 60 percent of its funding from fundraisers and private donations. Local companies supply the remaining 40 percent. “Time Out Youth receives no funding from the government,” Bentley said. The lack of funds limits what TOY is able to accomplish. Because of that lack of resources, Bentley says real family support to keep children at home and off the streets is the best option. TOY provides counseling and education for both youth and their parents. In last case, emergency scenarios, TOY also provides limited temporary, overnight housing for youth in crisis. — Stay tuned to a future issue of qnotes for more on LGBT homelessness in Charlotte and across the Carolinas. This article appears in the March 20-April 2 print edition of Q-Notes

Meet Vic Hunt ... The Boy With A Cunt

So, let me get this straight… does Vic have a penis, a vagina, or both? Vic relates on his website that he has a vagina, which he prefers to call it his “cunt.” Vic goes on to say:
"I don’t exactly have a penis, but I have a large clit that I often call my “cock.”  I also have some very realistic contraptions that I can strap on for fun times.    It is also worth noting that even though I have female reproductive organs, they are mostly switched off because of the testosterone I take (ie, I don’t menstruate).  My testosterone levels are the same as you’d expect for any other man".
He is “pansexual,” which is a recent term meaning that you can be attracted to ALL (“pan-”) genders, instead of just TWO (“bi-”) genders. Vic is a graduate of the University of North Texas, where he participated in its undergraduate minor in the Study of Sexualities (now LGBT Studies). He plans to attend graduate school in the social sciences and help engineer future research on sexuality to further contribute to this enormous but under-researched subject area. He began teaching about sexuality in 2007, expanding what had always been educational conversations with friends into classes for special interest groups. Since then he has served as a guest speaker, panelist, and discussion leader for a variety of clubs, organizations, and colleges. Some of Vic's classes that he offers: Pup 101: Intro to Puppy Play – who? what? why? how? when? and with what? • Auto-Masochism: Recreational Self-Induced Pain – Inducing pain on oneself and indulging your own masochist – what are the problems and pleasures? • The Poor Man’s Guide to BDSM - various techniques of doing BDSM without toys and ways to make or find toys on the cheap. • Fucked-up Fantasizing – a discussion-heavy class about using fantasy to reach out and touch “the beast” and then come back to real life. • LeatherKids – What is this trend in under-35 kinky groups? This is a discussion on the benefits and problems of these groups led by someone who has closely watched and participated in the development of two of these groups in Dallas.

What's The Deal With The FreeCreditReport.com Band and the Hot Boy Lead Singer?

Q. Are the guys in the freecreditreport.com ads a real band? A. No, and the Web site doesn't really offer free credit reports either. To get a credit report from the Web site that the ads tout, you sign up for a trial membership in Experian's Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring service. Unless the membership is canceled during the seven-day trial period, you will be billed $14.95 a month for the service. The official site where you can request the free annual credit reports to which you are entitled by federal law is www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Or you can call toll-free 877-322-8228 or mail a written request to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Back to the band: It is certainly popular, with its own Web site, YouTube channel, Facebook fan page, and so on. But it is fictional. The main singer is played by Eric Violette, Canadian-Frenchie actor and musician. Last year, he responded to a question from The Washington Post about the ads' popularity by saying: "The songs are very catchy three-chord pop songs. I think it's also because of my curly hair." Violette told the Post he is working on writing some of his own songs and forming a band called God Against God. But the songs in the ads are written by Dave Mulhefeld of the Martin Agency, the company also responsible for the Geico gecko. It's not a real talking lizard, either, sadly. Internet gossip suggests that he doesn’t actually speak English well, and he doesn’t know how to play the guitar. Those are lies! According to his Web site, he does speak English and is an actor/musician who plays the piano and guitar. He’s also single, and possibly has good credit. Boys, make a single file line and no pushing. It just so happens he may have a "lil sugar in in his tank". He's entirely French, but even if you don't speak the language, there's enough on his website there to keep any gay boy fan happy -- including a video of him performing an amazing (and very very sexy!) French blues song called "Voracite Feminine (Feminine Voracity)" which he himself wrote. A very close and trusted source of ours who is a Canadian gay porn personality has told us that Eric can often be found hanging out in the more popular gay bars there in Canada.

