Gay Days Walt Disnery World 2010

What began with controversy 20 years ago is now one of Orlando’s top events each year, with attendance larger than many of the biggest convention groups. It started as just one day at the Magic Kingdom and has expanded to a multi-day event at multiple parks. It’s estimated that 150,000 people attended Gay Days 2010. For comparison, the World of Concrete convention has 90,000 registered and the IAAPA amusement park industry convention has 27,000 registered. The largest official event at Disney now is the January Marathon weekend, with 50,000 registered. (photo from HotSpotsMagazine) Gay Days began in 1991 as a single designated day (the first Saturday in June) when the lesbian, gay and bisexual community and friends were encouraged to “Wear Red and Be Seen” while visiting the world’s most popular theme park. Now young, old, all races and beliefs, parents, friends and others attend each year. The theme parks are the big draw for Gay Days guests, but hotels and smaller attractions also offer deals and travel packages. One of the large convention hotels on International Drive with three separate pool areas was completely booked to Gay Days guests. The Gay Days expo was also held there with booths hosted by vendors ranging from home improvement, to personal care, to entertainment and travel. The below video is now being featured in Time Magazine's article: Gay Days in the Magic Kingdom

Gay-Themed Roadside Digital Billboards Rejected In Florida

Two of the four billboards St. Pete Pride had planned on buying to promote its upcoming festival were rejected by Clear Channel Outdoor, prompting the organization to cancel its pending contract with the outdoor advertising giant. One rejected billboard features a pair of men - shirtless, presumably at a beach - smiling for a photo with the caption "My family is fun."  The other billboard that was rejected features a pair of women lying down at the beach together - presumably in the moment before a kiss - with the caption, "My family is free."

In an email to Clear Channel Outdoor, St. Pete Pride Executive Director Chris Rudisill wrote, "the images that were not selected do not contain anything that is sexual, immoral, illegal or otherwise offensive in nature." "I'm almost certain that you have had billboards in the market which display men and women in both friendly and romantic ways," he continued.  "I can't seem to understand where these images would be any different, except for the fact that they portray two men and two women, respectively." St. Pete Pride is preparing to host its eighth annual festival to promote unity and a positive image of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people around Tampa Bay. In past years, Clear Channel has edited St. Pete Pride's submitted messages, but this year, the organization says it submitted much-less controversial billboards. "St. Pete Pride is determined to focus its message on the family aspect of the GLBT community," said Rudisill in a press release.  "Therefore, (we) would not allow Clear Channel to dictate what message we could convey." One of the approved billboards had an apparent drag queen in leather with the caption "My family is fierce."  The other approved billboard had two men on a couch with a toddler and the caption "My family is fabulous & fearless."

Gays Are More Dangerous Than Guns In Florida?

Yesterday, the Florida legislature passed legislation — backed by the National Rifle Association — that would bar adoption agencies from asking whether prospective parents have guns or ammunition in their homes. The bill “rocketed” out of the legislature and now just needs the signature of Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who supports the measure. The AP explains what prompted the bill:
The issue of adoptions by gun owners came to light after a few prospective parents complained last year that the Children’s Home Society of Florida, the state’s largest provider of services to children and families, was asking applicants to disclose information about weapons or ammunition they keep at home. Florida law bans state agencies or their agents from maintaining a registry of firearm owners.
Florida officials said that the gun measure — which passed unanimously in the House and with the support of everyone except two Democrats in the Senate — “fixes a problem that wasn’t widespread and was the result of a mix-up at the Children’s Home Society.” State Democratic lawmaker Evan Jenne argued that the bill was relatively “innocuous,” and Democratic Rep. Scott Randolph said it was “pandering” to the NRA. Rep. Mike Horner (R) decided to sponsor the bill after an adoption agency asked whether he owned a gun when he and his wife were looking to adopt. Basically, what Florida is saying is that it’s totally fine to own guns if you want to adopt children — just as long as you’re not gay. While state legislators rushed to pass the NRA-backed measure that fixes a relatively small problem, they still haven’t addressed the major issue that gay families are banned from adopting children. A couple of state lawmakers tried to introduce amendments to the gun bill that would have also barred “adoption agencies from inquiring about a person’s sexual orientation as a requisite for adoption,” but they eventually had to withdraw them. Florida is the only state to explicitly outlaw gay and lesbian adoptions. The state implemented its ban in 1977 — two years before the first reported case of an adoption by an openly gay person anywhere in the country. Until this week, there hadn’t been a serious debate on the Florida gay adoption ban in the law’s 33-year history. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that “a majority of Floridians now oppose the ban” and three recent court decisions have ruled that the ban violates Florida’s constitution. Currently, the issue is now “before Florida’s Third District Court of Appeals and is headed most likely to the state Supreme Court" STORY FROM THINKPROGRESS.ORG

