1st Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Pool Party

Last year, over 20,000 people attended Miami Beach Gay Pride on Ocean Drive.  This year Pride will be bigger and better with an estimated 35,000 people expected to attend. This year’s Pride festivities will be complimented by the first official Miami Beach Gay Pride Pool Party, which will take place on the rooftop pool of the Hotel Victor in the center of all the Pride festivities. The First Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Pool Party will begin at 11 a.m. with a VIP parade-viewing event. Miami Teacher Murdered By Gay Ex-Lover

North Miami, Florida Police have determined Miami teacher Charles Brown was stabbed to death last week because he didn't want to make a relationship work with his former boyfriend, Gregory Higgs (pictured left). Higgs has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. According to a police report, neighbors watched in horror as Higgs stabbed Brown several times with a kitchen knife in the hallway at Inland Towers Apartment. Higgs, 53, then fled the scene but was captured a short time later. Police believe the two men knew each other for a long time and had an intimate relationship for the past seven or eight years before brown broke it off for unknown reasons. Brown, a 54-year-old teacher at North Miami High School, began receiving threatening E-mails at work and Higgs also sent his angry letters to the Miami-Dade County School Board. Gregory Higgs Police believe all Higgs wanted was an explanation for the break-up and he waited in the hallway at brown's apartment to get it.

SOUTH FLORIDA PALM SPRINGS If you are able to get away from the big city for a little desert fun, the big, gay mecca of Palm Springs will surely be your destination. On December 5, the city celebrates with its annual Festival of Lights Parade (www.paradesofpalmsprings.com). That evening glows with illuminated floats, equestrian groups, marching bands, and local celebrities practicing their most courtly waves.   While you’re in the desert, why not do some camping? No, not with tents and campfires, but with the Follies Holiday Show (www.psfollies.com). Every November and December, the elder statesmen and women of the Follies present a lavish holiday show with a gentle snowfall in the theatre, candy cane girls, and a Hanukkah bear all surrounded by high-kicking chorines in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. The event, sister to Art Basel in Switzerland, happens December 3–6 this year, and is an ever-groundbreaking gathering of international artists and collectors that transforms the Art Deco District into the cosmopolitan beating heart of the art world. A graceful Fort Lauderdale New Year’s celebration by the sea is celebrated with OceanDance 2009, December 30–31, when leading dance companies ring in the new year on a beach stage under the stars. Mark's List Claims Theft

The owner of one of Florida’s largest gay websites is fighting back after discovering a new start-up company is allegedly stealing his site’s content. JumpOnMarksList.com owner Mark Haines claims that owners of ThePinkLife.com has taken a majority of their content from his website and the websites of other local gay organizations such as Sobe Gay Life and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Mark’s List is a seven-year-old company that posts GLBT photos, news, events restaurant and bar reviews.  They attract about 4,000-6,000 unique visitors per day, with most of their traffic from the South Florida area but with significant readership across the state. The Pink Life is also a GLBT website, which has been in development for about one year, and had their soft launch coincide with Miami Beach Gay Pride in early April, according The Pink Life owner Lesette Figueroa. Haines recently sent a 22-page copyright infringement letter to EZOT, Inc., former host of the The Pink Life.  In his complaint, Haines states, “The website http://thepinklife.com was clearly based on the work of Mark’s List and is littered with content copied directly from Mark’s list.” The letter then goes on to demonstrate 17 examples of content that Haines says The Pink Life stole off of his website. He said that is only a small portion and not an exhaustive list.

 

Haines said he learned about The Pink Life about six weeks ago when organizations such as Care Resource and Broward House began to send The Pink Life letters asking them to not use their logos without permission. Broward House’s Director of Public Relations, Marketing & Events Terry DeCarlo, confirmed that he sent an email to The Pink Life asking them to remove Broward House’s logo from their webpage because, “We had no idea who they were.” Haines said he waited about four weeks and sent his own cease and desist letter on April 22. He said The Pink Life ignored his request and he decided to send the 22-page complaint to the hosting service, and within a week the website had been removed. 24th Annual White Party 2008 Is In Progress

The Miami White Party is an annual fundraiser party for HIV/AIDS research. The all-white clothing theme was chosen by co-founder Frank Wager because, as he said, "White stands for purity. The Miami party began as a small fundraising event for the Health Crisis Network in 1985, bringing in a total of $16,000. In 1995, more events joined the White Party, including "The Victory Party" and "Muscle Beach". In 1998, the Health Crisis Network merged with Community Research Initiative, and the White Party brought in over $2 million for their efforts. It is now the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the world. With DJs and artists attending from all over the world, the music has come to be renown and a central part of the party. White Party CDs have been produced since 1996.

Today Care Resource (Community AIDS Resource) governs the party. It operates with over 100 employees in both Dade and Broward County providing medical, counseling, testing, psychosocial, a food bank and more to their clients. White Party Week Miami attracts thousands of participants with a week of events, including the signature White Party at Vizcaya, Muscle Beach Party, and exclusive Women's events. White Party Week Miami has been featured in W, Vanity Fair, Glamour magazine, The New York Times, and has been the subject of documentaries on Bravo, The Travel Channel, the BBC, Playboy Channel, and others.
