The drag queens and sports minded tended to that area. Brent performed on the main stage in the main dance room. In front of the main stage (with the shower,) the seating area was divided into 4 square sections, each with it’s own small square dance platform. Between the main performances, nearly naked dancers, performed for the tips of the people at each of these four squares. Honoring Seaman Provost

August Provost, a sailor from Houston, was found shot in a guard booth on the base early Tuesday, June 30th. The murderer also tried to set the booth on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence. Military officials are holding a suspect in the brig at Miramar while they investigate. A candlelight vigil is being planned to honor August Provost, the gay sailor who was murdered at Camp Pendleton last week. The vigil will take place in front of Camp Pendleton this Friday, July 10 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. The tragedy of Provost's death has gained wide attention from the gay community. Provost was gay and was out to many of his fellow servicemembers. He had also complained to his sister, Akalia, that he had been recently harassed in regards to his sexuality. Provost's family encouraged him to report the harassment to superiors, but that was probably not an option. Under the military's discriminatory Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, Provost could have been discharged if he acknowledged his sexuality to his superiors. Despite this, military officials have stated that there is nothing in the case to suggest the murder was a hate crime. They have also said that terrorism and gang violence were not motives. No reason for the murder has been released yet, leaving many people to wonder what really happened the night Provost was murdered. Nicole Murray-Ramirez, chairman of San Diego's Human Rights Commission, is asking for an inquiry into whether Provost was killed because of his sexual orientation.

"We respect the military, but we want to ensure that there is full disclosure, to see if this was a hate crime," Murray-Ramirez said. "A member of our community has been killed."

Gay Chat Room Murder

A traffic stop in a small southwest Georgia town last week led to an arrest in the slaying of a 19-year-old man, bringing to an end an investigation of a relationship that started in a gay chat room. Lee Carl Banks III, also 19, is on his way back to Katy, Texas after an astute Grady County sheriff’s deputy stopped Banks on March 30 as he was driving the damaged Mitsubishi Eclipse of Spenser Vogt (photo) in Cairo, Ga. Vogt was later found dead in Texas, shot twice in the head and his body wrapped in a tarp and dumped. Police say the two men, who knew each other for less than a week prior to the killing, initially met in a gay chatroom. Banks was stopped early in the morning of March 30. As sheriff’s deputies questioned him, they later searched the car and found a .38-caliber handgun inside. Two days later, a Texas Ranger and a homicide detective were in Cairo to interview Banks, who then said the shooting was accidental.

[Sheriff’s Investigator Steve] Clark says Banks told the Texas officers he had met Vogt in an Internet chat room about a week before his disappearance, and the two had been out together the evening of Friday, Mar. 27. That night the couple went to Banks’ apartment, where Banks claims he accidentally shot Vogt in the head. Banks told the officers he then dumped the body in a ditch in southeast Houston. By Wednesday night, officers had found a body with multiple gunshot wounds to the head dumped and wrapped in a tarp in the area Banks described. Because the body had been there five days, authorities had to wait on a medical examiner’s report to positively identify it as Vogt.

On Monday, Banks appeared in a Grady County court, where he waived extradition. Authorities returned from Texas Tuesday to transport Banks back to the state. Coverage of the case in the Houston Chronicle has generated scores of comments.

That is so sad. Now is the killer really gay or just out searching for people to rob and kill? Death Penalty is in order and hopefully he’ll get it! Gay or not, this young man did not deserve this. I agree with SUEGAR who wrote “Was it really necessary to report that the two met in a gay chat room?” NO, it wasn’t. This was someone’s son.. I am sure they would give anything to have him back in their arms. Yes. It brings out all the anti-gay crowd to the boards. Now they can use this tragic event as ammunition to further their homophobic cause. Its the same reason they publish immigrant status, race, and religion to excite the opposite crowd. Have you ever noticed 300+ comments on an immigrant crime versus >20 on a regulat crime?

Bar Refuses 100 Gays

The Union Bar Lounge in midtown Houston, Texas refused to serve nearly 100 gay patrons, leaving them to wait in the rain while the bar was empty and heterosexuals were being ushered inside. Patrons started lining up at about 9:40 p.m Friday night. and were told to wait in line and not allowed inside, even as straight-appearing people were waved through. As the line grew and patrons waited in the rain, employees at the door told those who were that they were maintaining a “ratio.” Later, the bar employees simply indicated they had the right to refuse anyone.

