'Harry Potter' Star Daniel Radcliffe Films Commercial For Gay Suicide Prevention

Daniel Radcliffe, who is best known for playing Harry Potter in the popular film series, is filming a public service announcement for gay and lesbian suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project. In a statement for MTV News, Radcliffe had this to say about the spot: “It’s something I’ve always been quite passionate about. Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to.” Radcliffe has dipped his feet in a number of other projects away from the "Harry Potter" universe. He took a controversial role in the play "Equus," and has even made an appearance on the now-defunct HBO show "Extras." Are you glad that Daniel Radcliffe is speaking out in a PSA? Two Dead Gay Men Found In San Diego, Murder-Suicide Investigation Underway

Two men are dead in what appears to be a murder-suicide in a San Diego, California apartment on Friday. San Diego police, conducting a welfare check at La Hacienda Apartments in the 3900 block of Wilson Avenue, found the two bodies around 4 p.m. "The door was closed," described Lt. David Nisleit with the San Diego Police Department.  "We could see inside that there were two dead males on the ground." A co-worker of one of the men had requested the welfare check after the person failed to show up at work. Police say they also found a gun inside the apartment.  It's not known how long the bodies lay there, but neighbor Steven Stuhler heard gunshots just the day before. "I heard about 6 or 7 gunshots," Stuhler told San Diego 6.  "And the cops saw me walking down the street and they started asking me some questions." Police have not identified the men but the gay & lesbian news website GLTNN says they are Eric Schulthise (photo-left) and Bob Agnew (photo-below).  Schulthise worked at SeaWorld and was a go-go dancer at the North Park bar Bacchus.  Bob Agnew was a former Naval Academy instructor.  The site claims the two men dated off and on. Neighbors report having seen the two men recently arguing in front of the building. Lover Gets "Spun" & Hangs Self Over His Boyfriend's Failure To Buy Him A New Car

A gay was found dead in his condominium unit in Quezon City, Phillippines Saturday night after he hanged himself when his American boyfriend declined to buy him a car. Romeo de Jesus, 32, was already dead when he was found at around 7 p.m. Saturday in his condominium unit.. A police officer said that De Jesus, who was already in advance stage of decomposition, was hanging from the ceiling with a GI wire looped around his neck. Police also theorized that De Jesus was also high on illegal drugs when he committed suicide since police also found in his condominium unit 16 pieces of sealed sachets containing shabu (or methamphetamine hydrochloride), two rolls of aluminium foils, 17 strips of aluminium foils, and four lighters. De Jesus’ roomate, Allan Battaler, 27, told police that the victim’s boyfriend, navy man Joseph Coether, called him from Iraq, asking him to look after his friend (De Jesus) because he threatened to kill himself after the navy man refused his request to buy him a new car. source: Manila News

Commits Suicide In Jail

Petty Officer Jonathan Campos of Lancaster was found dead in his military jail cell at Camp Pendleton. Campos stood accused of murdering Seaman August Provost, a 29-year-old Houston native who "was shot multiple times as he stood guard at Camp Pendleton on June 30." Including Provost's murder, Campos faced 16 total charges stemming from the incident, "including murder, arson, unlawful entry, theft of military property and wrongful possession of a firearm." The pair had both served in a 500-member assault-craft unit; Provost was described as being openly gay, but quiet about his private life. Campos spent much of his spring battling drug and other legal demons; he had been accused by Navy officials of "using hallucinogenic mushrooms several times between May 1 and June 2," as well as committed robbery at the San Diego home of another serviceman on the 13th. He was arrested for a DUI on the 20th, but was on guard duty the night of the 30th when he shot and killed Provost. Once described as a "rising star" in the Navy, Campos' "cause of death was determined to be self-inflicted asphyxiation."

Gay Boy Parents Sue

The parents of a gay teenager have sued his Ohio high school, claiming that constant bullying there drove him to suicide, 365Gay.com reports. According to court papers, 17-year-old Eric Mohat was subjected to relentless name-calling, teasing and physical abuse in class and in the school's hallways. His parents, William and Janis Mohat of Mentor, Ohio, say their son was often harassed in front of teachers, and they claim that school bullying led to the suicides of three other students the same year Eric killed himself. They are not seeking money but they want to force Mentor High School to put an anti-bullying program in place. The lawsuit names the school district, administrators Jacqueline A. Hoynes and Joseph Spiccia, and math teacher Thomas M. Horvath. On March 27, 2007, Eric returned home from school and shot himself in the head. The lawsuit describes an incident that allegedly occurred during his last day at school.

"On the day Eric committed suicide, one of the students who had been harassing him said to Eric, in front of other students and, by information and belief, in front of defendant Horvath, 'Why don't you go home and shoot yourself? No one would miss you,'" said the court documents.

A recent study by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) found that 69 percent of junior/middle-school LGBT students reported experiencing assaults or harassment in the previous year, and only 41 percent said they felt very safe at school.

