Elton John: 'So what's the fuck up with these people?'

Performing this past Thursday night in Tucson, Arizona superstar Elton John snubbed a boycott of Arizona,
"We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are fuckwits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the fuck up with these people?" - Elton John, speaking from the stage at Thursday's concert in Tucson
The 63-year-old singer-songwriter drew the ire of gay rights groups last month when he accepted a $1 million paycheck for performing at the wedding of Rush Limbaugh, who has a long track record of demeaning minorities, including the LGBT community. John entered a civil partnership in the UK with filmmaker David Furnish in 2005.

Ted Haggard: 'I Over-Repented' For My Meth-Gay Prostitute 'Crisis'

Rev. Ted Haggard has been leading his own new church for the past few months, and in a Wall Street Journal profile says he thinks he "over-repented" for an affair with a male prostitute, which he refers to as "my crisis." He also insists he's not gay -- and that his affair was just a massage gone wrong. The profile describes Haggard's new backyard barn church, which features bags of cement and a pulpit made of buckets. Haggard, who announced his new St. James Church in June, told the Journal:
"Tiger Woods needs to golf. Michael Vick needs to be playing football. Ted Haggard needs to be leading a church."
Haggard was founder and leader of the powerful evangelical New Life Church, before he was forced to resign in 2006 after he admitted to buying meth from a male prostitute, with whom he also had an affair. As recently as November 2008, Haggard's former friends in the New Life church expressed skepticism regarding Haggard's ability to lead, releasing a statement saying that "we cannot endorse his return to vocational ministry."

Elton John Performs At Rush Limbaugh’s Wedding

Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh married his fourth wife, Kathryn Rogers, in a lavish wedding that saw openly gay entertainer Elton John as the musical guest. For someone being conservative, it’s pretty entertaining that it was his fourth wife and the musical entertainment was a gay man. Maybe it was all of those prescription drugs he was using. But wait, according to Limbaugh, “drug use is bad… drug users should be accused, convicted, and sent to prison.” As for Elton John, it was reported that he was paid $1 million dollars to perform, but with all the gay bashing that Limbaugh does, wouldn’t you think that John would particularly want to stay away from this ceremony? I wonder what Limbaugh’s groom speech was like: “…let’s say we discover the gene that says the kid’s gonna be gay. How many parents, if they knew before the kid was gonna be born, [that he] was gonna be gay, they would take the pregnancy to term? Well, you don’t know but let’s say half of them said, “Oh, no, I don’t wanna do that to a kid.” [Then the] gay community finds out about this. The gay community would do the fastest 180 and become pro-life faster than anybody you’ve ever seen. … They’d be so against abortion if it was discovered that you could abort what you knew were gonna be gay babies.” Limbaugh is just happy that his wife is almost half his age. I mean, if you’re going to live your life as a hypocrite, I mean conservative, at least marry young and pretty. What it must be like to be rich. OUR PREVIOUS REPORT The New York Daily News is reporting that Rush Limbaugh, who is getting married for the fourth time today, has enlisted the music services of Sir Elton John for the festivities, and John agreed. Has no one told Limbaugh about Elton John’s, um, that he’s, you know? From the New York Daily News:
The conservative firebrand, 59, will exchange vows Saturday in Florida with Kathryn Rogers – a blond bombshell half his age – in a lavish Hawaiian-themed wedding bash headlined by none-other-than Sir Elton John. It’s an odd pairing considering El Rushbo’s history of anti-gay commentary on his conservative radio show and the openly gay “Tiny Dancer” singer’s longtime commitment to gay rights.
Apparently Limbaugh, who asked the paper for privacy on the occasion, can put aside his political beliefs for a special occasion (Limbaugh is openly against gay marriage; John married his husband in 2005). The report doesn’t say exactly whose idea it was or whether John initially objected, but he is reportedly taking home $1 million for the performance at Palm Beach’s Breakers Hotel. Between Elton John and an uninvited Gawker-funded airplane flying over his ceremony, this is quickly turning into the most liberal high-profile wedding of the season. Congratulations, Rush!

IN CASE YOU WONDER ABOUT RUSH:

Rush Limbaugh, the current de facto leader of the Republican Party, is known to be bigoted and homophobic. And while he speaks to Conservatives, it’s important that you know what he has to say about you. Here you go, five of Rush Limbaugh’s most offensive, anti-gay, homophobic, bigoted comments:
  1. Aired a song about Senator Barney Frank called “Banking Queen“.
  2. Democrats will “bend over, grab the ankles, and say, ‘Have your way with me’” to African American and gay voters.
  3. On the Mark Foley scandal: “In their hearts and minds and their crotches, they don’t have any problem with what Foley did. They’ve defended it over the — over the years.
  4. Openly gay students are “trumpeting” their sexuality, “inviting dissent”.
  5. When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it’s an invitation
Lastly, there’s this one, which I have yet to figure out how many sensibilities it offends:
“…let’s say we discover the gene that says the kid’s gonna be gay. … They’d be so against abortion if it was discovered that you could abort what you knew were gonna be gay babies.”

