Larry Johnson Not Gaining Fans With The Gays

larry_johnsonKansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has used three anti-gay slurs in the past 24 hours after he was confronted about using his Twitter account to rip his head coach Todd Haley. When reporters entered the Chiefs locker room on Monday, Johnson said he was not answering any questions until Thursday. He then uttered this under his breath, according to radio station KCSP and Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star:
“Get your faggot asses out of here.”
Last night, when Johnson got into a Twitter spat with a fan, he called the fan a “fag,” according to Yahoo Sports, which monitored the exchange:
“think bout a clever diss then that wit ur fag pic. Christopher street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u.”
“Christopher street boy” is an obvious reference to gays for the Christopher Street gay pride parade in New York. The fan made mention of Johnson pleading guilty after allegedly spitting in the face of a female bar patron. Johnson went off on Twitter (his account, once public, is now private) after the Chiefs (1-6) lost to San Diego, 37-7. He wrote that his father had more experience than first-year Chiefs head coach Todd Haley:
“My father played for the coach from “rememeber the titans”. Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn”
Johnson has had numerous run-ins with the law:
Johnson has had four arrests for various degrees of battery since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2003. One charge was pled down, with Johnson serving time in a domestic violence diversion program. A second charge was dropped, while two other charges - including the aforementioned spitting incident - were reduced to disturbing the peace. Johnson received probation for a guilty plea in the latter two charges.
“Fag,” “Faggot” and “Christopher street boy.” The NFL (if not the Chiefs) must fine and suspend Larry Johnson or else it condones the use of such language by its players. STORY FROM OUTSPORTS

Stephen Gately Death Column Sparks Twitter Rage

stephen_gatelyBritain's press watchdog said Monday it had received a record 21,000 complaints about a newspaper column on the death of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately after critics used Twitter to brand the article homophobic and insensitive. Gately died Oct. 10, aged 33, while vacationing on the Spanish island of Mallorca. An autopsy found he had died of natural causes from pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs. Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir wrote in a column Friday that Gately's death was "not, by any yardstick, a natural one" and said he died in "sleazy" circumstances, She noted that Gately, who came out publicly as gay in 1999, had been to a bar and invited a young Bulgarian man back to his apartment the night before he died. Moir concluded that "under the carapace of glittering, hedonistic celebrity, the ooze of a very different and more dangerous lifestyle has seeped out for all to see." gately_funeralAnger at the column swept social networking site Twitter soon after Moir's piece appeared on the paper's Web site. Actor Stephen Fry urged his 860,000 Twitter followers to contact the Press Complaints Commission. Other prominent Tweeters followed suit, and provided links to the commission's Web site. Advertisers including retail chain Marks and Spencer asked to have their ads removed from the Mail Web page carrying Moir's column. In a blog post Monday, Fry called Moir's column an "epically ill-judged piece of gutter journalism." Moir defended her article, claiming suggestions of homophobia were "mischievous" and suggesting the backlash was a "heavily orchestrated Internet campaign." The commission said Monday it had received "by far the highest number of complaints ever" about a single article. It said it would write to the newspaper seeking a response before deciding whether to take further action. Irish boy band Boyzone sold millions of albums in the 1990s and had six British No. 1 singles, including "All That I Need" and a cover of the Bee Gees' "Words." Under the British media's self-regulatory system, newspapers are bound to adhere to the commission's code of practice, which includes commitments to accuracy, respect for privacy and avoiding "pejorative reference" to an individual's race, color, religion or disability.

Elizabeth Taylor's Heart Surgery Went Great. Hospitalization Not Caused by Grief of Michael Jackson Death

elizabeth_taylorElizabeth Taylor said Thursday that her heart surgery was successful, adding that "it was like having a brand new ticker." The message on her Twitter page comes two days after she announced she was having heart surgery at an undisclosed hospital to repair a leaky valve. "Any prayers you happen to have lying around I would dearly appreciate," she said Tuesday. In a message Thursday, the Oscar winner thanked fans. "Dear Friends, My heart procedure went off perfectly," she posted. "Thank you for your prayers and good wishes. Know they all helped." The 77-year-old did not go into further detail about her heart condition or the medical procedure. Taylor was briefly hospitalized this summer for "scheduled testing" and checked out "sore, but intact," she said in an online message posted in July.
At the time, her publicist denied tabloid rumors that Taylor's hospitalization was caused by her grief over the sudden death of her close friend Michael Jackson.
Taylor, who uses a wheelchair because of scoliosis, or abnormal curving of the spine, regularly uses Twitter. The social networking Web site allows users to publish messages using 140 characters or less. Taylor posts on her account, DameElizabeth, which has over 165,000 followers. Dame Elizabeth is one of my favorite divas and a real friend to the gay community. The London-born movie star has won two Academy Awards for best actress for "Butterfield 8" in 1961 and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" in 1967. Story From CNN-Entertainment

Twitter A 1 Billion Dollar Company?

