Alleged Killers Of Gay School Principal Arrested, Killers Met Victim In Chat Line

Montgomery County Maryland Police have charged two teens Monday in the murder of gay District of Columbia. middle school principal Brian Betts. Betts, 42, a principal at Shaw Middle School the District of Columbia and a lead figure in education reform efforts in the District, was found dead in his Silver Spring home April 15 by colleagues worried after he failed to show up for work. According to the Washington Post, Sharif Tau Lancaster and Alante Saunders, both 18, were charged with murder, robbery and a handgun violation. Police said that a third 18-year-old man was being held and that they expected that he would also be charged in the killing. Investigators say they think the trio used a phone hook-up line line to find a target to rob and Montgomery Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said today that there was no indication that Betts alleged killers had any relationship with Betts before he arranged a meeting with one or more of them on the phone line. District of Columbia officials also say that Lancaster and Saunders had recently escaped from the custody of a D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services home, but it was not clear whether they were considered escapees at the time of Betts’s killing. According to Chief Manger, investigators tracked the trio down after Lancaster, Saunders and Lancaster’s mother used credit cards stolen from Betts at several DC area businesses and from fingerprints police found in Betts home and in his stolen SUV.

Here Is What You Need To Know To Get Married in Washington D.C. (11 Easy Steps):

Effective March 3, 2010, same-sex couples may apply for marriage licenses in the District of Columbia. Are you and your partner ready to get married? If so, here's what you need to know before getting married in Washington D.C.:
Here's How:
  1. Age Requirement The minimum age for marriage in the District of Columbia is 18 years or 16 years with the consent of a parent or guardian. Applicants should bring driver's licenses, birth certificates, passports, or similar official document to show proof of age.
  2. Cost The Marriage License Application fee is $35.00. However, the fee is waived if a Domestic Partnership Certificate is presented at the time of application. The marriage certificate fee is $10.00. The Marriage Bureau only accepts cash or money orders (made out to Clerk, D.C. Superior Court).
  3. Previous Marriages Divorce happens. So does finding love again. If either of you have been previously married, be prepared to show your divorce papers. You'll need to provide the city, state, country of each previous marriage and the ending status, such as, by divorce or death. Home and work telephone numbers for both you and your ex(s) are also requested.
  4. Waiting Period Three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued.
  5. Blood And Other Tests As of September 11, 2008, a blood test is no longer a requirement to obtain a marriage license in the District of Columbia.
  6. Marriage License The Marriage License Application must include social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth for both parties as well as previous marriage information (see above). Also, in order to pick up your license, you must show your receipt for payment. Unfortunately licenses in the District are not issued by mail, so you have to pick it up in person.
  7. Wedding Officiator Even after you apply, your marriage isn't valid unless an ordained and licensed clergymen or justices of the peace officiates over your ceremony. Your "endorser" must be from the same religious society and registered with the Marriage Bureau Section, Family Court.
  8. Ceremony You can request a Civil Wedding performed by a court official in a room that fits up to 15 people. All free of charge. Request it at the time of registration, specifying the date and time you would like to be married and at least 10 days from the date of application. A clerk will call you to confirm a date.
  9. Copies of Certificate You can request a copy of your marriage certificate on the same day as the ceremony for $10 (cash or money order) or by mail at: Moultrie Courthouse 500 Indiana Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20001 Higher fees may apply for triple seal certificates used for adoption and foreign jurisdictions.
  10. Planning Plan your ceremony month-by-month with this same-sex wedding planner. On a budget? Learn how you and your fiance can save a few dollars and still have a beautiful ceremony.

Washington, D.C. On Track To Allowing Gay Marriages Starting Tomorrow!

Barring interference from Congress or President Obama, gay marriages will be allowed in Washington, D.C. beginning tomorrow. In December, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed a bill to allow same-sex marriages in the nation's capitol. The bill then entered a 30-day review period in Congress. The bill will become law tomorrow unless Congress introduces a joint-resolution, or President Obama fails to sign it into law. Starting tomorrow, same-sex couples can apply for marriage licenses, though they must wait three business days to receive them. AP reporting

