Grand Opening Of Google's North Carolina Data Center

Google has invited our Network President, M.A. Wilson to a celebration Wednesday.
The event began with a ribbon cutting for all invited guests, followed by a public celebration lasting until 7 p.m.
The festivities - featuring live music by
Cold Fire, local North Carolina BBQ, activities for the kids and other surprises - took place at the data center site, located at 708 Lynhaven Drive, Lenoir.
The ribbon cutting at the main entrance to the Google site included comments from local and state officials, along with Google representatives.
Following the ceremonies, a community barbecue began at 4 p.m., with activities continuing during the next three hours.
Google began construction of the data center in January 2007 on more than 200 acres of land in Lenoir.
When it's completed, the center is expected to serve as a major routing point for Internet information and applications requests along the east coast of the United States.
Google has said it intends to invest as much as $600 million and create as many as 200 jobs at the Lenoir site.
At the 220-acre Google site, past, present and future coexist. More than 300 construction workers, many from local contractors, have transformed a hill into more of a mountain, moving vast quantities of earth. The surrounding neighborhood, meanwhile, looks much as it did before, with a mix of modest homes and largely shuttered furniture factories. The Blue Ridge Mountains and snow-capped top of Grandfather Mountain loom in the distance.
The first data center has risen at the base of the hill, along N.C. 18, with large cooling units at the side. It's on track to begin limited testing this spring and should be fully up and running by the end of the year ... Google is also excavating the pad for the second building, which is expected to begin operating in 2009.