WTF -- Deny Tax Breaks to Films With Gay Characters?

A Florida state senator is pushing for new legislation that would increase tax breaks for the movie industry but deny the same incentives to films featuring gay characters. Current Florida law grants tax credits on productions considered "family friendly" -- films that omit smoking, sex, nudity or profane language, But in a bid to attract more movie production to Florida, Republican Rep. Stephen Precourt of Orlando is pushing a bill that would increase the credit and expand the field of disqualified productions as those that include any "exhibit or implied act" of nontraditional family values and gratuitous violence, the Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday. Precourt said he's not targeting the gay community but that shows with gay characters would not be something he'd want "to invest public dollars in." "Think of it as like Mayberry," Precourt reportedly told the newspaper, referring to The Andy Griffith Show. "That's when I grew up -- the '60s. That's what life was like. I want Florida to be known for making those kinds of movies: Disney movies for kids and all that stuff. Like it used to be, you know?" The move has been roundly criticized by opponents, like Ted Howard, executive director for Florida Together, who is quoted by the newspaper saying, "Instituting 1950s-style movie censorship does nothing to support real-life families or help Florida's struggling economy." The bill has to go through several committees before it reaches the House floor, the Miami New Times reported. Click here to read more from the Palm Beach Post. Patrons' Tires Slashed Outside Orlando Gay Nightclub

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that patrons of one of Orlando, Florida's  popular gay nightclub said the tire-slashing of more than two dozen cars goes beyond an act of criminal mischief. Some said it smacks of a hate crime. "There are cars at the nearby apartments, and I have not heard of any tire slashing happening there Monday night," Revolution patron Miguel de Arias said Tuesday. "It's been Latino gay night here for years, and someone had to know that to do what they did." Monday night at Revolution is billed as an evening catering mostly to Hispanic gays and lesbians. Orlando Police aren't ready to classify the incident as a hate crime, spokeswoman Sgt. Barbara Jones said. It is considered a criminal mischief case because there is no proof that it meets state hate-crime standards. State law defines a hate crime as any criminal acts that show prejudice based on race, religion, ethnicity, color, ancestry, sexual orientation or national origin. Orlando police reports show someone slashed and deflated the tires of nearly 30 vehicles parked in a lot along South Street, east of Bumby Avenue, sometime Monday night or early Tuesday morning. The slashings occurred despite the fact the club pays two off-duty Orlando police officers $35 an hour to patrol areas around the club and the fact surveillance cameras monitor activity in the lot, Revolution owner Craig Mestel said. Many of the club's patrons park in that lot, which is not owned or maintained by the owners of the nightclub. Some car owners paid a tow truck to remove their vehicles; others left their disabled cars in the lot. Mestel said he is temporarily contracting with a private agency to add more security. If detectives confirm the tire-slashing incident as a hate crime, it will be the second such crime in the city in the past two months. Orlando police reports show someone defaced the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Community Center and the gay-owned Ritzy Rags, both on Mills Avenue, with a spray-painted swastika and anti-gay slurs in November. Police estimated the damage in that incident cost about $1,000. READ MORE OF THE STORY HERE

