Montreal Police Say Gay Nightclub Fire Was Arson

firemonetralMontreal, Canada authorities say a fire at a popular nightclub in the city's Gay Village was deliberately set. Pointing to accelerants found in the debris, police confirmed that the Tuesday morning fire at Stereo on Ste-Catherine Street was deliberately started. It's the second time in 14 months that the club has been targeted by arson. A major fire at the after-hours establishment in July 2008 gutted the building, forcing the owners to close for a year for major repairs. The club was set to re-open this weekend with a splashy five-day party starting Thursday night, but owners said that will probably be delayed. Co-owner Tommy Piscardeli said he's not sure who is behind the arson, but he is frustrated his business was targeted again. "I really don't know what it is," he told CBC News. "It could be anything, but I just want it to stop. We want to give people some music, we want to give people a good place to be, and we're having a really hard time doing it." Hundreds of people have already bought tickets for the re-opening party, including Hector Breault, who is disappointed the event probably will be delayed. A security guard discovered the fire early Tuesday morning, police said. Arson investigators are still at the three-floor building collecting evidence.

Arson of Pink Triangle

pinktrianglegayflagCROPPEDArson investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that damaged the Pink Triangle on San Francisco's Twin Peaks Sunday morning just hours before the city's annual Pride Parade was set to kick off.
"Right now investigators are looking at all possible sources of ignition," San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.
The triangle, which overlooks the city atop a large hill at San Francisco's Twin Peaks, is a fabric installation that is set up each year during Pride Week as a symbol of gay liberation and human rights. The symbol was used by the Nazi government during World War II to identify and stigmatize gays. It has since come to stand as a commemoration of those who were persecuted in Germany and a symbol of gay liberation. More information can be found at their website.

The blaze was reported at about 5 a.m. near Christmas Tree Point Road and was extinguished about 30 minutes later. A 25-by-30 foot area was damaged, Talmadge said.
"This is just a really horrible thing to have happen. It's very sad on gay pride day that some idiot would sabotage our symbol of overcoming oppression," said Jeanine Reisbig, who was at the site surveying the damage Sunday morning.
