Police Chief Accused of Having Sex: 17 y/o Boy at Police HQ

hopedale_ohioA teen who alleges he was sexually abused by a former police chief was taking part in a department-sponsored youth program at the time of the acts. Ronald Bone, 51, was arrested Thursday, accused of sexual battery against a 17-year-old boy, Harrison County, Ohio Sheriff Joe Myers said Friday. Myers said the teen came forward Tuesday with the allegations against the former police chief. Myers said Bone was on duty and in uniform at the time of the alleged abuse that occurred in the Hopedale, Ohio Police Department. He said the crimes took place from October 2008 until March 2009. The teen was taking part in the "explorer program" during which youths ride along with officers. In addition to serving in Hopedale, Bone also was a Cadiz, Ohio police officer and a Harrison County sheriff's deputy. Myers said Bone faced allegations of sexual misconduct about eight years when he was an officer in Cadiz. He said Bone was never charged because the woman's claims were deemed unfounded. Myers has known Bone for years. Still, he said he has been a law enforcement officer too long to be surprised by anything he is called on to investigate. "Anything can happen," Myers said. "Nothing surprises me. It's a sad situation that it's happening to a law-enforcement officer, but they are held to a higher standard, and that's why we take it so seriously." The case is being investigated by Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. That agency is handling the case to avoid a conflict of interest. Bone resigned as Hopedale's police chief on Aug. 31. He served in that capacity for five years. It is not yet known if his resignation is connected to the allegation against him. Bone could spend 10 years in jail if convicted. Myers said any additional victims or anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Harrison County Sheriff's Department at 740-942-2197 WTOV Channel 9 Reporting
