Chi Chi Larue's 'Filthy/Gorgeous' Event A HUGE Success!

Published on The Cornell Daily Sun (http://www.cornellsun.com): On Saturday night, the Cornell gay community took over the Straight and hosted the fourth annual Filthy/Gorgeous Party, which aims to celebrate the LGBTQ community at Cornell. “I like to consider it the gay Slope Day,” said Ben Lebrun ’10, president of the Gay Straight Alliance. This year’s event drew more than 600 students, some dressed in drag, others coming with their same-sex partners. Some came wearing platform shoes and chains. The party also drew people from outside the gay community. Attendance is up from 400 last year, which did not surprise Lebrun. “I feel that an event that cost $27,000 and took 11 months to plan speaks for itself,” Lebrun said. Approximately $7,000 of this came from SAFC funding, according to Chris Basil ’10, vice president of finance for the Student Assembly. Proceeds from the event benefitted Sylvia’s Place, a shelter for those suffering from domestic violence, and the Metropolitan Community Church of New York Homeless Youth Services. The party was originally started back in 2006 and was the brainchild of John Connelly ’03. To make the event stand out, Connelly wanted to create a sex-positive environment. At this year’s party, a bin of condoms sat on the table for people to take as they paid the $3 entry fee. The resolution’s sponsors, At-Large Rep. Andrew Brokman ’11 and LGBTQ Rep. Matt Danzer ’11, both attended the event. Danzer said, “I think Haven itself — as well as the event Filthy/Gorgeous — highlights why Resolution 44 is so important. The LGBTQ community spans the spectrum of culture, community religion and Haven and its affiliated organizations try to encapsulate that by creating an event that welcomes everybody.” According to John Connelly, in light of the recent approval of the non-discrimination clause, the timing of Filthy/Gorgeous was a lucky coincidence. “This party wasn’t necessarily an intentional celebration of Resolution 44, but I’m sure it contributed to the happy vibes,” he said. Billy Hanson of Whore’s Mascara, who performs under the stage name Lonni Bahls, said that he had been looking into some of the controversy before coming up to Ithaca from New York City. “There really needs to be a Resolution 69,” Hanson said. “People should be afforded all rights no matter what.” Some students in the gay community, however, were not happy with the party. Nate Treffeisen ’12 said that he did not find the in-your-face nature of the party very receptive. He had been opposed to the party as soon as the posters went up, but still attended to see what it was all about. “I’m not here to be filthy, I’m not here to be gorgeous, I’m here to be gay,” he said. “I think in a way it reinforces [gay] stereotypes in the sense that the name Filthy/Gorgeous does not necessarily reflect the way every gay person … goes about their daily life.” Because of Haven’s prominence on campus, Treffeisen expressed concern over the fact that the prominent LGBTQ group on campus — the face of the gay community — opted to sponsor an event with a name so prone to reinforcing certain gay stereotypes. Treffeisen said, “[The event’s name] was definitely a controversial issue because it does definitely represent the entire gay community at Cornell and I think it’s personally offensive … to a lot of the gay community.” Having discussed the issue with other members of the Cornell gay community, Treffeisen observed, “Not a lot of people are speaking out … but there really is a lot of unrest. No one is particularly happy with the way the event represents them.” Danzer did not share Treffeisen’s concerns. “I think it’s important to remember that Filthy/Gorgeous isn’t the only even that the LGBTQ community puts on at Cornell,"” Danzer said. “It’s one of a number of events that are put on throughout the year. … If Filthy/Gorgeous were the only event they were putting on I could see where those comments were coming from … but given that it’s not I think it’s wrong to say that [the name of] the event is stereotyping.” Danzer did not see the event’s portrayal of the University’s gay community as problematic enough to interfere with the party-friendly atmosphere. “I was at the event and people were just focusing on having fun not on how it portrayed the community,” he said.

Poor Countries Fail Gay Men (to protect m4m sex from contracting HIV/AIDS)

