Atlanta’s Gay Film Festival

outonfilm

Out on Film, Atlanta’s GLBTQ film festival, kicks off a weekend festival May 28th with the GLBTQ film festival debut of Erin Davies “Fagbug.” On the 11th annual National Day of Silence (April 18, 2007), Erin Davies was victim to a hate crime in Albany, NY. Because of sporting a rainbow sticker on her VW Beetle, Erin's car was vandalized, left with the words "fAg" and "u r gay" placed on the hood and driver side of her car. Despite initial shock and embarrassment, Erin's decided to embrace what happened and film a documentary about her 58-day cross country tour around the US and Canada in her car known worldwide as the fagbug. Following the screening on May 28th will be a Q&A with Erin Davies. The festival will also feature the Atlanta debut of “Mulligans,” starring Charlie David of “Dante’s Cove” and Logo’s ‘Bump!” The film’s executive producer, Joshua Harrell, is an Atlantan. Other films in the schedule include the French romantic comedy “The New World;” the African American comedy “Finding Me;” the documentary “The Universe of Keith Haring;” an encore screening of “Training Rules,” which won the Pink Peach Award at the recent Atlanta Film Festival; Gwen Haworth’s “She’s A Boy I Knew” and a collection of 10 short films, one of which, “The Confession,’ is by local filmmaker Cameron Abdo.

Closing the festival will be the GLBT film festival debut of “STAND-UP 360™ Inside Out.” Hosted by Caroline Rhea, the film features standup performances by Judy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Hedda Lettuce, Rick Crom, and more gay/lesbian comics. The film will open in theaters this summer. Out on Film is dedicated to showcasing films by, about and for the GLBT community. Last spring, Atlanta Film Festival 365 gave Out on Film to the gay/lesbian community. After successful screenings in January and February, Out on Film is hosting this weekend festival before launching its major festival later in the year. Out on Film’s goal is to produce its annual festival in the fall and offer programming/events throughout the year. The Out on Film weekend will be held at the Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce de Leon Avenue, home of 2006’s successful festival. Festival passes are $30 and individual screenings are $10. The Gay Confederacy

compfedgayflagSome folks believe that if a man is gay, he is less than a man. In fact the Southern Baptists and other Southern Holy Rollers in and around the buckle of the Bible Belt think of a gay man as a person as some sort of a demon called up from the pits of hell. Homophobia runs deep in the south. Living in the closet or living out a double-life is all so common in the southern states. I have always found Southern American history interesting and I really love to read gay Southern history. Unfortunately there is not a great deal of it documented. For so long many believed that the gay experience was urban and that sexual freedom was only found in bigger cities. The assumption was that rural areas regulated untraditional sexual practices. However, gay culture and gay sex existed and is quite flourishing in small towns and communities throughout the south. southern-states2Gay history is always in the making and I believe we are living in a day and age that is very fascinating, as fascinating as the Stonewall Riots 40 years ago. The Advocate has a great account of the pioneers who never knew a time before Stonewall in their June/July Double Issue in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Be sure to check it out, as it lists 40 people under 40 years old and their dedication to the promise of the pioneers who came before them. I wanted to give you my take on my gay history that I grew up around and with by sharing with you some things about a film I think you would really enjoy and a film which contains the only known video footage of Matthew Shepard before his death while he was a college student in North Carolina. More than a decade has passed since Tim Kirkman filmed his Emmy-nominated documentary Dear Jesse, yet the piece retains its significance as one of the first accounts of the divisive rhetoric that has come to characterize American politics. This short film is a first-person compare-and-contrast between the gay filmmaker and the notoriously conservative Jesse Helms, who served five terms as a Republican senator from North Carolina. Kirkman, who grew up in a Monroe, North Carolina, seeks to understand what motivates decent, “God-fearing” people to practice the politics of hate.

jacket

In 1972, Helms became the first Republican to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate since the 19th century. His conservative politics quickly earned him the moniker “Senator No” -- that is, no affirmative action, no abortion, no gay rights. Despite his tendency toward intolerance, Helms would become the longest-serving popularly elected U.S. senator in his state's history. Yet it would be a mistake to characterize North Carolina as a state other than one built on “churches and banks,” says local theater director Steve Umberger. His production of Angels in America, a play sympathetic to gays and people with AIDS, met with firm disapproval from conservative Carolinians. And the state was and still is very much composed of middle-class Americans who respect Helms for his consistent -- albeit bigoted -- rhetoric. Although times have changed -- the 1998 film was produced before same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts -- Kirkman shows us that we are still a nation deeply divided over issues of moral “right” and “wrong.” And he points to the toll that this division can take on the American public.

