Malaysia May Screen First Gay-Themed Film?

Malaysia's first gay-themed movie could hit cinemas within months, its producer said, after government censors eased restrictions that have stifled the film industry here for decades. Although the Malay-language movie won't have explicit sex or even kissing, its screening would be a huge step forward for freedom of popular media in this Muslim-majority country that many fear is coming under the influence of Islamic conservatism. "Dalam Botol," or "In A Bottle," centers on a man whose relationship with his male partner crumbles after he undergoes sex change surgery, said Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, who produced the film and wrote the screenplay based on the experiences of her friend. "We are taking a risk," Raja Azmi, a longtime movie producer, said in an interview this week. "I'm very nervous. We still don't know if the censors will allow our movie to be shown in the end." Raja Azmi submitted a preliminary script last year to the Home Ministry's Film Censorship Board, which verbally approved it after advising her not to shoot scenes of men kissing or being in bed together. Censors also told her to change the original title: "Anu Dalam Botol," or "Penis in a Bottle." The film's two leads had trouble "getting loose and comfortable in the first few days," but they adjusted to their roles before filming ended earlier this year, Raja Azmi said. "We still shot scenes of skin-to-skin intimacy, with them hugging passionately," she said. "Without that, we wouldn't be able to show how much the characters really love each other." Censors are unlikely to permit such scenes for Malaysian audiences, who are accustomed to bland, generic comedies and romances. Censorship board officials declined to comment until Raja Azmi submits the film to them. But Raja Azmi — who spent about 700,000 ringgit ($200,000) to make the film — said she hopes to show an uncut version at film festivals abroad. Malaysian censors have faced criticism for trimming or banning racy movies. Banned Hollywood films include Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno," which the board said promoted homosexuality because it focused on a flamboyant gay fashion journalist. The board recently revamped its rules, saying themes such as homosexuality would no longer be forbidden. However, the guidelines suggest filmmakers should rebuke behavior that is considered immoral, including gambling, consuming alcohol and being sexually promiscuous. Raja Azmi — who counts the Oscar-winning gay-themed "Brokeback Mountain" as a favorite movie — declined to speculate on whether censors approved her script only because it depicts bad consequences for its characters. She stressed the movie was "a nonfiction tragedy about my friend." It is possible that even a sanitized version of "Dalam Botol" may not placate some of Malaysia's conservative Islamic religious figures, who have pushed in recent years for yoga to be banned and people to be caned for drinking alcohol. Sodomy — even consensual — is punishable by 20 years in prison; prosecutions are rare, though the country's top opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, is currently on trial for allegedly sodomizing a male former aide in what he calls a fabricated, politically motivated charge. Gay Films Seized in Canada

seized_laptopIs Canada an egalitarian gay haven? Think again. Marcus McCann reports in Xtra.com that Canada Border Services Agency customs officers have seized three gay-themed films en route to Ottawa’s three-day Inside Out gay film festival, which ends Sunday, Nov. 22. No explanation was given for the seizure — which, of course, is exactly what you’d expect to happen in a true democracy. The films are supposed to remain in custody until they’re watched in full by some border censor or other. (Curiously, the Inside Out website makes no mention of the border incident.) The three films in question are Adrian Shergold’s made-for-TV Clapham Junction, which follows a group of gay men in Clapham, South London, and which has some nudity; Shamim Sarif’s I Can’t Think Straight, a Middle East-set lesbian love story starring Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth; and Ella Lemhagen’s PG-rated Patrik Age. 1.5, the story of a gay couple who mistakenly end up adopting a teen thug. All three films have already been screened elsewhere in Canada. All three are Here! releases, a US-based distributor of gay-themed movies. In the past, Canadian border officials have been accused of harassing gays, and of arbitrarily confiscating gay literature and movies. Despite the country’s reputation of being more "liberal" than its southern neighbor, its border cops, obsessed with obscenity, are known as anything but — especially when it comes to homosexuality. In 2000, the Vancouver-based bookstore Little Sister’s sued the CBSA, taking the matter all the way to Canada’s Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the bookstore. Clearly, the ruling hasn’t prevented the agency from going after other gay-oriented venues. When told about the pending fate of the festival’s three films, festivalgoers booed and hissed upon hearing mention of the CBSA. Now, the question is: why haven’t those bigots been sued again so they’ll stop — for good — their anti-gay harassment?