Here Is What You Need To Know To Get Married in Washington D.C. (11 Easy Steps):

Effective March 3, 2010, same-sex couples may apply for marriage licenses in the District of Columbia. Are you and your partner ready to get married? If so, here's what you need to know before getting married in Washington D.C.:
Here's How:
  1. Age Requirement The minimum age for marriage in the District of Columbia is 18 years or 16 years with the consent of a parent or guardian. Applicants should bring driver's licenses, birth certificates, passports, or similar official document to show proof of age.
  2. Cost The Marriage License Application fee is $35.00. However, the fee is waived if a Domestic Partnership Certificate is presented at the time of application. The marriage certificate fee is $10.00. The Marriage Bureau only accepts cash or money orders (made out to Clerk, D.C. Superior Court).
  3. Previous Marriages Divorce happens. So does finding love again. If either of you have been previously married, be prepared to show your divorce papers. You'll need to provide the city, state, country of each previous marriage and the ending status, such as, by divorce or death. Home and work telephone numbers for both you and your ex(s) are also requested.
  4. Waiting Period Three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued.
  5. Blood And Other Tests As of September 11, 2008, a blood test is no longer a requirement to obtain a marriage license in the District of Columbia.
  6. Marriage License The Marriage License Application must include social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth for both parties as well as previous marriage information (see above). Also, in order to pick up your license, you must show your receipt for payment. Unfortunately licenses in the District are not issued by mail, so you have to pick it up in person.
  7. Wedding Officiator Even after you apply, your marriage isn't valid unless an ordained and licensed clergymen or justices of the peace officiates over your ceremony. Your "endorser" must be from the same religious society and registered with the Marriage Bureau Section, Family Court.
  8. Ceremony You can request a Civil Wedding performed by a court official in a room that fits up to 15 people. All free of charge. Request it at the time of registration, specifying the date and time you would like to be married and at least 10 days from the date of application. A clerk will call you to confirm a date.
  9. Copies of Certificate You can request a copy of your marriage certificate on the same day as the ceremony for $10 (cash or money order) or by mail at: Moultrie Courthouse 500 Indiana Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20001 Higher fees may apply for triple seal certificates used for adoption and foreign jurisdictions.
  10. Planning Plan your ceremony month-by-month with this same-sex wedding planner. On a budget? Learn how you and your fiance can save a few dollars and still have a beautiful ceremony.
  11. Ring Selection Kathy Belge over at About: Lesbian Life steps you through the process of buying a wedding ring, including deciding on a budget, style and jewelry store.

From Trials to Controversies, Brent Corrigan!