Twitter-Logo-415x367At first many shared the same opinions about Twitter, when it launched. Even I asked myself how much more absurd could the idea of modern communication get. However, millions of people around the world embraced this new way of letting friends and colleagues know what they are doing. Soon it seemed that everyone with a phone and a laptop computer began posting these short text-like status updates. One can post texts up to 140 characters in length and contribute to this new medium of exchanging information. Last week the blog TechCrunch first reported about this new gargantuan value of Twitter, but this morning, The Wall Street Journal added more details about the latest fund raiser of $100 million in investments. Now this small, San Francisco based, start-up, booted in March of 2006, has reached a monetary value of $1 billion, as estimated by investors. Although the fashionable micro-blogging site continues to raise millions in financing, it doesn't need the cash. Only recently it raised $55 million, but the company states it has spent less than half of it. Yet, they have big plans to overtake Facebook in terms of number of users. Marc Zuckerberg's successful keeping-in-touch-with-friends platform user base reached 300 million a short time ago. Although Twitter, as a company, still doesn't generate any revenue, there are plans for premium services targeted at businesses. Advertising deals in some form are currently under discussions. It remains a gamble, yet a fascinating one. The biggest question everyone is asking, of course, is whether they can pull it off.

Would You Pay To Twitter?

twitter_on_thincloudOne question has been nagging at Twitter for years: How to make money? A piece of the answer to that question was revealed this week as Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told VentureBeat that Twitter plans to start charging for a premium service.
“Twitter will still be free for everybody and we’ll still tell them to go crazy with it,” Stone told the blog. “But we’ve identified a selection of things that businesses say are helping to make them more profit.”
As of now, the popular micro-blogging site doesn’t charge for its service. It also doesn’t run ads. Some of the services the company reportedly will charge for: Site analytics, which tell businesses about how people are using their Twitter feeds. A “commercial layer” for the social network to be rolled out this year, VB says. Certified accounts, so you can know for sure a person or company is who they say they are. There aren’t many details about the services available. The interview comes on the heels of the release of a Twitter 101 business guide. And it’s another indication Twitter is catering to the business crowd (read: people with money). But what do you all think? Would you pay for extra Twitter services? Do you use Twitter for business? Feel free to discuss in the comments below.