The movie concludes with a short clip of Matthew Shepard, interviewed with his boyfriend at Catawba College in North Carolina two years before his tragic death. Not included in the original documentary, the 1998 tape included the footage as a reminder that a lack of tolerance can breed violence. “This is the only footage I have of Matthew,” Kirkman comments on the film. “It's not fair. It isn't enough.” And it isn't enough to encompass the vitality of the young man. But it does serve to emphasize the necessity for understanding -- on both sides of the divide. dearjessebuyCLICK HERE TO REVIEW AND ORDER DEAR JESSE This telling documentary is an "open letter" to Jesse Helms, the infamously conservative "Senator No." Director Kirkman, a 25-year-old gay man and North Carolina native, who left for the more liberal world of New York returns in this personal quest for understanding and perspective.

Let's Help Out Our Friends

doorqWe all love checking out the hot gay porn featuring the most gorgeous boys on the Internet, right ? We also love some Brent Corrigan, don't you agree? Do you think we also have a passion for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror --- what about Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror when it has a gay theme, even better ... you think ? Have you ever heard of our friend, Jody Wheeler? Jody is a former therapist and social worker, he wrote the recently completed film Heatwave for Here! TV. His short horror film In The Closet (Starring Brent Corrigan), premiered at the 2008 Outfest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. His other screenplays have been honored, twice with a Carl David Screenwriting Award, as a Top 100 Finalist in the Project Greenlight contest, and as a semi-finalist in the Scriptapalooza Screenplay Competition. Not only does Jody like love SciFi, Fantasy and Horror, he really loves SciFi, Fantasy and Horror where the guys kiss the guys. Strangely, he thinks he isn't the only one. Jody is the publisher of Doorq.com. DoorQ is the gateway to everything gay in Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.

brentcorrigan4doorq

Enjoy the video clip featuring "your friend and lover," Brent Corrigan, In The Closet - This video is one among many available at DoorQ.com. In addition to lots of videos DoorQ has tons of cool blogs, personal profiles which can connect you with the entire sphere of SciFi, Fantasy and Horror users like yourself.

DoorQ.com and Jody need your help to keep the videos streaming for free in their network. As a community we need to band together and support each other from time to time when we hit hardships. The Doorq.com theater is a vibrant, free component of their website. While they don’t charge for you to download their content, it still pulls on bandwidth and requires an out of pocket expense for streaming. Keeping this service open and free to the public is very expensive. CAN YOU TAKE A MINUTE AND DROP A COUPLE OF BUCKS in the donation cup and help our friends out ? Here is what Jody Wheeler has to say:
“When the economy tanked last year so did our advertising. But, interestingly, our traffic also rose — doorQs are coming for the community, fiction, and news doorQ.com provides. And those films. Which drives the costs up. Which advertising isn’t covering anymore. Because of that, we’re $3,000 in the hole for video costs. We need to be able to pay that off — really by the end of the month — or we’ll have to shut down the theater until we can close that debt. If you’ve been enjoying the theater, if you’ve been enjoying the original films, shorts, and specials hosted there, I’m hoping you’ll help. I’m hoping that you’ll donate $10… $50… $100… $1000 dollars… okay, maybe that last bit is a bit of a dream… to pay off the costs of the hosting. Please note, this is just about the Theater. The rest of the site is still here to stay. We have a revamp of doorQ.com coming — it’s about that time in the life of the site — which will include some nice new features that should make finding and socializing with other doorQs easier. It’s all part of our never ending quest to make this place the best damn site in the universe. But I really want to keep the theater open. I love the content. I love having a platform for cool, interesting and different Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror programming with gay twists.”
Please, if you have ever watched any DoorQ's stuff and enjoyed it, now the is the time to give back a little to keep this part of Doorq alive. If we can’t keep this alive now it may seriously prevent future projects like these from being produced. Jody has had a number of projects in the works and it would be a shame for all of us if we had to miss out on it entirely because we were unable to support what has come before it. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and as a confirmation of just how much your help would be appreciated Just One Hot Minute will match your donation. So if you donate $5.00 so shall we. Please donate to Doorq.com and keep it alive in its entirety. Besides, in the thick of things are we not all family after all ?

Star Trek The Movie

star-trek_main

There are precious few things in the realm of entertainment that could bring Trekkers and casual sci-fi fans together in geeky harmony, making J.J. Abrams' invigorating Star Trek reboot one of the rare Hollywood commodities that's actually worth getting excited about. Just a few short years ago, it seemed as if the Star Trek universe had gone supernova, exploding into itself with the divisive Next Generation feature Star Trek: Nemesis and the cancelation of the Emmy Award-winning Enterprise. Mission: Impossible III director and Alias creator J.J. Abrams resurrects the classic science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry with this feature film that embraces the rich history of the influential television and film series while also exploring some uncharted territory. Heroes star Zachary Quinto assumes the role of the Federation Starfleet lieutenant and Vulcan made famous in the original series by Leonard Nimoy (who also appears in an older incarnation of his original role), Spock, with Anton Yelchin stepping into the role of USS Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana assuming the role of communications officer Uhura, Simon Pegg keeping the ship in top shape as chief engineer Montgomery Scott (aka "Scotty"), and Eric Bana tormenting the benevolent space explorers as the villainous Nero. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle co-star John Cho also boards the Enterprise as Hikaru Sulu, with Chris Pine and Karl Urban assuming the legendary roles of Captain Kirk and Leonard "Bones" McCoy, respectively. ~  amg_logo Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Mark's Take: I really enjoyed this movie. I want to go see it in IMAX next weekend. Go with an open mind as if you know nothing about Star Trek. This has been the BEST science-fiction flick I've saw in years!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