From trials to controversies, Brent Corrigan has gained as much notoriety off-screen as he has with his films. But the young star takes it all in his stride. He spoke with SX ahead of his Sydney appearance. Interview by Reg Domingo for SX Magazine Very few people in the adult entertainment industry have garnered as much attention and notoriety as Brent Corrigan (real name Sean Lockhart) has, whose journey to stardom and fame has been paved with media storms and controversies. From bestselling adult films and numerous accolades, to murder trials and uproar over his age, for the young actor, it’s been one eventful ride. These days, Corrigan, 23, is running his own production company while making inroads in mainstream film and writing, with several projects in the pipeline. But before then, he’s coming to Sydney in February to Sydney in February to appear at the Same Same Mardi Bar and Mardi Gras’ Queer Thinking. Ahead of his appearance, SX caught up with the Corrigan who spoke about his past, present and future. Without a doubt, your name is one of the most popular in the business. What is the story behind the origin of the name, ‘Brent Corrigan’? The name worked out extremely well for me, just by chance. My producer at the time pulled out a Playguy magazine with [porn star] Brent Everett on the cover and asked me what I thought about the name ‘Brent’. I said it was fine and agreed to it. Before the end of the weekend of that very first shoot, I pulled out a phone book to peruse some last name prospects. I wanted something that was consistent with my heritage, being a Scots-Irish boy. Corrigan is an Irish name, and Brent is a Scottish name. Though, I am told Brent is an uncommon Scottish alias. Tell us about the difference between Brent Corrigan and Sean Lockhart. Is there a bit of Brent in Sean, and a bit of Sean in Brent? The biggest difference between Brent Corrigan and the real me is the way I respond to people publicly. Sean Lockhart enjoys his anonymity and will even deny that he is Brent Corrigan when he's recognized walking down the street or working out in the gym. Brent Corrigan will talk to anyone and everyone and respond to almost any social stimuli. Much of who Brent Corrigan is, without a doubt, inside Sean Lockhart. The difference is, Brent Corrigan lets it all hang out with pride. Sean Lockhart is more reserved; more observant. Sean Lockhart was, and will always be, the actor and the artist. Brent Corrigan is the entertainer. There was some controversy regarding your disclosure of your age a few years ago. What can you remember about that experience, and the ensuing frenzy? What I remember most is feeling like I was being tugged several different directions. What many people chose to ignore was the fact that the producer knew all along how old I was. My then-lover and soon to be business partner advised me to come out with the truth upon heading into a new business venture. The underage work was wrong altogether and I was not of legal age or proper mind to make such a decision to be a part of the adult industry. Ultimately, the right thing to do was have it pulled. Today, I am deeply apologetic about the decision I made as a 17 year old boy - the decision to adult work before my time. It put an industry in flux and sent a very dangerous message to many young people at the time. With such a strong connection to the name ‘Brent Corrigan’, do you think there will ever be a day when you will no longer use it? Oh certainly!  I have no intentions of staying involved in the adult industry forever, or even much longer than I am now. My sincerest hope is that I can move forward enough with my mainstream work at a steady rate of evolution. Ideally, there will come a day in my career as an actor that directors and producers are giving me mainstream roles purely on the merit of my abilities or versatility as a real actor. But for now, I am primarily getting roles because I am Brent Corrigan. Generally, openly-gay actors can encounter hurdles when it comes to casting. It must be particularly challenging for gay porn actors. Do you think your past will affect your mainstream career, and if so, how do you feel about that? Yes, very true. Many gay actors have avoided the truth or topic of their sexuality altogether in an effort to remain relevant in the Hollywood. I have absolutely no designs on becoming the next big anything. I just want to act. I love queer films and I am perfectly at home playing a homo!  I was very well aware that the second I stepped foot on an adult set all of those open doors to Hollywood, those possibilities, would be lost. As I developed myself as an adult star, all the while revealing and sharing with the world that there was so much more to me than the physical, roles in mainstream films presented themselves to me. I accept Brent Corrigan will follow Sean Lockhart where ever he goes; that is a conscious concession I made when I chose to become who I am today. Owning it has done far more for me than trying to live it down.  Will I become the next big Disney Star? No, absolutely not. Do I care to? Double no. I like having an edge. I truly do believe it's one of the things I have to offer that most actors don't. You have a very intimate blog and website. Tell us your relationship with the art of writing? I've maintained a firm grasp of my voice and ability by writing almost regularly on a blog since I was 19. I know I have a lot to learn and I very much invite new challenges and opportunities to absorb more. Do I want to be a writer by profession? Not necessarily, but I do want to publish a few books. Ultimately, I want to take my affinity for the written word and apply it to writing screenplays. You’re currently writing a book. Tell us about that. I am working on a book chronicling, or detailing rather, much of my experiences since moving to San Diego at 16 years old. It will outline my life as an adult model my junior year in high school, starting my first adult company at 19, a civil suit and the onslaught of a producer hell-bent on leveling not only my reputation but my emotional foundation.  Of course, people tend to be most curious about things like the murder investigation I was a star witness in as well as how I managed to segue into mainstream oriented films. Needless to say, I have my hands full with it. Do you have any regrets? Yes, the one true regret I have is the bareback work I filmed when I was 17 and 18. Part of me regrets trusting some of my former business partners, but at the end of the day it's all life experience.  A few hard knocks are just inherently a part of the process when you go into business with people at 18 and 19 without proper education or experience. What’s next for Sean Lockhart/Brent Corrigan? I release my book late Spring 2010. I'm looking at doing a handful of plays and independent mainstream projects. A film I’m starring in, Judas Kiss, is out in August.  Until then, I'm doing a little bit of travelling and spending time with my loved ones.  Life is too short not to diversify a little! Is this your first time to Australia/Mardi Gras? What are you most excited about seeing/doing? Primarily, I plan to go with the flow. I want to get a feel for your architecture, the food and your parks and beaches. I love the outdoors and I'm going to figure out a way to get to Obelisk or Lady Jane Beach while I am there in Sydney. We have a nude beach here in San Diego but most of the cute, young boys refuse to take their shorts off.  I'm also going to Melbourne and would love to see the Yarra Valley – but who knows if I will have time to get out there. It would be a dream come true to go horseback riding out there. Tell us about Queer Thinking. Are you excited about taking part at the Mardi Gras event? I am very much excited to be speaking with the people of Sydney and Australia. I have never been to your fine country; let alone below the equator. I hope to learn something hands-on about your culture. I am extremely fascinated with how our community varies in relation to yours. Hopefully, in the process I can strike down some stereotypes and preconceived notions about actors or adult performers! You’re also appearing at the Same Same Mardi Bar. Tell us about that. I’m coming down under as a guest of the Cool Kids Club at Same Same Mardi Bar this year and just can’t wait. From what I hear, it was a lot of fun last year, and I’m really excited about being a part of it this year. For more information on Brent Corrigan, go to thenewbrentcorrigan.com. Brent Corrigan will be appearing exclusively at Mardi Bar on Wednesday, February 24, and Thursday, February 25. An initiative between SameSame.com.au and Cool Kids Club, Mardi Bar is open from February 26-March 6 at Nevermind (163 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst). Brent will also be appearing at an in-conversation session at Mardi Gras’ Queer Thinking on Friday, February 26 at the Seymour Centre (cnr City Road and Cleveland Street, Chippendale). There is a New King (Queen?) on Fire Island - He is Only 23 And He Is RICH RICH RICH!

