San Francisco: The Gay Capital of the Nation? It sure is '40 and Fabulous'

San Francisco's reputation as a gay mecca goes back to 1964 when the city "came out" on the pages of LIFE magazine. A controversial photo spread put gays on coffee tables across the country.  "It was against the law then actually, for homosexuals to congregate even, but they could bust you if you just put your hand on someone's shoulder" recalls Mike Caffee in the news clip from ABC we have embedded below for you.

So what do you think ... Is San Francisco the Gay Capital of the Nation?

[polldaddy poll=3397333]

San Francisco's annual gay pride parade is celebrating its 40th anniversary. A two-day celebration gets under way Saturday afternoon at the city's Civic Center Plaza and includes numerous concerts and events leading up to the popular parade Sunday. You can watch the parade LIVE on the internet HERE San Francisco Pride Executive Director Amy Andre says the fight for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people has come a long way since the first pride celebration in 1970. At the time, gay sex was a crime in California. This year, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to deliver a prerecorded address after the parade. Andre says Pelosi will be the highest ranking federal official ever to address a pride event. The theme of this year's celebration is "40 and Fabulous."

Gay New Years Eve From Around The World

New Year's Eve is hyped as the party of the year, and consequently, trying to ensure that it will be a great night can be stressful. Why is there SO MUCH emphasis on this one night?? Everybody has had at least one New Year's dud, where plans didn't materialize as expected and the final countdown ended up taking place in a lame bar, or worse, stuck in a car or taxi, trying to get somewhere at Midnight!! It starts around Sydney and travels time zone by time zone around the globe like some sort of well-coordinated pre-planned pyrotechnic explosion. SYDNEY. Take your choice – party on the water, party on the bridge or party in a pub. The first major city to celebrate the coming of the New Year is also one of the best. How good is Sydney? The fireworks end at 12:15 but the celebrations last until dawn. Top Tip: Wear black. That's the wardrobe color of choice for social Sydneysiders. Weather: It's summer so pretty warm, but have a light jacket handy. San Francisco, CA - Perhaps the greatest of all American cities, San Francisco doesn't hesitate to let its hair down on New Year's -- literally. The town's huge gay community is influential in setting the New Year's party vibe, as clubs stock their December 31st lineups with burlesque shows, drag queens and DJs obsessed with Cher and Madonna. Salsa dancing parties abound, and the city's "street crawl" features the usual mix of fireworks and revelry. New York City - Perhaps the epicenter of the US  on New Years Eve. New York City is still the place to be on New Year's Eve. New York remains the control center for celebrations across the continent, which is why hundreds of thousands of people will pack themselves into the colorful Times Square to watch  Dick Clark possibly, Ryan Seacrest for sure, count down the seconds until the ball drops.  As with everything else in New York, you're sure to find entertainment for New Year's, whether it's the corner pub or cabaret or the sweaty confines of hot clubs uptown, midtown and downtown.Touch Nightclub is a new club in the heart of Time Square. Club TOUCH promises to be a celebrity filled party on 3 levels. Weather: Usually COLD! Prague - One of the world's most beautiful cities attracts people from throughout Europe because they know a great party when the see one. Prague is an awesome place to play anytime and on the Big Night it literally explodes. That's because the Czechs just love fireworks. Wander in and out of the many pubs and cafes but at midnight go to Old Town Square or Charles Bridge. Climb the hill to the Prague Castle or the "Stalin statue," where the fireworks are launched for an overview of the whole crazy scene. Prague is unbelievably inexpensive; your crowns go a long. long way. Czech it out! Top Tip: Watch out for flying fireworks of every size and description. Weather: The average temperature for January is -1.3C (30F), so it's cold. This makes quick jaunts into the many cafes a requirement. IN  LONDON, you have your choice of  a  BEARS AND BIG  BLOKES  New Years  Eve at the Eagle ,  or  maybe  something on the KINKY side. Kinky Trade brings together 3 big promoters...Trade, Juicy and Lovechild for a wild evening with lasers, pyrotechs  and more. The ball is dropping; the champagne is popping. Grab your goofy hat and ring in next year with a rockin New Year s Eve party.

