R.I.P. - Gay Dwarf Activist Harry Wielder Killed By New York Taxi

The New York Post said Harry Wieder, 57, walked with crutches and was leaving a community board meeting last night when he crossed in the middle of the block and was hit by a yellow taxi cab. "We had all just left the (board) meeting and his car was parked across the street. It was laborious for him to walk. For him to walk to the corner and cross the street would have been extremely difficult. He was crossing the street in the middle of the block," said district manager Susan Stetzer. "The cab driver was very distraught." Mr Wieder was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The diminutive crusader got his start as an activist in the early 1980s when he came out as gay and got involved in the rights group Act-Up. "He came out of the closet like a cannonball," said author Betty Adelsen, who profiled Mr Wieder in her 2005 book, The Lives of Dwarves: Their Journey From Public Curiosity Toward Social Liberation. In the following years. Mr Wieder became a fixture at community board meetings, rallies and all sorts of political events, where he became well known to New York City’s political players. Mr Wieder, the child of Holocaust survivors, was born in 1953 with achondraplasia - a kind of dwarfism - and was raised in Queens. In the early 1980s he underwent surgery on his spine that left him walking with crutches or using a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He also suffered significant hearing loss and lived in a home for the deaf on the Lower East Side. Read more at the New York Post

Last month, the NOH8 Campaign came to New York City, inviting any and all New Yorkers to strike a pose for gay marriage.
Jess: I noticed that there are some obvious omissions from the campaign, like Lady Gaga or Adam Lambert. I know you’ve reached out to them repeatedly via Twitter, why haven’t they participated?
A. Bouska: It’s tough, I can’t speak for them cause I’m not really sure. I haven’t had any direct contact with them, I mean there could be publicists in the middle. Many people have different reasons for not doing it because of their publicists, different fan bases that they don’t want to alienate. Though I don’t think that would be the case with Lady Gaga or Adam Lambert. I assume it’s just a busy schedule with them. I know Lady Gaga supports it, we’ve got pictures of her wearing our bracelets and stuff like that but we’ve reached out to her publicist and no response.

True Colors GLBT Homeless Youth Residence Breaks Ground

West End Intergenerational Residence HDFC, Inc. has closed financing and commenced construction on an exciting new housing development effort: True Colors Residence, located in Central Harlem. True Colors Residence will be New York City's first permanent housing facility with support services for 18-24 year old lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth with a history of homelessness. The undertaking was conceived by West End Executive Director Colleen Jackson, and by musical artist Cyndi Lauper and Ms. Lauper's manager Lisa Barbaris. The project entails the construction of a new, energy-efficient multifamily building containing 30 studio apartments, indoor and outdoor community space for residents, and a computer room and resource library. The building is named in honor of  Lauper's support for the project and for West End, and references Cyndi Lauper's hit song, "True Colors." "Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth living on the streets and in foster care need our support more than ever," said Cyndi Lauper. "In New York City, the True Colors Residence is going to play a big role in providing these young people with the leg up and encouragement they need. I am thrilled that construction has already begun and I am honored to be a part of this important project."

Two Charged With Hate Crimes In Gay Man's Beating

Two New York men accused of brutally beating an openly gay man have been indicted on hate crime charges, authorities said. The indictment filed Thursday morning charges defendants Daniel Aleman, 26, and Daniel Rodriguez, 21, both of College Point in Queens, New York, of 14-counts of assault and robbery as a hate crime, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. If convicted, both men face up to 25 years in prison. Police say the two men shouted "anti-gay remarks" while viciously beating victim Jack Price, 49, as he left a 24-hour deli on College Point Boulevard in Queens in October 2009. After the assault, the two men stole Price's wallet and other personal property from his pockets. Price was treated at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens for a broken jaw, several broken ribs, two collapsed lungs and a lacerated spleen. Aleman and Rodriguez are being held without bail. Their arraignment is scheduled for January 25. Ted Kasapis, attorney for Rodriguez, said he doesn't believe prosecutors will be able to prove "any hate crimes here." NYC Cabbie Kicks Out Gay Couple For Hugging

