Italy's Top Court Rejects Gay Marriage

Italy's Constitutional Court on Wednesday rejected legal recognition of gay marriage, saying arguments in its favour were either "unfounded" or "inadmissible." Courts in Venice and Trento in the northeast sought the court's opinion after gay rights groups questioned whether the bar to same-sex marriage was a violation of human rights enshrined in the constitution. They also argued that the bar may flout European and international obligations, and that the constitution does not explicitly prohibit same-sex marriage. The Italian Forum of Family Associations hailed the ruling, saying the court had "chosen in favour of the good of society." But a group advocating gay marriage vowed to continue the struggle, "carrying it forward, both in the courts and in society, until the full equality of homosexuals is recognised in civil marriage law." The Constitutional Court will issue a detailed opinion in the coming days. Story AFP

2 Bombs Rattle the Gay Community in Rome

estate_violentaBASEA pair of bombs were hurled at a gay bar in Rome on Sept. 1, capping a series of violent actions taken against GLBTs in Rome’s capital city. According to a Sept. 2 article at ADN Kronos International, local media said that the bombers were on motorcycles. The target was a bar on Via San Giovanni, also known as Gay Street, in Rome’s gay district. One person was hospitalized. The article included a quote from Fabrizio Marrazzo, who heads up Italian GLBT equality group Arcigay. Said Marrazzo, "It all happened very quickly unleashing panic in the streets. "There were people screaming and running everywhere," Marrazzo added. Text at the Arcigay Web site declared, "If anyone would have been closer [to the explosions], someone would have lost their life," ADN Kronos International reported. romepride2CREDantmooseThe article noted that violence targeting gays and lesbians have spiked over the summer, with a lesbian being harassed on Aug. 26, also on Via San Giovanni. An attack also targeted two gay men, one of whom was stabbed. The article also noted that a gay night spot was the scene of an attempted arson. Also, an openly gay singer was assaulted. GLBT Web site Towleroad reported that hundreds of people gathered Sept. 2 to protest the bombings and other acts of violence targeting gays in the city. The article quoted the city’s mayor, Gianni Alemanno, as calling the incidents "extremely worrying," and said that Alemanno vowed to put more police on the streets in the gay district. The article also quoted Vladimir Luxuria, a former government official who is now a transgender activist, as warning that, "Rome isn’t a safe city for gays" and predicting that the attacks were the beginning of "a cycle of homophobic terrorism." Generally homophobic attitudes in Italy were cited as an underlying factor in a claim made recently by a soccer manager Marcello Lippi that he had never met a soccer player who was also a gay man. Lippi, who guided the Italian team to a World Cup victory, was given a prescription in an Aug. 29 Associated Press article to overcome his blindness to the presence of gays athletics: acquaint himself with Nuova Kaos, Milan’s amateur gay soccer team. The article noted that other teams are spurred to greater efforts on the field, lest they lose to the gay team, but Nuova Kaos plays hard, too, placing fourth last season out of the 16 teams in its league. The article quoted German teammate Klaus Heusslein, who expressed exasperation at the attitude of Italians when it comes to gay athletes. "Here, people think, ’They have to share the same changing room. Who knows what might happen if they have gays in the locker room? They might attack people,’" the article quoted Heusslein as saying. If the truth of the matter--that gays are the ones being attacked in the streets--were not so grim, Heusslein’s words might even seem ironic.

Hello Kitty

mafiabossItalian police have arrested a suspected mob capo said to have a taste for dressing as a woman. Investigators say that Ugo Gabriele prefers to use the name Kitty,  Gabriele was picked up with 27 other alleged members of the Camorra, the powerful mob in Naples. Gabriele, 27, allegedly ran a drug and prostitution operation for the Scissionisti clan.

Beefy Ugo Gabriele, 27, dyed his hair blonde, plucked his eyebrows and wore lipstick. He commanded a clan with dozens of gangsters, operating a drugs and prostitution racket. Armed cops seized him with 27 henchmen in Naples, Italy - home of the terrifying Camorra mob. Police said Gabriele wanted to be a woman, but it was not known whether he had surgery to change sex.

UPI and other Europe news reporting agencies report.  “He is very burly but at the same time you can tell he is trying to be a woman. “He was a key figure in the Camorra and ran a drugs and prostitution racket by the airport. Thanks to good police work, we found him.”

The Mafia is known for macho figures like Don Corleone, played by Marlon Brando in 1972 movie The Godfather. But Luigi Romolo Carrino, an expert on the Mob based in Italy, said: “There is a lot more homosexual activity than you think. It is very discreet.” John “Johnny Boy” D’Amato was gunned down in New York in 1992 for being gay.

Hitman Anthony Capo said: “Nobody’s gonna respect us if we have a gay boss discussing La Cosa Nostra business.”