Gossip is already flying about Fire Island, the getaway for New York's A-list gays. Long-time monopolizer Eric von Kuersteiner — who owns practically everything in the community - is selling all his properties to a mysterious 23/24-year-old gay kid. Public records lists his age as 26, but sometimes these things are wrong. His name is Seth Jordan Weissman NEXT Magazine broke the story first, that Von Kuersteiner and his business partner Tony Roncalliwhose empire includes two bars, a restaurant, a dance club, a small gym, a grocery store, a clothing store, a construction business, a freight business, the community's dock, and the only hotel in town—has sold most of their properties to Seth Weissman, a young kid who no one knows anything about other than that he is from a rich family and is connected to the Hamptons and that he is an analyst at hedge fund Perry Capital who lives in Gramercy Park. The deal—which is set to close next week—is reportedly $18 million for everything but the dock and freight companies. GAWKER reports...Von Kuersteiner and Roncalli rescued the small resort five years ago since it had fallen into disrepair, but their business practices—especially von Kuersteiner's, always the more public of the two—were often called into question. Since the town is so small and they were one of only three business owners, they often exercised their monopoly. They opened a grocery store to compete with the only other place to buy food—a small, family-owned store that had been there for decades. They had an acrimonious relationship with many of the local home owners and other business because they controlled the dock which means they controlled access to the island. Anything they asked for—or more often, demanded—they got. Von Kuersteiner and Co especially had hard feelings for the neighboring gay community, Cherry Grove, and used their dock access to stop boats from taking visitors from one village to the next, and for anyone who has drunkenly stumbled through the Meat Rack—the dense forest between the two towns—at 3am, not having a boat to bring you to and fro is more than enough to keep you partying closer to your summer share and putting cash into Von Kuersteiner and Roncalli's pockets. They also reportedly demanded that the army of young pretty boys they hired to staff all their properties were forbidden from hanging out in the Grove, even on their nights off. Rumors are flying left and right he's changing everything, he's not changing a thing, this is great, this is horrible, blah, blah, blah, talk amongst yourselves. The summer season is still a few months  away!