wolverine1Hugh Jackman is a man of varied talents. And killer claws, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As Wolverine, the unstoppable mutant with the shiny metal knuckle knives, Jackman artfully embodies a character who is both ferocious and humane. In this fourth X-Men installment, we learn how Wolverine is recruited into a secret military corps and lured into the sinister Weapon X program. Jackman invests his fierce character with a cheeky attitude, clear-eyed intelligence and inherent decency, compelling viewers to care about his metamorphosis.  Wolverine, set circa mid-1970s, also reveals the early years of the vicious Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber) and the villainous William Stryker (Danny Huston). A few mutants are unveiled: Deadpool, a wise-cracking swordsman with deadly aim (Ryan Reynolds); Gambit (Taylor Kitsch), who can imbue inanimate objects with explosive charges; and the teleporting Wraith (The Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am). Despite a couple of "Nooooo" yowls, Wolverine is well-acted, with spectacular action and witty one-liners. The special effects are top-notch. A few plot points raise questions, such as how Wolverine lost his memory. And his romance with Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins) is unconvincing. wolverine6Some sequences stand out: A scene with a helicopter, a tank and several Hummers in pursuit of Wolverine is exhilarating. Equally spectacular is a climactic fight on the edge of a nuclear reactor. Though consistent in tone with the previous movies, this prequel, directed by Gavin Hood (2005's foreign-language Oscar winner Tsotsi), is an otherworldly fantasy, where the others were dark and brooding sci-fi adventures. Although it's a quintessential popcorn movie, Wolverine is not mindless. Hood and Jackman bring depth to a comic-book tale of anti-heroes with anger issues. Visit the Official Movie Website

Brüno Makes Them Squirm

cohenhorse_168181s

How many different ways are there to annoy people with a silly accent? That’s a question that will soon be answered by Sacha Baron Cohen and Larry Charles, the star and director who gave us Borat and now return with Brüno, the story of a gay, Euro-trashy Austrian fashion expert. Brüno is a character Cohen developed along with Borat on Da Ali G Show; the movie, to be released on July 10, will follow the same format as Borat, a series of loosely connected segments in which Cohen embarrasses real people with his idiotic questions and behaviour. Cohen has found out the hard way that this is the only way he can make a successful movie; in 2002, when he transferred his most popular character to a scripted film, Ali G Indahouse, the result was a financial flop. There’s only one thing his fans want to see him doing: making real people squirm. bruno1Cohen will do anything to get to those uncomfortable moments, like the scenes in Brüno where (in a parody of Madonna and Angelina’s baby-collecting) he adopts an African baby and, in front of shocked onlookers, names him “O.J.” If he risks a lawsuit, that’s just part of what he does. One of the big stories about Borat was that Cohen and the producers were sued all over the U.S. by people who didn’t realize that the movie would portray them negatively. Some plaintiffs claimed they had been defamed; others argued that Cohen had invaded their privacy by putting them on film. The most-publicized challenge came from three frat boys in South Carolina who were paid $200 apiece to appear in the movie and say a few words—which turned out to include comments like “it would be a better country if we had slaves.” One of them told ABC News that the producers “told us a lie” by suggesting that Borat was a real person and that this was a documentary for his native country of Kazakhstan. By the time they knew it wasn’t true, the film was in theatres and everyone was laughing at them.   brunoThough Cohen made these people angry, he doesn’t seem to have much to fear from them in court: almost every one of the Borat suits has been tossed out. Some of the people who appeared in the film signed release forms (that promised, accurately if evasively, that it was a “documentary-style” movie). Other people, like the guy who ran away from Borat screaming “Go away! What are you doing!” didn’t give permission, but judges ruled that Cohen’s fiction is protected by the same laws that apply to news programs and real documentaries. Cohen went into Brüno knowing that as long as he’s embarrassing these people to make a satirical point, he’s in the clear.

Zac's Pool Party Crashed

zacmainZac Efron’s Uncle Hank and his girlfriend, Randi, crash Zac’s pool party and they just can not be cool. Check out the video below. As you may know I'm just nuts over some Zac Efron. I think he is the most gorgeous boy on the planet. Anytime I see something in the news about Zac I have to make a post. Now you know what I use for a screensaver on my computer. I'll be in the front row when his new movie 17 Again hits theaters on April 17th. Zachary David Alexander "Zac" Efron was born October 18, 1987. He began acting professionally in the early 2000s, and became known to young audiences after his roles in the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical, the WB series Summerland, and the film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray. Speaking to Newsweek in June 2006, director Adam Shankman described Efron as "arguably the biggest teen star in America right now." In 2007, right before the release of High School Musical 2, Rolling Stone declared him the "poster boy for tweenyboppers" and featured him in their late August issue.
