James Franco Does Queer Cinema 'Feast of Stephen'

James Franco is a perfect ten. He's incredibly kind on the retina, he can act, and now, he can direct too. After studying at New York University's Film School, his directorial debut, The Feast of Stephen has just won him a Teddy at the Berlin Film Festival for excellence in queer cinema. Although his short film contains slow motion collisions of equal parts penis and basketball, (balls everywhere really), this does not, in any way, mean that Franco himself is of the homosexual demographic. I hope. Based on Anthony Hecht's achingly homoerotic poem by the same name, which includes lines like: "The coltish horseplay of the locker room,/ Moist with the steam of the tiled shower stalls...", the film tracks a young man's daydream from a game on a New York basketball court, to a very sexual, gay, rite- of- passage beating in Central Park. It's a collision of violence and ecstasy, with an intimacy that alternates between kick, punch and dry-hump, all 'mounting' to the film's grand finale where the protagonist has feces smeared across his face. It's demeaning and has a gang-rape feel to it, but the grin he shares with the audience at the end, suggests that this disambiguation is merely part of growing up. I gotta say, not since Leo Dicaprio did Basketball Diaries in 1995, has the sport looked so interesting. There's dribbling and sweating, and that's just from the audience. Even if silent, gay, naked basketball films aren't your thang, anything by James Franco is worth the watch.

David Taylor, Austin Wilde Are Named Raging Stallion's Man of Year Award

David Taylor and Austin Wilde were named Raging Stallion Studios 2010 Men of the Year over the weekend. The announcement, made Saturday night during the annual Raging Stallion Folsom Street Fair party, represents the first time two Raging Stallion performers have shared the award.

“Both of these men are superstars, and both represent what Raging Stallion is all about: hot, masculine men who enjoy life to the fullest,” studio President Chris Ward said. “David and Austin are top talents, and we at Raging Stallion are proud to have them in our stable of stars.”

The decision this year was a particularly challenging one, he added.

“We have so many talented performers working for us,” Ward said. “Every year it gets harder and harder to make this selection. I almost decided to drop the award, because quite frankly, eight or 10 of our guys could have easily been named Man of the Year.”

Wilde and Taylor were thrilled with the honor.

“I am so honored and surprised to be named Man of the Year in my first break-out year in this business,” said Wilde, who recently wrapped a performance in the sequel to Arabesque, due out later this year. “Raging Stallion has become my home in the short time I have been here, and Chris, Kent [Taylor] and their team have made me feel like family. I am looking forward to exploring all the sides of me that I am sure they will bring out, and to all the exciting things in the year ahead.”

Taylor added, “What an honor it is to be named Man of the Year along with Austin Wilde. It has been such an amazing experience to work with Raging Stallion and all the wonderful and talented people they have. I am Honored to be in the stable with Raging Stallion.”

The title of Raging Stallion Studios Man of the Year previously has been held by Steve Cruz, Jake Deckard, Michael Brandon, Roman Ragazzi, Shane Rollins, Ricky Sinz and Tom Vacarro. Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Barack Obama on Thursday named gay civil rights pioneer Harvey Milk and tennis great (and open lesbian) Billie Jean King as two of 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

This year’s awardees were chosen for their work as agents of change. Among their many accomplishments in fields ranging from sports and art to science and medicine to politics and public policy, these men and women have changed the world for the better. They have blazed trails and broken down barriers. They have discovered new theories, launched new initiatives, and opened minds to new possibilities.

President Obama said, “These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. Their tremendous accomplishments span fields from science to sports, from fine arts to foreign affairs. Yet they share one overarching trait: Each has been an agent of change. Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way. Their relentless devotion to breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens sets a standard to which we all should strive. It is my great honor to award them the Medal of Freedom.”

President Obama will present the awards at a ceremony on Wednesday, August 12, 2009.

Other awardees include Nancy Goodman Brinker, the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s leading breast cancer awareness organization; Stephen Hawking, the internationally-recognized theoretical physicist; Sen. Edward Kennedy; Desmund Tutu; Chita Rivera; Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland; and Sidney Poitier.

Billie Jean King was an acclaimed professional tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s, and has helped champion gender equality issues not only in sports, but in all areas of public life. King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, then the most viewed tennis match in history. King became one of the first openly lesbian major sports figures in America when she came out in 1981. Following her professional tennis career, King became the first woman commissioner in professional sports when she co-founded and led the World Team Tennis (WTT) League. 2009 Grabby Awards

I have no idea where to begin. So lets start in 1998 when An American in Prague by BelAmi Video was awarded The Best Selling Video at the 1998 Gayvn Awards. Jack Wrangler, R.I.P.

Actor, Writer, Producer and former adult film star Jack Wrangler, died Tuesday at age 62. Wrangler had been struggling with complications from lung disease.

9.5 Reasons I Like Luke Hass
