A group of porn actors who arrived on the arm of entertainer Connie Francis earlier this month to help Fort Lauderdale promote an upcoming beach party were not hired for the occasion by the city, Mayor Jack Seiler said.
The four models, working for a Fort Lauderdale-based talent agency (FabScout.com), attended the press conference as escorts for Francis, the singing actress who first came to Fort Lauderdale to film Where the Boys Are, a 1960 movie about college students on Spring Break. Francis and her hit song of the same name have become iconic touchstones for the gay community.
The Memorial Day weekend festival, to be called "Connie Francis' Great American Beach Party," will commemorate the movie's 50th anniversary in an event that Seiler said would consist of "good old-fashioned family fun."
Seiler said the city was not involved in selecting the models and no taxpayer money was spent on the press conference.
"We didn't have anything to do with her entourage," Seiler said Monday.
John McLaughlin, a spokesman for Francis, said he organized the press conference and sought out models for the event through "Hot Spots," a publication that serves South Florida's gay community.
"Hot Spots" publisher Peter Clark said he called Howard Marr of FabScout, a Fort Lauderdale-based talent agency that sent the four models to the event.
Gay Porn Actors Show Up To Promote Fort Lauderdale 'family fun' Event with Connie Francis

"We contacted Howard and asked for anyone," he said. "I don't care about their backgrounds and I didn't specifically ask for anyone of any notoriety."
Marr said, "All four guys are gay porn actors," and declined to comment further.McLaughlin and Seiler both said they were not aware that the models had appeared in gay porn films. But Seiler said he avoided having his picture taken with the men after a city staffer alerted him. The mayor said he knew Francis was going to arrive with a bunch of guys, but, "We thought they were going to be in their 60s." Francis, in an interview on Tuesday, said she found out about her escorts' adult-film resumes almost as soon as she met them in their bathing trunks at the Bahia Mar resort hotel, shortly before the press conference. After the introductions, Francis said her hairdresser — who recognized the models — pulled her aside and said, "These four guys are porno stars." She kept that information to herself and didn't even tell McLaughlin, her publicist and the press conference's organizer, "because for me it wasn't that important," she said. Francis said she would not have chosen adult-movie performers for the occasion but added, "I can't hurt their feelings … Everybody's gotta earn a living." She counted herself as amused by the episode. "It's a funny story … Nothing ever happens normally in my life," she said. Story: Palm Beach Post News

Gianni Versace was murdered in 1997. I really view that as a turning point. Within a couple years, South Beach was changing. And not in a good way. I was last there in 2004 for the famous Winter Party, which attracts several thousand gay people. Even with that many gays in town, my partner and I DID NOT feel safe walking the streets at night. Straight kids in cars drove past and yelled "faggots" at us and one car even hurled a bottle at us. We walked in somewhere for a slice of pizza late night and straight teenagers mumbled "gay this" and "fag that" under their breath, but loud enough to hear. We were told by locals at that time, that many gays are starting to relocate to Fort Lauderdale. I have not been back to South Beach since.
It has just gotten worse in the last 5 years as the area has become a late night drinking straight town. This month in the news, gay bashings are on the rise there. State of Florida records stated that 75% of the anti-homosexual hate crimes in Miami-Dade County in 2009 occurred in South Beach/Miami Beach. It's still chic and expensive there. Major developers have invested billions there. But the gays are getting out.
"South Beach isn't the free-spirited haven of gayness it once was." says writer Natalie O'Neill from Miami New Times.
Tony Lopez was celebrating the White Party this past November. Another huge gay event which brings thousands into the town. It was 4am and he wandered into a popular place for some take-out food. As he approached the line for food, an aggressive 20-something staggered up to him.
"Got a cigarette?" he asked. Tony shook a Marlboro Mild from the pack and handed him one.
Right then, a gang — Tony remembers four men — "appeared out of the woodwork." They shoved him into the alley behind the restaurant, yelled "Fucking faggot!" and began to punch him. He fell to the ground and tried to shield his head as they kicked him in the face.
O'Neill reports, "In a five-year span, the State Attorney's Office reported 26 incidents, half of which were in Miami Beach. Victims include a lounge singer who was stripped naked and hogtied and a magazine publisher who was viciously beaten.
It's surprising when you consider South Beach's heyday as a sparkling gay playground, where oiled-up boys frolicked between wild foam parties and the hub of hedonism that was the Versace mansion. Nobody thought twice about casual sex in Flamingo Park or flamboyant public fashion shoots, and — at its peak — MTV was even there to glamorize it all." - which really became the downfall of South Beach. It was a "kept secret" for a while but once it became celebritized by the rich and famous and sensationalized by television and film, it was no longer a secret!
I am not saying don't go to South Beach. There are still fun clubs and fun parties there.
But YOU MUST BE CAREFUL. Walk in groups and not alone. Especially at night, when most of the trouble starts.
Gay Fort Lauderdale has been a haven for gay and lesbian travelers for decades. But in the last 5 years, it has seen tremendous growth as South Beach shifted. In addition to being a very gay friendly city , Fort Lauderdale has more than 100 gay-owned establishments including hotels/guesthouses, bars, clubs and restaurants, plus the second largest Metropolitan Community Church congregation in the United States and three gay and lesbian publications. Gay Ft. Lauderdale has three popular gay beach areas on Fort Lauderdale's 23 miles of wide, sandy beach.
Fort Lauderdale continues to reign supreme as one of the most popular gay destinations in North America.