The "No Sex" Sign Guy: "Quit Your Whoring Now - Fornicator"

fornicator_sign no_sex_manJust feet from a gay pride flag flapping in the breeze in downtown San Francisco, Owen Dias squats on the fire hydrant five days a week like Dorothy landed in Oz. In this city renowned for free love, the first topless club, and a mayor beloved despite his adulterous sex scandal, a man with a "No Unlawful Sex" sign is mostly dismissed as an oddity. But Dias has returned five days a week for 22 years, sitting in his natty suit and top hat through the taunts that he's a repressed gay, through the invitations to hook up, through the on-line claims they've got him into bed. "No sex!" he calls to harried passerby. "No sloppy seconds!" Owen and his sign define unlawful sex as anything other than a "virgin man and a virgin women" in marriage (read: he or she who has masturbated or looked upon another in lust is no longer a virgin). If you've engaged in any other type of nooky, he says the only way you can get right with the Lord is to stop having sex for the rest of your days.  "I've never had sex in my whole life," boasts the 70-something-year-old in his round, rolling accent that sounds vaguely like he's from the Louisiana bayou. "Never masturbated in my whole life either. Since I came out of my mother's womb." Growing up in Belize, Dias says the calling struck him while he was working on a Buick Riviera in his auto body shop in Pasadena in 1974. He stopped working on cars that very day to start spreading the word before he made his way to the debaucherous city by the bay. So, does he actually believe he's made a dent in the licentious desires of San Franciscans? "My work is not to make 'em [do it], my work is just to tell 'em. I'm a messenger." A chunky teenage kid with braces snapped a photo. "It's hilarious," the kid said, "and true." Dias was obviously pleased: "A young kid that thinks it's also true." Of course, the kid also announced he was from Maryland. Story SF Weekly

Vigil Marks 31st Anniversary Of Milk, Moscone Assassination

harvey-george-1A vigil was held in San Francisco's Castro District on Friday night to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone by former Supervisor Dan White.  Milk was the nation's first openly-gay man to be elected to public office when he won the supervisor's race in 1978.  Milk became a martyr to the L.G.B.T civil rights cause when he said in a recording he made in the event of his assassination, "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door in the country." harvey-george-9State Senator Mark Leno praised those who attended the small vigil on the corner of Castro and Market streets: "These are the faithful that keep the flame alive, that remember the struggles that we fought in those days and the struggles we continue to fight to be first-class citizens." The vigil for Milk and Moscone has been held every year as the LGBT community faced the AIDS crisis and other struggles. Many of those in attendance at Friday night's vigil called for a new effort to overturn Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California last year. LGBT activists remain divided on whether a repeal effort should be attempted in 2010 or held off until 2012. Leno said the vigil also marked the passage of a bill making Milk's birthday a day of special recognition in California. "Every May 22nd, Harvey's birthday will now be declared as Harvey Milk Day in California, which will help teach that chapter of history to more and more Californians," said Leno. Story by KTVU.com. 20 Years Ago This Past Week, Police Do The Castro Sweep

castro stripBy San Francisco standards the evening of Friday, October 6, 1989 started off like any other, with a cool sea breeze buffeting the city and residents welcoming the start of the weekend. In the Civic Center area, AIDS activists had gathered to protest the lack of federal funding to deal with the deadly virus that was decimating the gay male community at the time. But what many had expected to be another routine rally organized by ACT UP would instead result in a violent takeover of the gay Castro District that rocked the police department and reverberated throughout City Hall. The incident would become known as the "Castro Sweep" and prolong a rift between the city’s law enforcement and LGBT community that had began a decade earlier with the White Night riots sparked by a lenient sentence for the killer of the city’s first openly gay supervisor, Harvey Milk, and Mayor George Moscone. [MEDIA not found] Before the night was through, the police had shut down an entire city neighborhood and arrested 53 people and injured 10. Four police officers also were injured during the several hours-long occupation of the Castro. castro-kissing"Castro Held Hostage" The headline in the following week’s Bay Area Reporter screamed "Castro Held Hostage." A photo showed a bleeding Michael Barrett lying on the ground, having been injured by a police officer wielding his baton. As reporter Brett Averill described the incident, he wrote that what had started "as a bland plea for more AIDS funds ended five hours later with bloodied heads, mass arrests, and the specter of fully armed riot police marching through the heart of the Castro sweeping demonstrators and confused passersby from the streets and sidewalks." Recalling that evening in an interview with the B.A.R. this week, Brian Bringardner, an out gay man who had joined in the ACT UP protest that night, described the incident as "a military occupation of the Castro." "I just remember how terrifying and surreal the whole thing was," said Bringardner, who now works as an assistant district attorney. "They took over the entire Castro neighborhood, which had never happened before." 05_09_Castro_Sweep_40_LRGGerard Koskovich, who at the time was a freelance journalist and recent Stanford University graduate, also had decided to take part in the AIDS protest, which began at the federal building a few blocks from City Hall. He said the rally had only drawn about 150 people and the plan was to march to the Castro, making stops along the way at City Hall and then the Mint building, before ending at Harvey Milk Plaza at Castro and Market streets. Pop Goes The Zipper: 'I Wasn't Tardy For This Rocking Party'