“I was shocked to be a victim of that kind of discrimination in a city like Houston in 2009,” said Neal Falgoust, a Houston law student. “I have never experienced anything like that before in my life.”

A patron who arrived at the bar early reported that the bar was nearly empty at about  9:40 p.m. Friday night, when gay people started arriving and were stopped at the door. Gay people continued to line up to the street and around the corner as people who appeared to be straight went to the front and were ushered in. Kris Banks, who stood at the front of the line, said the bar employees were asking the women who were entering with men if the men were accompanying them. If the men were with the women, they were allowed in.

“I arrived and heard that they were not allowing gay men in, so when I got to the door with three women I asked if we would be allowed in, and the door employee said ‘I was told to keep you out,’ ” said Lindsey Dionne. “This was supposed to be a social event, but now it’s political.”

That this kind of discrimination is still legal in Houston makes it more outrageous. A coalition of GLBT rights groups, including the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, the Houston Stonewall Young Democrats, the Harris County Impact Houston and Amicus at South Texas College of Law said Saturday that the incident is proof of the necessity of legal protections for sexual orientation and gender identity for public accommodations.

“Houston is the only major city in Texas without a law that prevents this kind of discrimination,” said Jerry Simoneaux, GLBT civil rights lawyer. “This incident is exactly the reason Houston should implement such an ordinance.”

The event was organized as Houston’s first “Guerilla Gay Bar,” a tongue-in-cheek event that has been popular in other cities in which GLBT individuals come to traditionally straight bars to interact with other communities. Though Guerilla Gay Bars are usually a surprise event in other cities, Houston organizers informed the bar owner in advance out of courtesy and were told they would be welcomed (Capitol Annex). The bar’s owner said his establishment has always been gay friendly, and he’s willing to prove it. He said he plans to reach out to Houston’s gay community to clear up what he insists is just a misunderstanding The fact that the bar was told in advance that a large gay crowd was coming was not even necessary, since when does one need to RSVP to a bar? The bar said they would be welcome, and then decided to discriminate against them. People are already leaving negative reviews on their yelp page. Mason Wyler Raped

I had seen Mason's Myspace status updates the last few days having something to do with rape. I just thought it was another one of his sexual fantasy stories that he had written. Little did I know the sad truth behind those updates. I was doing my daily browsing of all the porn blogs this morning when I came across this story on my friend Dewayne's blog that was covering this. I started to read it and the post cited Mason's blog as the source. What I read there literally brought me to tears. The words and pictures on that page became too much for me to handle. I actually had to walk away for a minute before I could finish reading. Here is what happened as described by Mason in his blog:

The truth is I did get raped by a guy who claimed to be a Captain in the U.S. Army. And the truth is I did invite him into my home. He was attractive and he looked normal. I guess thats incredibly stupid of me to judge someones character based solely on appearances. But I trust people on day one until they lose it instead of making people earn my trust. We had a bit of small talk, he told me that he was gay, and that he had seen some of my work and kept up with my myspace page. In a joking manner he asked for his reward for finding my wallet and I did come on to him. I kissed him and he kissed me back. But within a few short moments things quickly turned ugly. All the sexual abuses that I listed in my faux news report truthfully happened to me.

Mason also printed that his attacker was arrested and he does plan to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. Mason took the first step in the right direction to getting justice by first reporting the crime. According to RAINN.ORG (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), when a rape is reported, there is a 50.8% chance of an arrest being made. If an arrest is made, there is an 80% chance that there will be prosecution. But out of those prosecutions, only 58% stand the chance of conviction. Out of those convictions, there is only a 69% chance that the accused will face any jail time. When you boil all the math down, out of the 64,080 rapes reported every year, there is only a 16.9% chance the accused will go to jail. I too have been a victim of a sexual assult. I was 14 years old when I was attacked by two seniors in my high school. I'm very fortunate that my attackers were convicted and are still in prison. My lawyers were able to not only convict them of rape, but also a hate crime. Imagine having to come out to your parents only because you were raped. But I wanted justice to be served. I can only hope the same for Mason.