paulbcab1109A cabbie is being called out for kicking a gay couple to the curb after they hugged one another in his cab. This G-rated embrase caused Medhat Mohamed to allegedly toss the two out just two blocks after he had picked them up at 13th Street and First Avenue in New York City around 10:20 p.m. Monday night. The NY Post talked to one of the men, 27-year-old Paul Bruno (pictured), who says the driver told them: "You guys have to get out of the taxi! Hugging is not allowed in here!" He says he doesn't know if the shocking act of discrimination "was a personal or religious thing," but the driver is "in the wrong place and in the wrong line of work if he doesn't have an open and tolerant attitude. I've seen a lot more go on in taxis than hugging." As for the complaint they filed against the driver, the Taxi and Limousine Commission says they will take the allegation "very seriously and fully investigate." Service refusal comes with a fine anywhere from $200 to $500 and could lead to license suspension or revocation.

Naked Cowboy Drops Out Of Mayoral Race

Most locals in NYC and tourist have observed him serenading passerbyers clad only in skimpy white briefs. He has a colorful past as does all of us. Robert Burck also known as the Naked Cowboy of Times Square has a fan club of long-time admirers who sans the decorative padded bulging 'codpiece' this street cantor has done money-shots. Naked Cowboy's entrée into the flesh market dates back as as research shows with an appearance in May 1998 and November 1996 for Playgirl magazine and in 1999 he posed for Advocate Men magazine. Who Is This Cowboy? Robert John Burck (born December 23, 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio), better known as the Naked Cowboy, is an American busker whose patch is on New York City's Times Square. He wears only cowboy boots, a hat, and briefs, with a guitar strategically placed to give the illusion of nudity.

nakedcowboy1Burck began busking in 1998 and first appeared on Venice Beach, Los Angeles. The public immediately gave him much of their spare change after a friend suggested to him that he dress only in his underwear in order to generate higher earnings. Burck earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at the University of Cincinnati. Though he is currently most famous as a fixture of New York City's Times Square, Burck is also a regular in the streets of the French Quarter during the New Orleans Mardi Gras season. He also makes appearances in his hometown of Cincinnati, at the Memorial Day weekend Taste of Cincinnati festival and the Riverfest Labor Day Festival. He has also made an appearance in Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest Music Conference, and on January 25, 2009 he performed at a Leinster Rugby game in Donnybrook, Dublin, Ireland, singing his theme song "I'm the Naked Cowboy" before 18,000 spectators.

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in New York City headerEven if you're not in the mood for a vanilla cone, you can't miss Doug Quint's ice cream truck on the streets of New York City. Quint owns and operates the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. And with that name emblazoned on the truck — along with a big, rainbow-colored soft-serve cone logo — Quint is bound to turn heads. What exactly makes it the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck? Quint gets that question a lot.
"Every day, at least a couple of times," Quint says. "And every time, I say, 'I make it gay.' "
Quint also gets asked whether he's gay.
"If I weren't gay, I wouldn't call it the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. And if I weren't happy, I wouldn't have the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. It would just be the big crabby ice cream truck," Quint says.
Quint, who is a classically trained bassoonist, has only been in the ice cream business for a few months. The ice cream truck is just a summer gig while most orchestras are on break.
"It kind of came about because the idea of a middle-aged gay guy driving an ice cream truck seemed pretty humorous and a little bit suspect to me. I love the idea of what people might be saying, so I thought, 'Whatever they might be saying, let's grab it and amplify it times a hundred and label the truck that way,' " Quint says. "There's gonna be no doubt. It's the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck."
As for Quint's menu, he says it's sort of "metrosexual," with toppings like ground wasabi peas, caramelized bacon, Trix cereal and Nutella. But if you're looking for something more traditional and more in line with the truck's name, you can always order rainbow sprinkles.
