Happy Star Wars Day

The Los Angeles City Council declared May 25, 2007 as Star Wars Day, in honor of the May 25, 1977 release date of the first Star Wars movie
The film wasn't supposed to do what it did—nothing was supposed to do that. Movies were meant to stay on the screen, flat and large and colorful, gathering you up into their sweep of story and releasing you back into your life at the other end. But this movie misbehaved. Star Wars leaked out of the theater, poured off the screen. A lot of people were affected deeply by it, requiring talismans and artifacts, merchandising and sequels. On May 25, 1977 there was was a line-around-the-block sensation at Mann's Theatre in L.A. (Photo: LucasFilms LTD)
WWMD? - A REASON FOR US TO CELEBRATE EQUALITY: Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
An American clergyman, activist & prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement; Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin was born on January 15, 1929.
January 15th marks the 81st birthday of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. In the 41 years since Dr. King's assassin, many of us -- some who were around for the civil rights marches and anti-war demonstrations, others who study history -- often wonder, what would King be doing if he were alive today? What issues would he be championing? What campaigns would he be leading? To put it in 21st century lingo, WWMD -- What Would Martin Do?
His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the USA & he’s become a human rights icon: MLK is recognized as a martyr by 2 Christian churches. A Baptist minister, MLK became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott & helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its 1st president.
MLK's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where He delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement & established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.
In 1964, MLK became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation & racial discrimination thru civil disobedience & other non-violent means. By the time of his death, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty & opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 & Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.
Every One Is Equal : Period! If I can help somebody as I pass along, If I can cheer somebody w/ a word or song, If I can show somebody he's traveling wrong, Then my living will not be in vain. If I can do my duty as a Christian ought, If I can bring salvation to a world once wrought, If I can spread the message as the master taught, Then my living will not be in vain.
* Excerpted from MLK's Historic "Drum Major Instinct Speech" delivered @ Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, on February 4, 1968.
There are opposing views even w/in the King family — regarding the slain civil rights leader's religious & political views about LGBT people. King's widow Coretta said publicly that she believed her husband would have supported gay rights. However, his daughter Bernice believed he would have been opposed to gay marriage. The King Center includes discrimination, & lists homophobia as one of its examples, in its list of "The Triple Evils" that should be opposed. In 1980, the Department of Interior designated King's boyhood home in Atlanta & several nearby buildings the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. In 1996, United States Congress authorized the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity to establish a foundation to manage fund raising & design of a Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC. MLK was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the 1st intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established by & for African Americans. MLK was the 1st African American honored w/ his own memorial in the National Mall area & the 1st non-President to be commemorated in such a way. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986.Hurry Up And Get You Sum: Pierre Fitch's Cyber Monday Special Offer!

Updated: Today Is National Coming Out Day
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today celebrates National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11) – an annual celebration that encourages LGBT people and their supporters to live open and honest lives. Centered on the theme “Conversations from the Heart,” the campaign features videos of LGBT individuals and supportive people in their lives as well as a new Facebook application that allows users to “donate” their status leading up to Oct. 11, share the campaign with friends, create a personalized t-shirt and find coming out resources.
“The more we as LGBT people tell our stories and engage the straight people in our lives, the closer we are to achieving equality,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “‘Conversations from the Heart’ encourages every American – no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation – to become empowered and active in the fight to ensure equal rights for all people.”
The centerpiece of the campaign is a series of videos (www.hrc.org/ComingOutDay) in which LGBT people along with straight supporters share how the experience of having open and honest conversations has changed their lives for the better. Featured are: two straight ministers and a gay congregant; a mother and her gay son; a teacher and a student with a gay father; a gay and a straight veteran; a family with a transgender parent; and a rabbi and a gay congregant. Additionally, the Huffington Post published an op-ed today by HRC President Joe Solmonese for National Coming Out Day: www.huffingtonpost.com/joe-solmonese/hearts-and-minds-dont-cha_b_306260.html.
With the new Facebook application (apps.facebook.com/equalityconversation/about.php) users can pledge to continue the conversation and “donate their status” so friends and family can become engaged as well. The application also facilitates spreading the word on Twitter and via e-mail.

Our community contributes $700 billion a year to this economy, yet we are not given equal protections under the law that every citizen deserves. As such, it is time we make a stand. We are calling for a nationwide strike and economic boycott by all members of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community AND OUR STRAIGHT ALLIES on December 10th, 2008, International Human Rights Day.

Call in "gay" on December 10th and instead volunteer for your local LGBT and/or human rights organizations.
Search or Post Volunteer Opportunities in Your Area NOW!
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
STRIKE: call in gay, shut down your business, or just take the day off.
BOYCOTT: don't buy anything, spend money or support the economy.
PARTICIPATE: Volunteer and/or organize a protest in your area.
TEN TIPS ABOUT WHAT TO DO ON DECEMBER 10:
-Wake up for work on Wednesday December 10th... and call in GAY.
-Go to the bank and take $80 out of your account... put it in your pocket and KEEP IT THERE.
-Do not go get your morning latte
-Do not purchase anything
-Do not contribute to advertising revenue: Meaning, spend 24 hours of your life without TV & Internet
-Do not use your cell phone, even if you have unlimited minutes.
-Instead, DO volunteer. Give to the community and reach out to those that don't understand our community. Check your state page for local volunteer opportunities.
-If you must spend, only do so at an LGBTQ owned establishment with an LGBTQ clientel.
-You have a week to prepare, so go grocery shopping now.
-Volunteering gives us something meaningful to do on our day away from work AND it provides an automatic opportunity for outreach into communities that primarily get media images of the LGBTQ community and our allies, without having to say a word. This is a simple way of putting our smiling, loving faces in places that usually don't see our community.
FIND OR ADD A VOLUNTEER LOCATION HERE
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Anyone who wants to make an impact and drive a message to our government that WE DESERVE CIVIL EQUALITY. This means the LGBTQ community and it also means our amazing allies!
WHY THE NAME "A DAY WITHOUT GAYS"?
The name was inspired by the film A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN and the nationwide strike in 2006 called A DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS that protested against proposed immigration laws.
WHY STRIKE NOW DURING AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN?
While one day won't destroy the economy, it will send a clear signal that we are serious about getting our rights. Also, strikes and boycotts are more effective in an economic downturn because business owners have more to lose.
WHY A STRIKE AND A BOYCOTT?
General strikes and economic boycotts have been a powerful form of non-violent protest in the history of civil rights movements, from the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the anti-apartheid boycotts in the 1980s. For many of those protesters, their actions came at a great sacrifice but they were willing to risk everything to obtain their rights.
WHAT IF I CAN'T MISS WORK?
That's OK. It's important to note that many states still do not have anti-discrimination laws on the books with regards to employment discrimination against sexual orientation. If you are afraid to miss work, if your pocket book can't handle it, or if you work for a great LGBTQ advocate and friend, then go to work. All we ask is that you PACK YOUR LUNCH. It's that simple. This boycott helps to increase our visibility if we don't go to work, but you can participate in the economic boycott by simply not consuming.
Please help us get the word out and help us call all of the local volunteer organizations to ask them how we can help on December 10th.

With all the uncertainties in today's economy, it's important to make sure every dollar you spend reflects your values. This year's guide includes 260 companies that received a perfect score – businesses that have truly earned the right to call you a customer.
And be sure to check out our "Red" section, as well. The 72 businesses listed there have failed to support LGBT equality or have declined to respond to HRC's Corporate Equality Index survey.