A changing of the guard took place this afternoon for Broward County, Florida as a new Mayor took the Oath of Office. Ken Keechl got his turn as Broward mayor, becoming the first openly gay person in that spot and join an elite group as one of a relatively small number of openly gay or lesbian mayors in the U.S.
Keechl is the 28th openly gay mayor in the United States, according to statistics from the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, a national political group. (The comparison isn’t exact, since many mayors are elected by all residents of the jurisdiction in question; in Broward County, Florida it rotates among county commissioners elected by district.)
But he’ll be representing one of the largest populations of any openly gay officials in the country, said Denis Dison, the Victory Fund’s vice president of communications.
“It is significant. Any time that an openly gay or lesbian person is in a political leadership role or any leadership role, it gives an opportunity for people to see them as normal human beings, people like themselves who are invested in things that the broader community cares about,” Dison said.
“That is important because it kind of puts the lie to the notion that we are somehow ‘other.’ The other side, that people who in the anti-gay industry, they have a vested interest in keeping us ‘other’ and in keeping us on the outside of the mainstream, because then it allows them to talk about us in ways that other people may not challenge.
“When you see someone like Ken who has been elected to office and is dedicating his time to everyone’s issues, not just his own, but the larger community’s interests, it really puts the lie to the notion that we are ‘other.’ And we are not. We are as concerned about education or potholes or the environment or crime. It affects us like it does everyone else,” Dison said.
Dan Pinello, a political scientist who specializes in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender politics at the City University of New York and past chairman of the LGBT caucus of the American Political Science Association, said it wouldn’t be a big deal in New York or Massachusetts.
“Especially in a state like Florida, … that’s progress where there’s a lot needed. So bravo,” Pinello said. “In places like Florida or Texas it is comparatively monumental.
“Any public officeholder who is openly gay and is known as such, who has greater, increased visibility, it is an important event,” he said. And anytime one of those public officials can “demonstrate that they’re an effective public servant and that they’re not in any way different from their heterosexual counterparts is a win for the LGBT community.
Hastings Wyman, founding editor of the Southern Political Report newsletter, also said Keechl’s new role is significant.
“I think it’s a big deal. It’s one more step in growing acceptance of gay people in public life. Also history shows that when people begin to work with gay public officials they find a much greater willingness to listen to them on gay issues,” he said.
Florida doesn’t have many openly gay public officials. The Victory Fund counts 21 in the Sunshine State, including four county commissioners and seven judges.
The state has never had an openly gay member of the Legislature. Until that happens, Dison said, “we won’t have significant change in Florida. To do that, you do have to build the bench so to speak. To do that it’s on city councils and county commissions, and it’s people like Ken.”
“It’s slow all over the South,” Wyman said, though many other Southern states have elected gay or lesbian legislators. “A lot of it has to do with the makeup of the districts. You have to have a certain base there with gay votes and sophisticated voters. It’ll happen in Florida.”
Even though he’s on the other side politically from Democrat Keechl, Benjamin Lewis, president of Broward’s largely gay Sunshine Republicans, said it’s good to have openly gay people serve prominently.
“I’d like to see more openly gay Republicans. But I welcome anyone from our community to be actively involved in all politics,” he said.
“It really doesn’t make any difference to me as long as he’s an effective leader I don’t think his sexual orientation should come into play when it means a person’s ability to lead or anything like that. I think it’s completely their ability to manage and to lead the county as necessary.
“Anybody within our community should respect the position that he’s entrusted to. If he does do a good job and everything I think he will become a role model for future people who want to become involved in our government.