Gay Man Found Shot To Death In Car Over Holiday Weekend

The details behind the holiday shooting death of a gay man in the District of Columbia remain a mystery, gay weekly DC Agenda reported. Anthony J. Perkins was found shot to death by police responding to “reports of the sound of gunfire” on Sunday, at approximately 5:15AM in the vicinity of 4th Street SE and Oakwood. The twenty-nine-year-old victim was found “seated inside of a car that had steam billowing from its engine compartment.” Medical personnel pronounced Perkins dead on the scene. D.C. police are asking the community for help in their investigation into the murder of a 29-year-old gay man who was found shot to death inside his car early Sunday morning in Southeast Washington near Bolling Air Force Base. Police said they found Anthony J. Perkins, whom they described as a “shooting victim,” seated inside of a car on the 2900 block of 4th St., S.E., about 5:15 a.m. Dec. 27. A police statement says the car had steam billowing from its engine when officers responded to reports of the sound of gunfire. “D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department personnel responded to the scene, but could find no life signs,” the statement says. The statement says Perkins was a resident of the 1800 block of T Street, S.E., which is located about two miles from where he was killed. A resident on the block where Perkins lived told DC Agenda it was well known among his neighbors that he was gay. The resident said Perkins lived with his mother. Lt. Paul Wingate of the police homicide squad told DC Agenda that a member of Perkins’ family informed homicide investigators that Perkins was gay. “We have no idea what the motive is,” Wingate said. However, he said investigators have no evidence so far to indicate the murder was a hate crime. Wingate declined to say how many times Perkins was shot or whether he was shot by someone sitting beside him inside the car or whether the shots came from outside the vehicle. “He was an intended target,” Wingate said. “It was not a random shooting.” Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the homicide squad office at 202-645-9600 or the 24-hour police hotline at 202-727-9099. A reward of up to $25,000 is offered to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.

Same-Sex Couples Celebrated A Victory Friday Night In Our Nation's Capital (video)

DC Gay MarriageThere was thunderous applause Friday night at All Souls Church, where Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty signed a bill legalizing same sex marriage. But no one's hearing wedding bells just yet. The measure must pass a 30-day congressional review before it can go into effect. Mayor Fenty called the bill the end to an era of struggle for residents in D.C. He says the city is taking a leap forward in ensuring freedom and equality for all.
"Marriage inequality is a civil rights, political, social, moral and religious issue in this country and in many nations. And as I sign this act into law the District of Columbia from this day forward will set the tone for other jurisdictions to follow in creating an open and inclusive city."
Supporters expect the bill to breeze thru congress. If it passes, you could see same-sex marriages in the district as early as March. Opponents hope to derail that plan.

Lambda Rising Bookstore To Close Stores in Washington, DC

lambda_rising_bookstoreGay and Lesbian bookstore Lambda Rising will close its two stores in Washington D.C. and Rehoboth Beach. In a statement, founder Deacon Maccubbin said the store was started in order to bring attention to gay and lesbian literature, but the genre is now available in all major bookstores. "The phrase 'mission accomplished' has gotten a bad rap in recent years, but in this case, it certainly applies," he said. rising_Lambda_bookstoreThe store was founded in 1974 on a shoestring budget by Maccubbin, whom we profiled a few years back. The store is located in 1625 Connecticut Ave., its third location. The news comes just weeks after The Washington Blade, the city's weekly gay and lesbian newspaper, announced its closure. Lambda Rising will operate through the Christmas season, and continue to install its holiday window display. The store will hold a liquidation sale after Christmas and close in early January.

City Officials Seek Court Order To Close Gay Party

Male_nudes_wrestlingD.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles is seeking an injunction to shut down the so-called gay Men's Party operating out of a townhouse at 1618 14th St., N.W., saying the gathering is operating as a business without the required license. The action this week in D.C. Superior Court comes 11 days after a gathering participant was found dead on the premises from an apparent accidental fall. It also follows news reports that the Men's Party was operating as a gay male sex club and that the Logan Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission has asked the city to determine whether the gathering was complying with city laws and regulations. The six-page lawsuit says that the Men's Party, as an unauthorized business, is using the townhouse where it operates without a required Certificate of Occupancy designated for a business. The lawsuit says the Men's Party is instead improperly operating under an occupancy permit designated for "a single family dwelling." Defendants in the suit are identified in the court filing as the D.C. Wrestling Club, Inc., David J. Butler, director and owner; David J. Butler; and 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC c/o S. Jaffe. The 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC is identified as the owner of the building. City law "authorizes the attorney general of the District of Columbia to institute an action for injunctive relief to abate the illegal operation of a business without the appropriate certificate of occupancy," the lawsuit says. "Wherefore, plaintiff prays that the court issue an injunction enjoining defendants, David J. Butler, DC Wrestling Club, Inc., and 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC, from operating and hosting "men's parties" at the premises until such time as they obtain the required Certificate of Occupancy from the Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs to engage in legal activity." The suit makes no mention of the Men's Party purported operations as a sex club, however we have been researching and found the sex party operates by proclaiming that it is an organization of men who enjoy "wrestling".