On the eve of World AIDS Day (Tuesday, 1 December), a landmark paper documents the failure of low and middle income countries to protect men who have sex with men from contracting HIV/AIDS. The research, led by academics from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), was commissioned by UNAIDS and presents the largest set of data available on HIV prevention in men who have sex with men (MSM) in low  and middle income countries (LMIC). The research, which has just been published in a special issue of the Journal of AIDS, shows that on average fewer than a third of MSM in these countries have ever been tested for HIV (31 per cent), around a third have been reached by HIV prevention programs (33 per cent), fewer than half had correct HIV knowledge (44 per cent) and just over a half had used condoms the last time they had sex with a man (54 per cent). “Until now there has been no compilation of data describing levels of HIV testing, coverage of HIV prevention programs, HIV knowledge and condom use among MSM in low and middle income countries. Our work provides reliable global estimates,” says the lead author of the paper, Dr Philippe Adam, Senior Research Fellow at the National Centre in HIV Social Research (NCHSR). “These data indicate that in many poorer countries, HIV prevention responses in MSM need substantial improvement,” says Dr Adam. “These men still suffer from extreme discrimination,” says Professor John de Wit, the Director of NCHSR and one of the other authors of the paper. “In addition, some of these countries do not yet acknowledge that MSM exist in their countries and that they are at a substantially higher risk of being infected by HIV. This lack of recognition is also evident from the fact that only 45 per cent of low and middle countries reported on the HIV prevention needs and responses in MSM. “Effective HIV prevention responses to the epidemic among MSM are needed in all countries and they are needed now,” says Professor de Wit. “I hope that our paper will contribute to raising awareness of the problem within governments and will also give international donors the leverage to demand action.” Don Baxter, Executive Director of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations said: “Since the last international AIDS Conference in Mexico last year the impetus to improve the health and human rights of MSM in low and middle income countries has become a global priority. This paper makes an important contribution to reducing the research gap that has existed until now and clearly sheds light on the needs of this group both in terms of public health and human rights.”   The study used data that is periodically collected as part of the monitoring of progress on commitments member countries made at the UN General Assembly Special meeting on HIV in 2001. The First Gay Fraternity Expands For The First Time To Indiana

The nation’s first exclusively college-based gay and gay-allied fraternity is expanding for the first time beyond its original Arizona State University (ASU) chapter. Sigma Phi Beta, which launched at ASU in 2003, is preparing to open its second chapter at Indiana University in 2010 where sophomore Joshua Thomas has begun the process to create the second nationally recognized chapter of the organization. The organization’s goal is to establish five chapters, which is the amount necessary to join the North-American Interfraternity Conference, Thomas said. However, establishing five chapters has proven to be more difficult for a gay fraternity than a non-gay-allied fraternity, he said. “Of course … there is some hesitation. It’s a new idea,” Thomas said. Sam Holdren, an ASU alumnus who was a member of the founding chapter, is now the director of communications at Sigma Phi Beta’s national headquarters in Tempe. “I remember first coming on campus, getting involved in the LGBT community, helping to start up the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Coalition at ASU … protesting in the student senate and getting snickers from people in the audience, just at the words ‘LGBT,’” Holdren said. “The campus shifted after that.” Members of other Greek organizations have changed in their attitudes toward the fraternity as well, he said. “I think a lot of other Greeks are more open now than they were before,” Holdren said. Of the many Greek organizations at ASU, Peter Haslag, president of ASU’s Delta Upsilon fraternity, said Sigma Phi Beta brings diversity to the table, adding that Greek life at ASU has been very accepting “Some guys don’t feel like they would have a place in a regular fraternity … I think they might get treated differently, and this is an opportunity for them,” Haslag said. The fraternity has offered an opportunity for gay students to take part in everything Greek life has to offer, without feeling uncomfortable or having to hide their sexual orientation, said Michael Begay, the current president of Sigma Phi Beta. “A lot has changed since I was a pledge,” he said. The organization won Chapter of the Year at ASU in 2007 and 2008 for the ASU Greek Life Awards and has become very involved in community service. The organization hit another milestone last Monday when it initiated its 100th member, Holdren said. He attributed the growing number to the unique opportunities for gay men to be themselves within the Greek community. Thomas said that wanting to become involved in Greek life, but doubting whether he would be comfortable in a traditional Greek setting, was his motivation. He contacted Sigma Phi Beta’s national headquarters to begin the process of establishing a chapter at Indiana University earlier this semester. Thomas will have to show that he is able to recruit people to join the organization and demonstrate they can be successful at that campus, he said. “We want to have a comfortable place for everyone of every sexual orientation,” Thomas said. The fraternity is also open to straight students who are gay-allied, and Thomas said he hopes to have allied members to create a bond and break down segregation between the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity and others on campus. “There is always going to be some opposition to change … but we have had more support than opposition,” he said. Thomas works with the Greek Life office at IU to garner support from alumni and students. The organization will hopefully enhance the student life experience for gay students and give them a chance to use philanthropy events to benefit the LGBT community, he said. Haslag’s said the fraternity’s success at ASU is an example for future chapters. “It’s definitely a different change, a different feel from traditional Greek life, but if you look at a university that’s larger than most, and see the success we have had at ASU, there is no reason they can’t have success there as well.”
