52nd Annual Grammy Nominees Are Announced!

beyonce_grammysThe Grammys went conservative this year, showering nominations on the year's biggest hits. R&B/pop diva Beyoncé leads the field, pulling down 10 Grammy bids and topping bestselling teen country-pop star Taylor Swift's eight nods. Pop/hip-hop unit The Black Eyed Peas, R&B vocalist Maxwell and rapper Kanye West all hauled in six nominations for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, announced by the Recording Academy Wednesday night. A handful of nominees were revealed during a special show broadcast on CBS from L.A.'s Club Nokia. There were precious few surprises in the noms, and few selections will please critics who continue to condemn the academy's concept of what constitutes music of quality as narrow and retrograde. Facing off for album of the year honors are Beyoncé's "I Am…Sasha Fierce," Swift's "Fearless," Gaga's "The Fame," the Black Eyed Peas' "E.N.D." and the category's longshot, the Dave Matthews Band's "Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King." Competing for record of the year are Beyoncé's "Halo," the Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody," Gaga's "Poker Face" and Swift's "You Belong to Me." Nominees for song of the year - a writer's award - are Beyonce's "Single Ladies" (written by Thaddis Harrell, Terius Nash, Beyoncé Knowles and Christopher Stewart), Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (by Lady Gaga and RedOne), Maxwell's "Pretty Wings" (by Musze and Hod David), Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" (by band members Caleb, Nathan, Jared and Matthew Followill) and Taylor Swift's "You Belong to Me" (by Swift and Liz Rose). In the running for best new artist are Atlanta-bred country act the Zac Brown Band, Brooklyn electro-pop twosome MGMT, pop/R&B songwriter-turned-soloist Keri Hilson, L.A. rock unit Silversun Pickups and the English rock twosome the Ting Tings. gaga_fameFormer Destiny's Child leading lady Beyonce continues to percolate as a solo artist. Her "Sasha Fierce" has sold 2.5 million copies to date. She has won seven Grammys in her own name, but has never collected one outside the R&B or rap categories, despite two record of the year nods. This year she finds herself nominated in three of the big four slots, but she will have to go head-to-head with Swift, the bestselling performer of 2009. Swift's presence in the top categories was assured by her astounding commercial track record over the last year. Her late-2008 release "Fearless" has moved more than 4.5 million units to date. She has garnered awards in every imaginable corner of the industry: the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Assn., the American Music Awards, and (most memorably) the MTV Video Music Awards, where her acceptance speech was interrupted by notoriously unpredictable rapper Kanye West. She's a prime candidate for the kind of multi-Grammy coronation accorded Alicia Keys (2002), Norah Jones (2003) and Amy Winehouse (2008). And, though her self-titled 2007 debut has also sold in excess of 4.4 million, she's been a Grammy wallflower so far - nominated as best new artist two years ago, she lost to Winehouse. Though Lady Gaga collected a Grammy nomination last year, thereby disqualifying her for the best new artist category this year, the dance-pop vocalist is repped in the three other top categories. She made her breakthrough in 2009, as her album "Fame" sold more than 1.7 million copies. She currently holds two slots in the top 10 of the U.S. album chart. Black Eyed Peas are unlikely to go home empty-handed, for the ubiquitous hip-hop/pop group has dominated the charts for much of the year with "E.N.D" and the singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling," which held the top two singles slots simultaneously this summer. The act has picked up a trio of Grammys in both rap and pop categories, for their singles "Let's Get It Started" (2005), "Don't Phunk With My Heart" (2006) and "My Humps" (2007). dmb_grammysThe brotherly Nashville rockers Kings of Leon, who garnered a total of four nods, busted into two of the four major categories on the strength of their long-running hit "Only By the Night," which housed the twice-nominated "Use Somebody." Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" picked up, after a long lay-off, where the vocalist left off with his last album, his No. 1 entry "Now." The Brooklyn neo-soul singer's mid-summer chart-topper, his first release since that 2001 opus, was a lustrous affair that has sold 885,000 units to date. The vocalist attempted to curry some good will among Grammy voters by headlining a concert benefiting the struggling Grammy Museum at L.A.'s Club Nokia after the nominations show there on Wednesday night. In spite of himself, hot-headed rapper West is back in the Grammy game this year. But he will likely take little pleasure in his six nods, since his offbeat album "808s and Heartbreak" was snubbed in the album, record and song of the year categories. West has taken home a dozen Grammy trophies since 2005, but he has consistently fallen short in the major categories, including album of the year (with three previous nominations) - no doubt to some degree because of his tendency to shoot from the lip. Some sentimental choices and Grammy favorites are conspicuously absent from the four main categories. Whitney Houston's much-trumpeted comeback album "I Look to You" was released by Arista Records on Aug. 31 to make the pushed-back deadline for nomination eligibility, but found no favor. Neither did U2's "No Line On the Horizon"; despite 22 Grammys to their credit, the Irish band could muster support in the rock categories alone. On the film and TV front, sets competing for best compilation soundtrack album include "Cadillac Records" (a recent Beyoncé film vehicle), "Inglourious Basterds," "Slumdog Millionaire," "True Blood" and "Twilight." Up for best score soundtrack album are "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (composed by Alexander Desplat), "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" (Nicholas Hooper), "Milk" (Danny Elfman), "Star Trek" (Michael Giacchino) and "Up" (Giacchino). Tagged for best song written for a motion picture, TV or other visual media are "The Climb" (from "Hannah Montana: The Movie"), "Decode" (from "Twilight"), "Jai Ho" (from "Slumdog Millionaire"), "Once in a Lifetime" (from "Cadillac Records") and Bruce Springsteen's title song for "The Wrestler." Legit tuners nominated for best musical show album are "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Hair," "9 to 5 The Musical," "Shrek the Musical" and "West Side Story." Winners in 109 Grammy categories, voted on by members of the Recording Academy, will be announced Jan. 31. CBS will telecast the ceremony from L.A.'s Staples Center. SONG OF THE YEAR Beyonce - "Single Ladies" Lady Gaga - "Poker Face" Maxwell - "Pretty Wings" Kings of Leon - "Use Somebody" Taylor Swift - "You Belong With Me." ALBUM OF THE YEAR Beyonce - "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." Lady Gaga - "The Fame" Taylor Swift - "Fearless" Dave Matthews Band - "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King." Stephen Gately (BoysZone) Made A Gay Icon