19 y/o Sentenced to 180 days For Assualt Leading to Death of Gay Man

Robert Hannah - Photo: US Marshal's Service

Robert Hannah - Photo: US Marshal's Service

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly six months in jail the beating death of a man outside a Washington gay club. Robert Hannah pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for punching Tony Hunter, who fell backward after he was struck and hit his head. Hunter died after 10 days in a coma.
The lack of more severe charges in the case has outraged activists in Washington's gay community. Prosecutors have said they had problems with witnesses and that Hunter was drunk when he was punched, which may have made it harder for him to keep his balance. Hannah claimed Hunter had tried to come on to him and touched his groin and buttocks, which he said led to the assault. Hunter's friend said he did not see the victim touch Hannah. D.C. Superior Court Judge Rafael Diaz sentenced Hannah on Wednesday to 180 days in jail, the maximum possible sentence. Tony Hunter, who lived in Maryland, died days after police said Hannah punched him several times during a Sept. 10, 2008 “altercation” at Eighth and N streets, N.W. Police said Hunter fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement, causing a severe brain injury that led to his death. Police arrested Hannah in connection with Hunter’s death and charged him with one count of voluntary manslaughter. But a grand jury discarded the manslaughter charge in July and indicted Hannah on the misdemeanor charge of simple assault. A sentencing memorandum says that Hunter’s friend presented inconsistent and contradictory information to police and prosecutors and was not a reliable witness. Gay groups have claimed Hannah used the gay panic defence and this was believed by the jury. They have also questioned why Hannah's witness seem to be believed over Hunter's friend and why the charge had been reduced. Police and the US attorney's office said last autumn that there was enough evidence to bring a manslaughter charge against Hannah.

DC Holds Vigil To End Hate

telaviv1Jewish leaders in Washington have held a vigil to show solidarity with Israeli victims of a shooting attack on a gay community center in Tel Aviv that killed two people and wounded 15 others. Rabbis at the vigil called for an end to hate crimes and criticized Israel's ultra-orthodox community for excluding gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals. At least 150 members of Washington's Jewish community, gathered Monday night to remember two Israelis killed by a masked gunman at a Tel Aviv gay community center on Saturday. Many of them sang songs and drew banners appealing for tolerance and denouncing prejudice and homophobia. Organizers of the vigil included rabbis from several Jewish denominations and gay and lesbian Jewish activists. They condemned the shooting as a hate crime and called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.

Israeli police are searching for the gunman, who opened fire on teenage boys and girls attending a support group meeting at the community center. The gunman killed a 26-year-old man and a teenage girl in the worst ever attack on gays in Israel. Jewish community leader Mark Pelavin addressed the vigil on behalf of the North American Union for Reform Judaism.
"Despite the feelings of anger, frustration, and sadness that envelop our hearts, we gather here tonight - to mourn, to remember, and above all, to offer our own solemn promise that none of us will rest until all of us are safe," he said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the attack as a violation of Israel's democratic values. Martin Peled-Flax is a representative of the Israeli Embassy in Washington. He told the crowd that Israel regards itself as one of the most pluralistic societies in the Middle East.
"Israel has made major steps over the last two decades so that society would become accepting of people who are different - of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender individuals. Today, there are openly gay career army officers, there are openly lesbian Israeli diplomats," said Pelde-Flax.
But, many Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jews do not approve of the homosexual lifestyle, viewing it as contrary to Jewish law. Their leaders have strongly denounced annual gay pride parades held in several Israeli cities. An Orthodox rabbi at the Washington vigil accused some ultra-Orthodox Israelis of creating an environment that encourages acts of hatred against gays. Shmuel Herzfeld urged ultra-Othodox Jews to do some soul-searching.
"One of the things I am suggesting is a communal statement that synagogues sign on to, and that has language that creates a playing field that makes it clear that such language and violence will not be accepted, that people who are gay are welcome to pray and participate in synagogue life and that religion is not about excluding and hating but about finding areas where we can come and be in the presence of the divine," said Herzfeld.
Leaders of Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish minority quickly condemned the Tel Aviv shooting as murder and called for the gunman to be caught and punished. Israeli police have not identified the attacker as belonging to any particular religious or ethnic group. But the shooting has intensified the controversy in Israel over the growing prominence of the country's gay community.

American Apparel Responds

2001LG_02Anti-gay vandals targeted a couple of Washington, DC area American Apparel stores over the stores’ prominent “Legalize Gay” T-Shirt displays early in the week. On Monday, a window at the Silver Spring, Maryland location was shattered. Yesterday, an anonymous caller informed the Georgetown location that as long as “Legalize Gay” is on display, the storefronts can expect more broken glass. Following the second threat, Silver Spring American Apparel manager Kassandra Powell told reporters that the store had temporarily removed the anti-Prop-8 clothing from its window display. Last night, company spokesperson Ryan Holiday wrote in to the Washington City Paper stating that “Legalize Gay” was there to stay. “The store employee misspoke about taking the display down,” wrote Holiday. “[T]hose decisions get made in Los Angeles and we wouldn’t want to give into something like this.” In a statement, American Apparel’s Jonny Makeup made clear that the two local incidents would only strengthen its marriage equality efforts in D.C. The company will:
“continue to run Legalize Gay advertisements in papers across DC-Metro area,” wrote Makeup. Some Washingtonians may even get some free stuff out of the deal: “We’ll also send Legalize Gay t-shirts to any group in Washington DC that is fighting for gay rights,”