Atlanta’s Gay Film Festival

outonfilm

Out on Film, Atlanta’s GLBTQ film festival, kicks off a weekend festival May 28th with the GLBTQ film festival debut of Erin Davies “Fagbug.” On the 11th annual National Day of Silence (April 18, 2007), Erin Davies was victim to a hate crime in Albany, NY. Because of sporting a rainbow sticker on her VW Beetle, Erin's car was vandalized, left with the words "fAg" and "u r gay" placed on the hood and driver side of her car. Despite initial shock and embarrassment, Erin's decided to embrace what happened and film a documentary about her 58-day cross country tour around the US and Canada in her car known worldwide as the fagbug. Following the screening on May 28th will be a Q&A with Erin Davies. The festival will also feature the Atlanta debut of “Mulligans,” starring Charlie David of “Dante’s Cove” and Logo’s ‘Bump!” The film’s executive producer, Joshua Harrell, is an Atlantan. Other films in the schedule include the French romantic comedy “The New World;” the African American comedy “Finding Me;” the documentary “The Universe of Keith Haring;” an encore screening of “Training Rules,” which won the Pink Peach Award at the recent Atlanta Film Festival; Gwen Haworth’s “She’s A Boy I Knew” and a collection of 10 short films, one of which, “The Confession,’ is by local filmmaker Cameron Abdo.

Closing the festival will be the GLBT film festival debut of “STAND-UP 360™ Inside Out.” Hosted by Caroline Rhea, the film features standup performances by Judy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Hedda Lettuce, Rick Crom, and more gay/lesbian comics. The film will open in theaters this summer. Out on Film is dedicated to showcasing films by, about and for the GLBT community. Last spring, Atlanta Film Festival 365 gave Out on Film to the gay/lesbian community. After successful screenings in January and February, Out on Film is hosting this weekend festival before launching its major festival later in the year. Out on Film’s goal is to produce its annual festival in the fall and offer programming/events throughout the year. The Out on Film weekend will be held at the Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce de Leon Avenue, home of 2006’s successful festival. Festival passes are $30 and individual screenings are $10. More information can be found at www.outonfilm.org. Festival updates can also be found at www.myspace.com/outonfilm

Best Gay Porn Films Blogs

chelsea_rainbow_station

Thirteen blogs that follow the gay adult entertainment industry will begin a collaborative effort to discuss, dish and celebrate the near-decade 2000-2009 in gay porn beginning Friday May 1. The idea sprang from a lunchtime chat during which Onan the Vulgarian mentioned to JC Adams that his 1998 list of the all-time best gay porn films needed updating.
"We're coming to the end of a decade, believe it or not," said Adams. "As a group, we felt it was important to look back at the past 10 years in gay adult and commemorate the highlights ... and lowlights. The adult industry is undergoing a period of retrenchment right now, and at times like these it's useful to examine the past as we try to scry the future."
The 13 bloggers are: JC Adams of Gay Porn Times, Mark Adams of VidioView, the editors of Fleshbot, Butch Harris of ManNet, Mark Kliem of Lavender Lounge, Billy Masters, Jason Sechrest of JasonCurious, Vincent Lambert, Mickey Skee of GAYVN magazine, Nick Young of NickYoungXXX, Onan the Vulgarian of XX-Factor, the editors of TheSword and the editors of GayPornBlog. Each blogger will publish his comments and observations to his own blog, website or other media outlet. The nature of the remarks is up to each individual, and there is no predetermined format or content. Adams said the project will last for at least one week, but may run longer.