Elton John Writes Open Letter To Victim Who Inspired Him - and America

Singer/songwriter Elton John has written an open letter to the deceased teenager he credits with u-turning his drug addiction and revolutionising AIDS action in America.

John, 63, published the personally-composed letter to Ryan White, a former friend of the star who died from AIDS in 1990 aged 18, in The Washington Post newspaper.

White, who became a national poster child for HIV/AIDS in the United States after being expelled from middle school because of his infection, contracted the HIV virus from a contaminated blood transfusion.

To mark the twentieth anniversary of his death, John declared that he would "gladly give up fame and fortune" to have one more conversation with him.

He also claimed that the former student, who was shunned by his peers and elders, conducted himself with a dignity which sparked an overhaul of America's approach to HIV care.

Jeanne White and Elton John beside Ryan White in his hospital bed in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital in Indianapolis several days before Ryan's death in April 1990. Jeanne had asked not to photograph Ryan's face because she did not want to remember his very swollen condition. Ryan is in a coma but Jeanne White and Elton John are speaking gently to him. Jeanne is reaching for Ryan's hand.

_____________________________________________________________________

Dear Ryan, Twenty years ago this month, you died of AIDS. I would gladly give my fame and fortune if only I could have one more conversation with you, the friend who changed my life as well as the lives of millions living with HIV. Instead, I have written you this letter. I remember so well when we first met. A young boy with a terrible disease, you were the epitome of grace. You never blamed anyone for the illness that ravaged your body or the torment and stigma you endured. When students, parents and teachers in your community shunned you, threatened you and expelled you from school, you responded not with words of hate but with understanding beyond your years. You said they were simply afraid of what they did not know. When the media heralded you as an “innocent victim” because you had contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, you rejected that label and stood in solidarity with thousands of HIV-positive women and men. You reminded America that all victims of AIDS are innocent. When you became a celebrity, you embraced the opportunity to educate the nation about the AIDS epidemic, even though your only wish was to live an ordinary life. Ryan, I wish you could know how much the world has changed since 1990, and how much you changed it. Young boys and girls with HIV attend school and take medicine that allows them to lead normal lives. Children in America are seldom born with the virus, and they no longer contract it through transfusions. The insults and injustices you suffered are not tolerated by society. Most important, Ryan, you inspired awareness, which helped lead to lifesaving treatments. In 1990, four months after you died, Congress passed the Ryan White Care Act, which now provides more than $2 billion each year for AIDS medicine and treatment for half a million Americans. Today, countless people with HIV live long, productive lives. It breaks my heart that you are not one of them. You were 18 when you died, and you would be 38 this year, if only the current treatments existed when you were sick. I think about this every day, because America needs your message of compassion as never before. Ryan, when you were alive, your story sparked a national conversation about AIDS. But despite all the progress in the past 20 years, the dialogue has waned. I know you would be trying to revive it if you were here today, when the epidemic continues to strike nearly every demographic group, with more than 50,000 new infections in the United States each year. I know you would be loudly calling for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy that was promised by President Obama but has not yet been delivered. I know you would reach out to young people. I know you would work tirelessly to help everyone suffering from HIV, including those who live on the margins of society. It would sadden you that today, in certain parts of the United States, some poor people with AIDS are still placed on waiting lists to receive treatment. It would anger you that your government is still not doing enough to help vulnerable people with HIV and populations that are at high risk of contracting the virus, including sexually active teenagers. It would upset you that AIDS is a leading cause of death among African Americans. It would frustrate you that even though hundreds of thousands of HIV-positive Americans are receiving treatment in your name, more than 200,000 don’t know their HIV-positive status, largely because of a lingering stigma surrounding the disease that prevents them from being tested. It would disappoint you that many teenagers do not have access to science-based HIV-prevention programs in school, at a time when half of new infections are believed to be among people under 25. I miss you so very much, Ryan. I was by your side when you died at Riley Hospital. You’ve been with me every day since. You inspired me to change my life and carry on your work. Because of you, I’m still in the struggle against AIDS, 20 years later. I pledge to not rest until we achieve the compassion for which you so bravely and beautifully fought. Your friend, Elton

Man Arrested for Threatening Elton John’s Life

Elton John has a famous fan in Lady Gaga, but not everyone appreciates the awesome power of “Tiny Dancer.” A Georgia man was arrested Wednesday for making terrorist threats against Sir Elton. Last month Neal Horsley, 65, posted a YouTube video of himself standing in front of the singer’s Atlanta apartment complex holding a large red sign that said “Elton John Must Die.” Horsley was upset about a Parade magazine interview in which John said he thought Jesus was a “compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems.” “We’re here today to remind Elton John that he has to die,” Horsley says in the video. “What Elton John has done is desecrated the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, blasphemed the Lord Jesus Christ.” He goes on to use homophobic slurs and quote scripture. This isn’t the first time Horsley — who has a surprisingly thorough Wikipedia page — has raised eyebrows. A militant anti-abortionist, he started a Website in the late 1990s that listed the names and addresses of doctors who performed abortions. Two years ago, Horsley founded the Creator’s Rights Party in Georgia and claims to be a candidate for the 2010 governor’s race. According to the AP, he kicked off his campaign wearing a placard showing a picture of an aborted fetus. The state ethics committee, meanwhile, has no record of his campaign. Horsley’s bail is set at $40,000. Elton John’s publicist confirmed that the singer has an apartment in Atlanta, but wouldn’t tell the AP anything more.

