"In With The Old" - out with the twinks?

Who couldn't resist this adorable twinky boy pictured above? The fashion and model magazines are re-thinking their game plan this season - taking on a whole different look with more "manly trends" like model Doug Porter below.

The New York Times recently spoke with Jim Nelson, Editor of GQ Magazine who said,
"The twink thing seems over, when people open GQ, I don’t want them to feel like they’re looking at clothes on 16-year-olds.”
IN WITH THE OLD A boyish image is being overtaken by a more mature and rugged look. The model Chris Winter, left, has the boyish look favored recently, while Doug Porter reflects the new manly trend. Read More: New York Times: From Boys To Men

Who's Gay And Who's Not In Hollywood? Find Out! -

The National Enquirer thinks there are a lot of gay celebrities in Hollywood. Imagine that. And in their Jan 11, 2010 issue, they brazenly list who is and who isn't, based on some very scientific evidence. Slow news week, guys? Just bored because you couldn't find Tiger Woods? Their 2010 list includes male stars who have nice hair, wear fashionable clothes or who have played a gay character on film and/or TV or who have gay friends or have even posed with a gay person in a photo. It also includes female celebs for pretty much the same things, except for the nice hair and fashionable clothing bit. Why does the Enquirer think we care who's gay and who's not?  And why did they chicken out and leave out A-list stars rumored to be gay? Is it because those stars have A-list lawyers?

Interview Magazine's 20 Most Gorgeous People (Men) Of The Decade

One of the great things about magazines (and blogs) is the hauteur of lists. The last week of any year will find everyone scrambling to put together their list of significant events, people, deaths, and stories. Interview magazine, which was started in 1969 by Andy Warhol and Gerald Melanga has always been dedicated to celebrity. So it is no surprise that that the magazine doesn’t just make the claim for the year, BUT THE LAST DECADE! It would seem so subjective, but that is what an opinion is—so who is the sexiest person the last decade? Looking like a child with some Tyrone Power DNA, it is Zac Efron. Others include Chance Crawford, Ashley Greene, Colin Farrell, Kate Moss, Ryan Phillippe and a bevy of other young beauties. The beauty of lists is that undoubtedly someone will disagree, that said, the Interview list does seem hell-bent on youth, which assuredly is no guarantee of being gorgeous.

Martha’s Stewart's Magazine Features Gay Couple's Marriage

Bloggers Jeremy Hooper and Andrew Shulman tied the knot in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut on June 13 this year, and received a full page dedicated to their nuptials in Martha Stewart Wedding’s 15th anniversary Winter 2010 edition -- the first gay couple to ever have been featured in Weddings. "We’re humbled and honored to have been deemed ’good thing’-y enough to grace this mass market mag’s pages," the couple wrote on their Web site, www.goodasyou.com. "It’s one time you won’t hear us complain about our love being turned into an issue." Not once in the short description of the ceremony and reception, nor in the captions accompanying six beautiful snapshots, does the magazine mention the obvious: Hooper and Shulman are gay. The focus, instead, is on their menu choices and themed tables. The couple’s wedding stood out because of their use of recycled found objects in their décor, and not because of their sexuality.

Mark’s List Bought And Will Re-Launch 411 Magazine

marks_listA popular South Florida gay website announced Monday it will launch a companion weekly magazine and biweekly newspaper following the sudden closure Sunday of the nation's largest gay newspaper group. Multimedia Platforms of Oakland Park, which co-owns South Florida-based Mark's List, a gay website with about 5,000 unique visitors daily, next week will launch Mark's List Magazine, a Florida bar and entertainment guide. A newspaper, still unnamed, will begin Nov. 26, said Bobby Blair, managing partner and founder of Multimedia Platforms. "Our focus for the future, and the importance of this transaction, is owning the No. 1 LGBT website," Blair said. "It will certainly sustain our print operation and also will grow." Washington, D.C.-based Window Media and sister company Unite Media on Sunday announced plans to file for bankruptcy, immediately shutting down its papers and magazines in Wilton Manors, Houston, Atlanta and Washington. Last year, the U.S. Small Business Administration took control of Window Media/Unite Media's majority stockholder, financially troubled New York-based Avalon Equity Partners. Blair's group had been negotiating since September with Avalon Equity to purchase the company's South Florida properties, The South Florida Blade newspaper and 411 magazine, a bar guide. The Blade printed 8,500 copies a week; 411 printed 12,500, according to Blair. letter Multimedia Platforms put $250,000 in escrow with Wilton Manors attorney Dean Trantalis. Blair and his partners had planned to buy The Blade and 411 for $175,000 and invest the rest in the business, he said. Window Media/Unite Media decided to filed for bankruptcy after its owners decided to stop putting money in the company, Blair said. That's when Multimedia Platforms decided "we don't need them anymore," said Mark Haines, founder of Mark's List, who recently sold half his company to Blair's group. Multimedia Platforms quickly decided to take the money held in escrow and use it to start a new newspaper and magazine, Haines said. First order of business: hire all the displaced workers at The Blade and 411. "We have everything we need," Haines said. "We have all the contacts, telephone numbers, everything we need to go forward." When the newspaper launches, it will emphasize feature stories rather than hard news. "We're going to make sure it becomes more topical, more lifestyle oriented and more specific to South Florida. A real estate section, movie reviews, restaurant reviews," Blair said. The Blade, a money loser, is history. A final issue of profitable 411 -- already completed before Window Media/Unite Media locked out its workers -- will hit the newsstands Thursday, he said. South Florida's gay media market has been in flux for a decade. South Florida's oldest gay newspaper, TWN (The Weekly News), ran out of money and shut down after 29 years in March 2006. In 2003, Broward attorney Norm Kent sold his 3-year-old, Broward-based Express Gay News to Window Media/Unite Media, which renamed it The South Florida Blade. Blair believes that despite universal troubles in the media world, his group can make a success of the expanded Mark's List brand. "You have a tremendous amount of LGBT-friendly businesses who would love to reach out to the powerful LGBT buying power," Blair said. "That will bode well for growth. They will want to place ads in our publication."

