Florida Police Works Gay.com Yielding 16 yr Prison Term For Public Figure Who Drove For Sex With Minor Boy

icac-patchA former public works director for Robertsdale, Alabama. was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison Friday after being found guilty of traveling to Pensacola, Florida to have sex with a minor. In March, David Allen Girard, 53, was arrested when he drove to Pensacola to meet and engage in sexual activity with who he thought was a 14-year-old boy. The boy was actually a member of the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, who was posing as a child on the Web site GAY.COM.

According to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release, Girard contacted the "14-year-old boy," actually an undercover officer, through the site, discussed engaging in sexual activity with him, and arranged a meeting in Pensacola. When Girard arrived at the meeting place, he was taken in to custody by law enforcement.   Girard had condoms and personal lubrication in his possession when he was arrested, the release said. Girard was already a registered sex offender, due to a 2001 conviction in Alabama for possessing child pornography. U.S. District Court Judge Casey Rodgers sentenced Girard on Friday to 195 months in prison followed by a lifetime term of supervised release for the latest conviction.

Herman Thomas had an enviable political record as a black Democrat elected and re-elected in a county overwhelmingly white and increasingly Republican. The respected circuit judge once was the Democratic Party's choice to be the first black federal judge in south Alabama. Then his career collapsed under allegations that he brought inmates to his office and spanked them with a paddle. Later, an indictment accused him of sexually abusing male inmates in exchange for leniency. The trial on charges of sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse, extortion, assault and ethics violations is set to start Monday. The case has shocked his friends and former colleagues. "I've always had the highest regard for him. The allegations were a complete surprise to me and everyone else who knew him," said Bob Edington, a prominent Mobile attorney and former Democratic state senator. Thomas, who was known for wearing distinctive bow ties, stepped down from the bench in 2007 after the allegations of paddling surfaced and just ahead of a judicial ethics trial that could have forced him out of office. He was indicted on the more-serious charges this past spring by a Mobile County grand jury. If convicted of the most serious charges — sodomy and kidnapping — he faces from 20 years to life in prison. The oldest incident in the charges dates to 1999, his first year as a circuit judge. The first public claim against Thomas surfaced in lawsuits filed by an inmate in 2001 in Mobile circuit court and in federal court that claimed the judge offered to help him with his case in return for sex. Both lawsuits were dismissed, and Thomas' reputation remained unblemished. Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said authorities began looking at Thomas after he changed a jail sentence in 2006 for his cousin, former Mobile County school commissioner David Thomas, even though the case was being handled by another judge. Scott Abbott, who goes by the stage name Joe has been accused in a March 7, 2009 quadruple murder case near Birmingham, Alabama. He is claiming innocence in the deaths of William Chad Gilbert, 31; Jeri Lynn Cole, 27; Nika Sandlin, 24; and Joshua Gilleo, 26. Abbott faces one count of capital murder for killing more than one person and another four counts for killing each of the four victims after breaking into the home. Hueytown, Alabama police believe that his relationship with a female gone bad drove Abbott to break into a house and stab to death the four people inside. One of the victims, authorities claimed, was Abbott's ex-girlfriend. Authorities said Abbott had lived at the house with Gilbert, Sandlin and Cole until two weeks before the murders. When police arrived at the house they found all four victims with multiple stab wounds. Police arrested Abbott on the day of the murders in Gadsden, Alabama where he showed up at a hospital with stab or slash wounds to his left arm and hand, an arrest affidavit discloses.

The Cullman Times quotes Jerry Lawson, pastor of Daystar Church, as saying a big reaction is exactly what he is looking for. "Absolutely, we wanted to shock people,” Lawson tells the newspaper. "Talking about the issue proactively is the key.” The paper says Lawson's campaign includes a series of videos on the church's website, including a humorous discussion about sex with an actor portraying the devil. pastorThe Associated Press quotes local evangelist Roland Belew, a former trucker who now preaches at a truck stop, as saying the whole idea goes against the teaching of New Testament apostles. "Paul said preach the Gospel," the AP quotes Belew as saying. "Talking about sex ain't gonna get nobody to heaven." But Lawson says the church needs to be out front on the topic in a culture awash in sex. "I was in the back of the bar, Catch 22, and we were picking music by the jukebox and the female owner of the bar just kicked out my friends for dancing 'too gay,' said "Joseph." The bar owner then asked him if he was gay, to which he answered, yes. "She proceeded to tell me that she was the owner of the bar and that if I'm to continue coming to her bar, that it's not OK to be open because it's not a gay bar and it never will be. And then she added that gay people disgust her," "Joseph" told us. After that, "Joseph" says he gathered his friends and left, in all, about 20 people, and he says he has no plans to return. The staff of Catch 22 are uncertain exactly what "Joseph" is talking about. The staff member declined to comment on camera, but says that no one was asked to leave on the night in question, for being "too gay" or for any other reason and that the incident never took place. But, "Joseph" maintains that he was discriminated against for being gay. He says, "Hopefully, this will be an eye-opener for people, because if homosexuality was a race, this would be a legal case. ...now, it's nothing... nothing." According to Christine Sun, with the American Civil Liberties Union, there's no legal recourse in a situation like this. "Unfortunately, Alabama does not have public accommodations laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. So, it's unfortunate that he does not have recourse in terms of the legal system," said Sun. "Joseph" hopes by talking to others about what happened to him, it will shed light on something he hopes will change. "It's anger, it's frustration, it's sadness, but you know, that's why we work to change things," said "Joseph." The Catch 22 staff member says "Joseph" and his friends are welcome to return at any time, an invite "Joseph" plans to decline.