Christians Riled Over Elton's Remarks About Jesus

Pop legend Elton John is making waves again -- this time over remarks he made in a magazine interview, saying that Jesus Christ was a "super-intelligent gay man," causing fury among conservative Christians. In an interview with U.S. magazine, Parade, the 62-year-old musician said, "I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. "On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you're as good as dead." The remarks are provoking more ire within Christian groups and denominations amid debate over consecrating gay members of the clergy in the U.S., a topic so sensitive that bishops are considering breaking away from the Anglican church in the U.S. over the matter.

Eminem Talks About His Friendship With Elton John To Spare His Image Among The Gay Folks [video] -

When Eminem found himself unable to pull himself out of a prescription-drug-fueled spiral of self-destruction, he turned to his friend Elton John for help — and continues to do so to this day, as John made clear in a recent interview. But this wasn't the first time the rapper leaned on the pop-music elder statesman for support. When Em was getting heat for purportedly homophobic lyrics at the beginning of the millennium, he appeared with John at the 2001 Grammy Awards for an unforgettable rendition of "Stan." "We were debating on whether I was going to perform the Grammys or not," the rapper told MTV News after the performance. "I was like, 'The only way I'll perform at the Grammys is with Elton John.' And I was saying it in kind of jest, thinking it would never happen. The idea of it started becoming more, 'OK, this is a way to really flip it around and really f--- people's heads up." Eminem said when the idea for the performance first came up, he was unaware of John's sexual orientation. "Of course, I heard of Elton John," he told MTV News in 2004. "I didn't know he was gay. I didn't know anything about his personal life. I didn't really care. But being that he was gay and he had my back, I think it made a statement in itself saying that he understood where I was coming from." The rapper recently raised eyebrows again with his new song "Elevator," which included lyrics about openly gay singers Adam Lambert, Clay Aiken and Lance Bass that may be construed as an anti-gay slur. Neither Eminem nor John has made any statement about the possibly controversial words.

Back in 2001, Eminem took home three Grammys, but it was his duet with John — they embraced after the song and held up their hands together in solidarity — that became that moment everyone was talking about the next day. "It was more so just a statement, period," the rapper said in 2001. "If you really think that about me, you really don't know Marshall. You really don't know me."

Gay Icon Exhibit

_45604875_joe_otherpicgal6The late Diana, Princess of Wales, and former South African President Nelson Mandela are two of the personalities identified as “Gay Icons” in an exhibition bearing that title that will open in July in London, England at the National Portrait Gallery. US actor Joe Dallesandro appeared in several of Andy Warhol's films and is shown here to the left. Click Here to see the Photo Gallery presented by BBC Online While the show’s title may summon up a stereotypical list of performers such as Barbra Streisand or Kylie Minogue, organizers said, neither is represented. Instead, the 10 gay men and women on the selection panel, including singer Elton John, actor Ian McKellen and ex-tennis champion Billie Jean King, have each picked six people who inspired them and helped shape who they are, irrespective of sexual orientation. As the portraits in the show had to be photographs, Michelangelo and Alexander the Great were ruled out, said Sandi Toksvig, the comedian and broadcaster who headed the Gallery's panel. So were William Shakespeare and Leonardo da Vinci, she said. Toksvig picked his lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as the late cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who battled for freedom and democracy inside and outside Russia. Toksvig put Mandela on her list to recognize his struggle for rights. Others chose Harvey Milk -- the first openly gay man in California to be elected to political office -- and Toksvig also included singer K.D. Lang.

Princess Diana was one of the six names coming from Waheed Alli, a member of the House of Lords and executive chairman of Chorion Plc, a U.K. producer of Agatha Christie TV dramas.  The exhibition will take place at the National Portrait Gallery from July 2 to Oct. 18. Elton John Loses Libel Case

Elton John was not defamed by a British newspaper that offered a satirical take of the rock singer, a High Court judge has ruled. High Court Justice Michael Tugendhat found that while The Guardian did offer a satirical column about the “Crocodile Rock” singer, the article did not amount to libel and the court’s ruling was not subject to appeal, the newspaper reported Saturday. Marina Hyde’s July literary offering, “A peek at the diary of Sir Elton John,” prompted the knighted British singer to file his libel suit against the publication.

The singer alleged the article questioned his commitment to the Elton John Aids Foundation and accused him of using related events as self-promotion opportunities. But Tugendhat wrote his judgment that the article and its featured attribution were clearly not meant to inflict harm, but rather use irony to entertain.

“The transparently false attribution is irony,” Tugendhat said. “Irony is a figure of speech in which the intended meaning is the opposite of that expressed by the words used … . The attribution is literally false but no reasonable reader could be misled by it.”