Coroner Reports Caleb's Death

Gay Pornstar, Caleb Carter's death was due to suicide and Caleb was HIV positive according to detailed Coroner Investigation Reports. Carter was found dead in his San Diego apartment, Friday, February 20th 2009. Caleb whose birth name is Benjamin Gilbert worked as a gay porn performer since 2003,  and was well known in the Southern California gay social scene, he was also featured on two MTV reality shows, True Life and Parental Control. You may recall our previous post about learning of Caleb's death after getting the scoop from our friend Dewayne in San Diego. Following Caleb's death, a detailed post from Caleb's step-father (Chuck) appeared on Yves Mignon's Blog where he thanked everyone and set the record straight about Caleb's age and denounced other rumors which had been circulating across the Internet. Brad Breakfast, the blogger behind the blog, "Boys for Breakfast" has obtained copies of the official investigation reports and reveals how Caleb attempted to "hook-up" with him just prior to Carter committing suicide. Brad suspects Caleb may have connected with others online who may or may not have knew Caleb's HIV status. Brad who is 24 years old and lives in San Diego has been blogging since late 2003 and since that time has turned a small gay blog into a widely known gay porn sensation. San Diego Police Dispatch received the call on 02/20/09, at 1621 hours. Police officers were dispatched to 1233 Essex Street, apartment #3, in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. They arrived at 1624 hours. Upon arrival, officers knocked on the door, but did not get an answer. The apartment manager assisted officers by using her master key to gain entry into the residence.

Carter was found in his bedroom closet hanging in an upright kneeling position, from the clothing rod by a J. Crew burgundy scarf. Clothes, shoes, condoms, and debris littered the floor. By time he was found he was in the late stages of rigor mortis which was noted to his extremities, which was overcome by “minimal” force. It’s not unusual for Coroner Technicians to have to break the bones of bodies so that they are in a proper “body bag” position.  A plastic dildo and condom wrappers on the floor of the closet, but no porn was found in his bedroom. Carter never left a suicide note but left his laptop running, which went into sleep mode by time the Coroner arrived, they noted he as logged into his email account but when they tried to access the “Sent” folder, the account had logged out automatically due to the inactivity time. The Coroner Investigative summery also states that Carter was “known to partake of illicit drugs recreationally. His drugs of choice were cocaine, marijuana, and ecstasy.” His alcohol of choice was Vodka which the Coroner found a LARGE amount of consumed containers of various sizes around his small, shabby apartment. Caleb Carter Dead At 24

Benjamin Gilbert, 24 years old, best known in the gay adult entertainment industry as Caleb Carter was found dead in his apartment in San Diego from what appears to be suicide on Friday evening. Caleb's first gay porn movie for Chi Chi Larue, ‘Dorm Days’, is one of the most well know videos he appears in. He recently shared with us here at Just One Hot Minute that he was currently working on producing his own porn movie. He also said he was working on developing his own website to feature his productions and would be introducing his own tee-shirt line in the spring. Caleb was a contributing writer for Jason Curious.com and very close friends with Jason himself. We learned of this horrible news this afternoon when we saw an article in our news feed from DewayneinSD. You can visit his site to get more details. At this time we are awaiting further confirmation from close friends of Caleb. When we discover more information we will update our post. • Some Facts About Suicide: -In America, more than 32,000 people commit suicide each year (2005 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). -Suicide is one of the top three causes of death among 15 to 24-year-olds; only accidents and homicide occur more frequently (2006 National Adolescent Health Information). -Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college campuses (2008 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). -For every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made (2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey). -Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey). -Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute).   Warning Signs: -A tendency toward isolation and social withdrawal -Substance abuse -Expression of negative attitudes toward self -Expression of hopelessness or helplessness -Loss of interest in usual activities -Giving away valued possessions -Expression of a lack of future orientation (i.e. "It won't matter soon anyway"). -For someone who has been very depressed, when that depression begins to lift, the individual may be at INCREASED risk of suicide, as the individual will have the psychological energy to follow-through on suicidal ideation.

24 Hour Help For Gay Youth

(CNN) -- The transgendered woman on the other end of the line was threatening to kill herself by jumping off of a parking structure. The Trevor Helpline counselor who answered the phone worked to get the 24-year-old calm and immediately called police for help. Exactly one month later, that same woman called the helpline back -- to thank them for saving her life. Stories like these are the reason The Trevor Project operates its helpline, the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention number for gay and questioning youth. More than 500 volunteers are trained for 40 hours to run the bicoastal call centers. "There's a high level of stress that youth face in the transition from youth to adulthood," Charles Robbins, executive director of The Trevor Project, said. "Add on top of that the challenges of sexual orientation or gender identity and we get 15,000 calls a year." A 2005 Massachusetts Department of Education survey of 3,500 high school students, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found almost 11 percent have seriously considered suicide. And that percentage is almost four times as high for 10 to 24-year-olds who identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual. "Because of the unfortunate stigma that still exists in the United States around homosexuality ... youth tend to hold back their feelings, don't disclose, live in denial or shame," Robbins said. Every year The Trevor Project honors one individual who publicly works to reject that stigma and helps in the group's overall goal: to promote the acceptance of gay and questioning youth in society. This year's honoree, actor Alan Cumming, has been "unapologetic, and true to himself," Robbins said. "Anything that helps those people have a voice and have someone to talk to and have somewhere to turn is really important," Cumming said. "Suicide is in the top three causes of death for teens. To encourage open discussions about suicide, personal identity and sexual orientation, the organization created The Trevor Survival Kit. The kit includes the DVD of "Trevor" and a classroom teaching guide. "All of these resources are helpful and necessary for gay and questioning youth because it's important for them to understand that they are not alone, that there is a safe place for them to find someone to listen, and most importantly, that their lives are valuable," Jacqueline Wing, communications manager for The Trevor Project, wrote in an email.