A.P.B. - 25,000$ Reward - Effeminate Killer May Be In Your 'Gay Establishment" -

Merhige_WantedA Florida man suspected of gunning down four of his family members on Thanksgiving is now on the U.S. Marshals' list of the top 15 most-wanted fugitives. Paul M. Merhige is accused of fatally shooting his twin sisters, a 6-year-old cousin and a 79-year-old aunt at a family home in Jupiter, Florida, on Nov. 26. One of his sisters was pregnant. A $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest. Along with adding Merhige, 35, to its most-wanted list, the U.S. Marshals Service has released some distinguishing characteristics about him. Merhige might be "homosexual and/or effeminate and may frequent homosexual establishments," according to a U.S. Marshals statement. He also is known to either fake or display symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder, such as frequent bathing and shaving, and difficulty making decisions. He also has faked or displayed symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Merhige has been taking several prescription drugs for the ailments. "Sudden or prolonged cessation of any of his prescribed medication can result in adverse side effects, including seizures and death," according to the Marshals Service. Authorities say Merhige also wounded two other family members during the shooting rampage. He faces four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office has said.

Mark’s List Bought And Will Re-Launch 411 Magazine

marks_listA popular South Florida gay website announced Monday it will launch a companion weekly magazine and biweekly newspaper following the sudden closure Sunday of the nation's largest gay newspaper group. Multimedia Platforms of Oakland Park, which co-owns South Florida-based Mark's List, a gay website with about 5,000 unique visitors daily, next week will launch Mark's List Magazine, a Florida bar and entertainment guide. A newspaper, still unnamed, will begin Nov. 26, said Bobby Blair, managing partner and founder of Multimedia Platforms. "Our focus for the future, and the importance of this transaction, is owning the No. 1 LGBT website," Blair said. "It will certainly sustain our print operation and also will grow." Washington, D.C.-based Window Media and sister company Unite Media on Sunday announced plans to file for bankruptcy, immediately shutting down its papers and magazines in Wilton Manors, Houston, Atlanta and Washington. Last year, the U.S. Small Business Administration took control of Window Media/Unite Media's majority stockholder, financially troubled New York-based Avalon Equity Partners. Blair's group had been negotiating since September with Avalon Equity to purchase the company's South Florida properties, The South Florida Blade newspaper and 411 magazine, a bar guide. The Blade printed 8,500 copies a week; 411 printed 12,500, according to Blair. letter Multimedia Platforms put $250,000 in escrow with Wilton Manors attorney Dean Trantalis. Blair and his partners had planned to buy The Blade and 411 for $175,000 and invest the rest in the business, he said. Window Media/Unite Media decided to filed for bankruptcy after its owners decided to stop putting money in the company, Blair said. That's when Multimedia Platforms decided "we don't need them anymore," said Mark Haines, founder of Mark's List, who recently sold half his company to Blair's group. Multimedia Platforms quickly decided to take the money held in escrow and use it to start a new newspaper and magazine, Haines said. First order of business: hire all the displaced workers at The Blade and 411. "We have everything we need," Haines said. "We have all the contacts, telephone numbers, everything we need to go forward." When the newspaper launches, it will emphasize feature stories rather than hard news. "We're going to make sure it becomes more topical, more lifestyle oriented and more specific to South Florida. A real estate section, movie reviews, restaurant reviews," Blair said. The Blade, a money loser, is history. A final issue of profitable 411 -- already completed before Window Media/Unite Media locked out its workers -- will hit the newsstands Thursday, he said. South Florida's gay media market has been in flux for a decade. South Florida's oldest gay newspaper, TWN (The Weekly News), ran out of money and shut down after 29 years in March 2006. In 2003, Broward attorney Norm Kent sold his 3-year-old, Broward-based Express Gay News to Window Media/Unite Media, which renamed it The South Florida Blade. Blair believes that despite universal troubles in the media world, his group can make a success of the expanded Mark's List brand. "You have a tremendous amount of LGBT-friendly businesses who would love to reach out to the powerful LGBT buying power," Blair said. "That will bode well for growth. They will want to place ads in our publication."