The Advocate Now Becomes A Small Insert Inside Out Magazine

advocateGay media leader The Advocate will be trimmed down from a standalone magazine to an insert, insiders report.

The Advocate quickly evolved from a newsletter titled The Los Angeles Advocate in 1967 to the nation's only publication dedicated to gay news and politics by the mid-70s. It remains the only gay glossy available on newsstands nationwide.

Its former owner, PlanetOut, shored up the magazine with related businesses, including industry-leading LGBT websites Gay.com and PlanetOut.com and other gay-oriented publications such as gay-glam monthly Out.

But one decision, which followed a receding publishing market, continues to haunt the gay media empire.

In 2006, PlanetOut made the devastating decision to purchase gay cruise line RSVP. Less than a year later, the company chalked up its loses and sold RSVP to Atlantis Events, Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

outYet, the company could not regain its footing. By 2009, after selling several more properties, PlanetOut agreed to be bundled into Here Media, Inc. and relinquish control of the company as it faced possible NASDAQ delisting.

The move gave CEO Paul Colichman a gay media empire for a song. Colichman controls all-gay cabler here! and the gay-friendly movie studio Regent Releasing, as well.

But turning around a gay icon amid a recession that has hit publishers harder than most businesses has turned out to be easier said than done. Last week, gay blog Queerty.com reported the magazine faced another round of staff cuts, which included managing editor John Jameson, a 15-year veteran.

And The Advocate will be trimmed down from a standalone magazine to a 32-page insert bundled inside Out

Freshmen - Men Magazine SuperSizes

freshmenmagazineOur favorite magazines, Freshmen and Men are getting a complete make-over and a ton more of content and features to boot. My dearest colleague and editor extraordinaire of Unzipped Media, informed me today that the magazines are moving into special editions and will publish individual - double-sized special editions with a distribution and press 4 times a year as opposed to the rather short monthly issues we have gotten forever. In addition the entire website is getting a new design and will sure to be the hottest of it's kind on the net. Sounds like an awesome plan I think and I can't wait to get my jumbo sized rags. Their final monthly editions will carry a November 2009 cover date. Starting in December, all current subscriptions will be folded into affiliated publication Unzipped. By the way the October issue just got released online and the printed version should be in your mail box soon. This month it features that sexy Gavin Tate and some really hot spreads you gotta see.

Brad Pitt Talks About Sexy Secrets & Gay Marriage

bradpittgamarriageBrad Pitt recently opened up one of his secrets to keeping the romance alive with partner Angelina Jolie- and it's straight out of Hugh Hefner's playbook! "[It's] a great place for sex," Pitt told Parade about the secret stone grotto behind the waterfall in his pool. Pitt got a little more serious when the topic turned to marriage, reiterating his stand that he would not walk down the aisle until everyone had the legal right to.
"I have love in my life, a soul mate absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don't get married, I replied, Maybe we'll get married when it's legal for everyone else." I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying ithate mail from religious groups," Pitt revealed. "I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I've had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment."
Just in case there was still any doubt on his stand on gay marriage, Pitt happily embraced the idea of any of his own children being homosexual.
"Would it bother me if a child of mine turns out to be gay? No, not one bit. Listen, I want my kids to live the lives they want to live. I want them to be fulfilled. I hope I teach my kids to be who they really are."
