Demographic information showed most of the gay couples were older and better educated than average newlywed couples, with more than 74% over 35 years old and 69 % holding a college degree. Peru has announced that it will ban homosexuals from the police force for damaging the image of the institution. The law is one of several new regulations put forward by the Interior Minister, Mercedes Cabanillas. Ms Cabanillas is trying to shake up the institution, which has a dismal reputation among the general public. But critics say some of the new laws, especially those regarding sexual orientation or activity, are unconstitutional. The law states that any police officer who has sexual relations with someone of the same gender will be indefinitely suspended from the police force. The same applies to officers who have extra-marital relations - their actions are also deemed to cause scandal and denigrate the institution's image. They are among a raft of new regulations, which also include provision for sacking police officers who accept bribes, organise or take part in strikes and protest marches. Ms Cabanillas' strong-arm tactics have earned her some public backing and the nickname "Thatcher" in the Peruvian media, after the former Conservative British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Traditional machismo means openly homosexual police men are extremely scarce, but gay rights activists are growing in strength and this new law will provoke a debate. whitepartymainEvery Easter weekend for the last 20 years, gay men have stormed to Palm Springs for Jeffrey Sanker's White Party. Set to celebrate its 20th anniversary next weekend, it's equal parts dance, pool, costume and networking extravaganza and has grown from a smallish spring bash on the outskirts of acceptability to a mainstream party that attracts nearly 30,000 revelers.
"There have been challenging years," says Sanker in an interview with the LA Times, now one of the gay community's most visible night life and entertainment producers. "Years ago, there was a right-wing Republican mayor who didn't want gay people in the city, and his daughter protested against us at the convention center. Now I'm receiving the key to the city and a proclamation from the mayor."
Sanker moved to Los Angeles from New York City in 1987, after working at now classic clubs including Studio 54, the Limelight and the Palladium. He visited Palm Springs a year later and fell in love with it.

"The weekend started as a getaway for all my friends," he says. "It was to celebrate the rites of spring. That's why it's the White Party, because everybody looks good in white." The first White Party drew 500 people and was held at the Marquis, "the only hotel at the time that was open to hosting a gay event," says Sanker.
He considers 1992 a tipping point. "We took rooms at the Hilton and the Wyndham, and it started to become more mainstream." In 1991, then-Mayor Sonny Bono was cracking down on spring break. "That's when the gay community really moved in," says Sanker. "They liked us. We're generally an affluent group, we shop and eat in nice restaurants, so we beat out spring break."

The White Party is one of the biggest parties of its kind in the U.S., Sanker says, and it has come to attract an impressive roster of performers.

This year's headliner is nouveau house-in-hot-pants singer Lady GaGa, who just last year performed as the third act at the pool party, during the day, which Sanker says is "about as low on the totem pole as you can get." Hers is the "fastest rise for any performer that I've ever seen," says Sanker.

Does Sanker think the sour economy will keep the party down this year? Not at all. "People still want to have fun. Instead of two people to a room, there are four. They carpool, and there's a layaway ticket that a lot of people are taking advantage of," he says.

This year's theme is superheroes. "We want to keep appealing to the twentysomething crowd who likes dress-up parties," says Sanker. "Things change since you're 22," he adds, putting on his glasses to read from a mayoral proclamation that designates next weekend as the "White Party 20th Anniversary Commemoration Weekend" and concludes, "in grateful appreciation of the work accomplished on behalf of the tens of thousands of gay tourists from around the world who arrive in our diverse community of Palm Springs, California."

Study Finds AIDS Virus Is a Century Old

A Genetic Analysis of Two Old Strains Pushed Back the Estimated Origin of HIV to 1908

NEW YORK (AP) - The AIDS virus has been circulating among people for about 100 years, decades longer than scientists had thought, a new study suggests. Genetic analysis pushes the estimated origin of HIV back to between 1884 and 1924, with a more focused estimate at 1908. Previously, scientists had estimated the origin at around 1930. AIDS wasn't recognized formally until 1981 when it got the attention of public health officials in the United States. The new result is "not a monumental shift, but it means the virus was circulating under our radar even longer than we knew," says Michael Worobey of the University of Arizona, an author of the new work. The results appear in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. Researchers note that the newly calculated dates fall during the rise of cities in Africa, and they suggest urban development may have promoted HIV's initial establishment and early spread. Scientists say HIV descended from a chimpanzee virus that jumped to humans in Africa, probably when people butchered chimps. Many individuals were probably infected that way, but so few other people caught the virus that it failed to get a lasting foothold, researchers say. But the growth of African cities may have changed that by putting lots of people close together and promoting prostitution, Worobey suggested. "Cities are kind of ideal for a virus like HIV," providing more chances for infected people to pass the virus to others, he said. Perhaps a person infected with the AIDS virus in a rural area went to what is now Kinshasa, Congo, "and now you've got the spark arriving in the tinderbox," Worobey said. Key to the new work was the discovery of an HIV sample that had been taken from a woman in Kinshasa in 1960. It was only the second such sample to be found from before 1976; the other was from 1959, also from Kinshasa. Researchers took advantage of the fact that HIV mutates rapidly. So two strains from a common ancestor quickly become less and less alike in their genetic material over time. That allows scientists to "run the clock backward" by calculating how long it would take for various strains to become as different as they are observed to be. That would indicate when they both sprang from their most recent common ancestor. The new work used genetic data from the two old HIV samples plus more than 100 modern samples to create a family tree going back to these samples' last common ancestor. Researchers got various answers under various approaches for when that ancestor virus appeared, but the 1884-to-1924 bracket is probably the most reliable, Worobey said. The new work is "clearly an improvement" over the previous estimate of around 1930, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Md. His institute helped pay for the work. Fauci described the advance as "a fine-tuning."
Experts say it's no surprise that HIV circulated in humans for about 70 years before being recognized. An infection usually takes years to produce obvious symptoms, a lag that can mask the role of the virus, and it would have infected relatively few Africans early in its spread, they said. Read More