POPGOESFamed Porn Director  DJ Chi Chi LaRue and the most photographed nun in the world Sister Roma presented POP GOES THE ZIPPER, Friday night at San Francisco's Triple Crown Club. Proceeds collected from POP GOES THE ZIPPER will be donated to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The mantra for this grand event was, "Don't be tardy for the party". They were so right about that as when I got there at around 10PM the place was seriously jumping and the boys were humping to the beat of the music. Rob Romoni was working the red carpet and doing color commentary. When I got inside there were Rocco Giovanni and Josh Griffin both working it out on the dancer stage to the beats.

popgoesthezipper

Chi Chi threw on some old school Michael Jackson and guess who jumped on the floor and busted his best MJ moves? None other than Wolf Hudson. Yes he can dance really really well! The King of Kink might just be the king of the dance floor too and I even jumped out there too. There were so many people that I recognized that it felt surreal. All of the hottest guys in the gay porn industry were there. Lex Sabre, Adam Killian, Francois Sagat, Eddie Diaz, Ryan Raz, Austin Wilde, David Taylor, Jeremey Bilding, RJ Danvers, Paul Wagner, Scott Tanner and TJ Hawke and plenty more who I saw but did not get a chance to talk too. The models were all stunning and Sister Roma is a total sweetheart. I meet so many models and director Steven Scarborough from Hot House and Jack Shamama and Paul Bookstaber from The Sword and Mr Pam is a gas. I also saw Tim Valente. I met several models who I have tweeted with and they could not have been nicer. I also got to meet two of the coolest guys on Twitter PornoRobbie and Jimyvr. they are to much fun to hang out with. All in all it was a great night of boy watching and chatting with some fun people. I also want to give Jason Sechrest props for his invaluable assistance with this post. I must also thank the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for all of the great work that they do for the GLBT community. Thank you Sisters! elmwatermarkThis is Elmysterio and I'm out and I hope you enjoy my first post here on Just One Hot Minute as a contributing author and correnspondent for San Francisco Bay area.

Arson of Pink Triangle

pinktrianglegayflagCROPPEDArson investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that damaged the Pink Triangle on San Francisco's Twin Peaks Sunday morning just hours before the city's annual Pride Parade was set to kick off.
"Right now investigators are looking at all possible sources of ignition," San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.
The triangle, which overlooks the city atop a large hill at San Francisco's Twin Peaks, is a fabric installation that is set up each year during Pride Week as a symbol of gay liberation and human rights. The symbol was used by the Nazi government during World War II to identify and stigmatize gays. It has since come to stand as a commemoration of those who were persecuted in Germany and a symbol of gay liberation. More information can be found at their website.

The blaze was reported at about 5 a.m. near Christmas Tree Point Road and was extinguished about 30 minutes later. A 25-by-30 foot area was damaged, Talmadge said.
"This is just a really horrible thing to have happen. It's very sad on gay pride day that some idiot would sabotage our symbol of overcoming oppression," said Jeanine Reisbig, who was at the site surveying the damage Sunday morning.