Andrew Cowles fights back tears at Stonewall Awards show

Andrew Cowles fights back tears at Stonewall Awards show

Gay rights group Stonewall has honoured Boyzone at its annual awards ceremony. The band won the 'Entertainers Of The Year' prize at the event on Thursday in honour of their support of gay bandmate Stephen Gately.
The ceremony also included a tribute to Gately, who died last month. His widower Andrew Cowles praised Stonewall when he accepted Boyzone's award. "A few years ago Boyzone made pop history by featuring a gay kiss in one of their videos ('Better')," he said. "That was not a marketing stunt, it was simply a mark of respect for Stephen and his sexuality." Cowles further criticised Daily Mail journalist Jan Moir, who won the ceremony's 'Bigot Of The Year' award after her controversial article about Gately's death. "I would like to take this opportunity to say how insensitive some of the press have been in their reporting of Stephen's death," Cowles added. "In particular I would like to thank everybody who contacted the Press Complaints Commission about the Jan Moir Daily Mail article."

2009 Grabby Awards

In 1992, the first Grabby Erotic Gay Video Awards were published in Gay Chicago Magazine. Seven years later, the first live Grabby Awards Show was held at a Bathhouse. As the Grabby Awards grew, it moved to larger venues and now includes events that span Memorial Day weekend. Now it draws national attention, dozens of porn stars and spans 4 days of events. The 2009 Erotic Video Awards this year was dominated by Raging Stallions, much like the Gayvn Awards were just this past March. The event went off without a hitch. Here is a visual list of the winners and a couple of videos. Enjoy and feel free to click on any image for further details and background.