28th Openly Gay Mayor In The United States Sworn In!

keechlA changing of the guard took place this afternoon for Broward County, Florida as a new Mayor took the Oath of Office. Ken Keechl got his turn as Broward mayor, becoming the first openly gay person in that spot and join an elite group as one of a relatively small number of openly gay or lesbian mayors in the U.S. Keechl is the 28th openly gay mayor in the United States, according to statistics from the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, a national political group. (The comparison isn’t exact, since many mayors are elected by all residents of the jurisdiction in question; in Broward County, Florida it rotates among county commissioners elected by district.) But he’ll be representing one of the largest populations of any openly gay officials in the country, said Denis Dison, the Victory Fund’s vice president of communications. “It is significant. Any time that an openly gay or lesbian person is in a political leadership role or any leadership role, it gives an opportunity for people to see them as normal human beings, people like themselves who are invested in things that the broader community cares about,” Dison said. “That is important because it kind of puts the lie to the notion that we are somehow ‘other.’ The other side, that people who in the anti-gay industry, they have a vested interest in keeping us ‘other’ and in keeping us on the outside of the mainstream, because then it allows them to talk about us in ways that other people may not challenge. “When you see someone like Ken who has been elected to office and is dedicating his time to everyone’s issues, not just his own, but the larger community’s interests, it really puts the lie to the notion that we are ‘other.’ And we are not. We are as concerned about education or potholes or the environment or crime. It affects us like it does everyone else,” Dison said. link_broward_countyDan Pinello, a political scientist who specializes in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender politics at the City University of New York and past chairman of the LGBT caucus of the American Political Science Association, said it wouldn’t be a big deal in New York or Massachusetts. “Especially in a state like Florida, … that’s progress where there’s a lot needed. So bravo,” Pinello said. “In places like Florida or Texas it is comparatively monumental. “Any public officeholder who is openly gay and is known as such, who has greater, increased visibility, it is an important event,” he said. And anytime one of those public officials can “demonstrate that they’re an effective public servant and that they’re not in any way different from their heterosexual counterparts is a win for the LGBT community. Hastings Wyman, founding editor of the Southern Political Report newsletter, also said Keechl’s new role is significant. “I think it’s a big deal. It’s one more step in growing acceptance of gay people in public life. Also history shows that when people begin to work with gay public officials they find a much greater willingness to listen to them on gay issues,” he said. Florida doesn’t have many openly gay public officials. The Victory Fund counts 21 in the Sunshine State, including four county commissioners and seven judges. The state has never had an openly gay member of the Legislature. Until that happens, Dison said, “we won’t have significant change in Florida. To do that, you do have to build the bench so to speak. To do that it’s on city councils and county commissions, and it’s people like Ken.” “It’s slow all over the South,” Wyman said, though many other Southern states have elected gay or lesbian legislators. “A lot of it has to do with the makeup of the districts. You have to have a certain base there with gay votes and sophisticated voters. It’ll happen in Florida.” Even though he’s on the other side politically from Democrat Keechl, Benjamin Lewis, president of Broward’s largely gay Sunshine Republicans, said it’s good to have openly gay people serve prominently. “I’d like to see more openly gay Republicans. But I welcome anyone from our community to be actively involved in all politics,” he said. “It really doesn’t make any difference to me as long as he’s an effective leader I don’t think his sexual orientation should come into play when it means a person’s ability to lead or anything like that. I think it’s completely their ability to manage and to lead the county as necessary. “Anybody within our community should respect the position that he’s entrusted to. If he does do a good job and everything I think he will become a role model for future people who want to become involved in our government.