The City of Wilton Manors is considering a plan to build an all-male luxury hotel, gay weekly South Florida Blade reported. The 172-unit hotel and timeshare complex is being developed by G-Resorts, which is touting the facility as a “luxury destination for the gay community.”
Wilton Manors, the “Island City,” is neighbored by gay mecca Fort Lauderdale. Plans for the hotel include a spa, wellness and fitness center, private sunbathing area, swimming pool, hot tubs, secluded nature trail and a lazy river lagoon on a 6 acre property.
The facility – estimated to be worth $50-100 million – would also boast up to 19,000 square feet of retail space. Developer Michael Haley of Long Island, New York is also behind Dolce Vita, a 35-unit oceanfront condominium resort on Singer Island.

Members of the city's Planning and Zoning Board have raised concerns with the hotel, including its height, mitigating its environmental impact and funding
The City of Wilton Manors is approximately two square miles in area and is located in Broward County, Florida, just north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Wilton Manors is often referred to as the “Island City” because its boundaries primarily follow the North and South Forks of the Middle River. Ideally located within minutes of the beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors is quickly becoming the “place to be” in South Florida.

The Miami Herald reported that Deputy Jonathan Bleiweiss, 29, the employee of the year for the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s Oakland Park District, was arrested “on 14 charges, including sexual battery, false imprisonment and stalking in connection with abusing one of the victims, a 30-year-old male.”
The police are investigating the potential sexual abuse of 7 other men. The Herald reported: “They are undocumented immigrants, mostly from El Salvador and Mexico, who speak little English.”
Bleiweiss had been heralded for being an openly gay cop. Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said: ”I can’t think of a worse betrayal of public trust. The fact is, he preyed on one of our most vulnerable communities.”
I guess this is equality because it shows that gay men can be just as creepy as straight men.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel also had a report (WARNING: Spooky Spooky content) Arrest affidavit for BSO deputy Jonathan Bleiweiss

Police in Ft Lauderdale have confirmed that two men have been arrested for the brutal beatings and robberies of two gay men last month; the attacks were so vicious that one man remains in a coma. Pargu Leandro (left) and Victor Gonzalez (right) have been charged in the beatings and robberies of two men in Oakland Park, FL. Sheriff's investigators say Craig Cohen, 47, (pictured below) was walking from the Peter Pan Diner on Oakland Park Boulevard to his home a few blocks away when he was attacked. Cohen, who was robbed and brutally beaten, has not regained consciousness.
A close friend of the victim has made a statement to a local television reporter that if Cohen does survive he will be on a ventilator for the rest of his life, and that the front lobe of his brain is dead," said Cohen's friend Arthur Arndt. David Villanova, 27, from Pompano Beach was also attacked after a night out in Wilton Manors. He told police he was walking to a nearby 7-11 in the 1500 block of Northeast Fourth Avenue when he was jumped him from behind.

After checking on his story, Ft. Lauderdale police think Villanova's attack happened closer to where Cohen was attacked. A witness to Villanova's attack helped a police artist to create a sketch of one of the attackers. Investigators say these cases may be linked. In both cases, detectives believe the victims were jumped by four guys. And In each case the men were robbed. One other common thread: both victims are gay."He said that he was walking, he was struck in the back of the head was the initial blow," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Kathy Collins. "He went down. He believes a total of 4 guys beat on him."