Really A Shameless Party!

brentmain

While I was away for Spring Break I missed all the juicy shit about this year's GayVN Awards out in San Francisco. Thanks to the sweet boys at The Sword I understand everyone got a live broadcast to watch the whole show streamed live and judging from the over 200 plus comments on the GayVN Awards Report article you guys really put your voices to work. I think Just One Hot Minute scored the most comments for any blog post about the Awards! Kudos to The Sword for the feed and a job well done getting the stream live to all the viewers world-wide who stayed out of the way of this year's most talked about neck slashing event. Check out The Sword for a great collection of the after party photos.

awards

You could say that the drama started last year when porn producers Raging Stallion released the film that ended up sweeping the night's awards, their glossy controversial porn noir "To The Last Man" walked away with over a dozen awards. When "To The Last Man" was released, it was highly criticized for the graphic violence depicted in the cowboy drama, making it a veritable gay porn Deadwood. It's throat-slashings, hangings, and various murders mixed with sex got it called a "snuff film" while others praised it for high production values and attention to plot -- an unflinching portrayal of murderous characters, just like in Hollywood films -- but with sex. Check Out Queer Me Now for more about "To The Last Man."

Earlier that day, Michael Lucas had made it his mission to top Brent Corrigan and get Corrigan off the list of presenters. Despite the strange fact that Lucas had negotiated with Corrigan in 2006 to perform in one of his films and recently visited J1HM and took a good look at MJ Taylor's The Big Easy article and was so kind to drop his two cents in the comment board and didn't fuss about Brent Boy then. Although he did say, "see you guys in SF in a couple weeks." At around 4:00 PM Lucas Twittered, "I just had Brent Corrigan kicked out of the GayVN Awards tonight... that criminal brat has put too many in this industry at risk already." But Lucas was unsuccessful, and it was the beginning of a long, angry night.

 boyfriendhotter

The onstage explosion he made was just plain grandstanding in my opinion. Michael needs to get his prescription medication changed if he is going to drink all the booze and hang out with that crazy bunch of "pump-him-up queens" he works with. At the after party, stories conflict about the events as they unfolded, but there was some sort of confrontation between Lucas and Corrigan's boyfriend, prompting Lucas after the party to call the SFPD to Corrigan's hotel room not once, but twice. Corrigan's boyfriend ended up in the hallway in cuffs, but no arrest has been reported as of NOW.

hotandnot

mason-wyler-interview-theswordSister Roma dropped the question on Mason Wyler about all that crazy shit he told everyone online about getting raped by an army captain last year. And can you believe after 8 months he still thinks people fell for that bullshit story? Many bloggers accused Mason of fabricating the story for press. Mason may be as much of an attention whore as he is a cock whore, but the people at The Sword never "doubted his story." Click Here to watch the video where he speaks out against the haters.  You'd think that would be enough drama. Margaret Cho's song about Ricky Sinz's, award-winning penis (he won "Best Top.") was enough to make a billy-goat choke. She needs to go do that shit on Logo's lesbian hour time slot. I'll spare you the link to that video.

GayVN Awards Report

gavvnRaging Stallion sweeps up awards at the 2009 GayVN Awards. Brent Corrigan brought home 3 awards (Best Pro Am Title for Summit, Best Bottom and Just the Sex for Best Twink Video). Michael Lucas did the usual grand-standing act by coming on stage (not invited) and ranted about Brent Corrigan being nominated. He seems to feel that the age issue surrounding Brent some years ago is reason to ban him from getting an award. You can catch most of the details in the comment thread below. J1HM brought the live video feed into this post ( 3.5 hours long). You can see most of the details in the threads. Video re-play may not be available but we will provide you a link to view it on Monday night.

HERE IS MY THOUGHTS ON THE AWARDS SHOW TONIGHT
1.) The show's theme was stupid ( Football ) half time was cheerleaders dancing around. 2.) No Chi Chi Larue (she is out of the country or something although she dropped in via web cam) 3.) The Music sucked. The hosts were something you would find at a lesbian bar. Margaret Cho, Janice Dickerson ...  so stupid for an all male show.
MY OVER ALL RATING was it SUCKED. then again I wasn't there in person.