How to Build a Profitable Twitter Account

twitterfriendsTwitter is one of the fastest growing marketplaces on the Internet. The reason why so many people like Twitter is because it is actually the perfect communication tool for people who don't understand and don't want to learn about Internet technology and the technological geek-speak that goes along with it. A few years back, I asked someone for his dad's email address. The son replied telling me that you just email his name. The son was clueless that there was an actual email address behind the shortcut for his dad's name. He did not understand email, and he did not care that he did not understand it. He was able to use it in a manner that was easy for him, and that is all that really mattered. What makes Twitter so popular to the masses is that one does not have to be tech-savvy to use the service. The new user simply needs to locate the profile of the person he or she wants to follow, and then the user simply clicks "Follow". From that day forward, anytime the person "Followed" posts (tweets) new information to his or her micro-blog, Followers will be notified about the message in the Twitter Timeline. The only thing that is really difficult about Twitter is that new people seldom understand that they must "Follow" someone, before they start to receive messages from others. But once someone has chosen to follow a few people, they get the idea behind Twitter very quickly. With its' system of 140 character micro-posts (referred to as "tweets"), users are able to communicate information to other users. Sometimes the tweeted info is a random comment, but often the tweets mean something to somebody. For the average consumer, they can log into Twitter to update grandma about the lives of the grandchildren and to provide links to family pictures. catholic-twitterAlthough the service has been available since 2006, the Internet marketing community was really slow to catch on to the value of the Twitter community. Most Internet marketers hadn't heard of Twitter until 2008. Even then, online marketers were slow to see any real value in the platform. But in 2009, Twitter finally hit its stride in getting the word out about its service, in large part due to the Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN Twitter Follower Challenge. Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) challenged CNN (@cnnbrk) to a race to one million Twitter Followers. On April 17th, 2009, Ashton became the first Twitter user to reach one million followers. CNN passed the mark a few hours later, but Ashton won the race fair and square. Understanding The Value Of The Twitter Community twitter-for-businessIn March of 2008, Twitter was estimated to have one million active users, according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch. But amazingly, over the course of the following year, Twitter was able to expand its user base by 32-37 times, according to which news source you trust for your data. On July 30th 2009, the Philadelphia Enquirer reported that Twitter had "increased its user base by 37-fold to more than 32 million users worldwide, 18-20 million of whom reside in the United States". Now, the naysayers are fond of pointing out that Twitter's attrition rate is quite large, with 60% of new users disappearing after signing up for the service. But if the Philadelphia Enquirer's estimation is correct that "only 40 percent of first-timers become habitual visitors", then the remaining 12.8 million users still make a viable and vibrant Twitter community. Each individual user inside the Twitter community is capable of building his or her own community of Followers. As Ashton Kutcher has taught us, building a Follower list is fairly straight forward - when people are interested in you and what you have to say, they will follow you on Twitter to see what you have to say. To date, nearly 3 million Twitter users have decided that they care enough about Kutcher's life to follow his personal tweets. Of course, I am sure it helps that he occasionally posts pictures of his wife, Demi Moore, in his tweets. Not only did Kutcher share a shot of his Demi's derriere, he also proved that rich people have ugly furniture too. How Can One Benefit From A Large Twitter Following? twitter_bird_follow_me__small__biggerSome of Twitter's 12.8 million active users will benefit handsomely for building a larger Follower's list, while other people will not. It is pointed out by @web2marketer, "It's not about how many Twitter followers you have...the only thing that matters is - are they listening?" This is the key, of course. Some people build huge lists of Followers, but don't say anything worthwhile or interesting. Some are only interested in building their Followers list for the sake of building Followers. If no one wants to listen to what you have to say, it does not matter whether you have 1 Follower or 2.9 million Followers. If no one is "listening" to what you have to say, you will not make any money from your participation in Twitter. On the other hand, if people are "listening" to what you have to say and "clicking" the links you tell them to click, then you have a good chance of earning real money as a result of your Twitter activities. It has been said that the consumer needs to see or hear your name or your marketing message 7 times, before they will trust you enough to buy from you. Professionals in the direct marketíng industry suggest that 82% of all consumers (business people or otherwise) will buy your products or services on the second to the ninth exposure to your marketing message. Twitter allows you to carry a continuous dialog with those most likely to buy what you are selling - through the Public Timeline of the people following you in Twitter. Once people have started to pay attention to what you tell them, and once they start absorbing your marketing message, then gaining your Followers trust is made easier. Once people are listening to you, you can earn their trust fairly quickly. An idea presented by @contentmanager is that television has had 80+ years to perfect its advertising model. Television seems committed to the concept of 42 minutes of content to anchor 18 minutes of advertising. These numbers translate into 70% content to provide an anchor for its 30% advertising. In context, he says that the 70% content is designed to attract attention and win trust, and then the 30% advertising is designed to earn profíts and cover the costs of building content. Understand That It Is A Numbers Game As a successful Twitter marketer, your first goal is always to attract Followers (an audience). Your second goal is to win the trust of your Followers (your viewing audience). Only after you have earned the trust of your Followers should you endeavor to advertise to your Twitter Followers list (to earn revenue). If you have earned the trust of your Twitter Followers, revenue is certain to follow. But, as with anything in business, it is a numbers game. A certain percentage of the number of people exposed to your Twitter profile will become Followers. A certain percentage of those people following you, will actually read what you have to say. A certain percentage of those people will click your links. And if that link leads to a page where you can earn revenue, only a certain percentage of people will buy your pitch. For most people, the only certainty is that they need to grow their audience, and in the case of the Twitter community, they need to grow their list of Twitter Followers. In the numbers game, if you can build up your audience, you can boost your revenue. It is as simple as that. If you drop by our website shown below, we will show you how we can help you build your Followers' list. But after that, it is up to you. It is up to you to gain the interest and trust of your Followers. Once you have done that, then the only thing that will matter is - are they listening? Kid Rock Is Anti-Twitter, "It's gay,"

kidrock_satanKid Rock doesn't have any interest in Twitter, saying, "It's gay," presumably in the sixth-grade sense of the word, the New York Post reports. The hard rocker proved that he won't be suckered into the latest trends, whether those trends are social networking or avoiding slurs based on sexual orientation. And don't ask him about it, either. If you do, he'll tell you to "Twitter this." Kid Rock is saving all his ideas for his albums. If he has a thought worth sharing he's "going to bottle it up and then squeeze it onto a record somewhere." Unfortunately, Kid Rock also said, "I don't have anything to say, and what I have to say is not that relevant." I'm not sure what that means for his records, but it doesn't sound like Twitter is missing much due to his absence.
"It's gay. If one more person asks me if I have a Twitter, I'm going to tell them, 'Twitter this bitch, motherfucker.'
"I don't have anything to say, and what I have to say is not that relevant. Anything that is relevant, I'm going to bottle it up and then squeeze it onto a record somewhere."

Keep Your Money Perez!

perez-hiltonThe economy is in very rough shape as anyone with any sense knows.   Charities have been hard pressed to bring in money.  When one actually turns down funds it can only be because they find the actions of the donor absolutely reprehensible.  Perez Hilton created a stir recently when he tweeted and made a video about his alleged physical altercation with Will.I.Am’s manager.  Apparently he either plans on suing or has sued for damages with the intention of donating the proceeds to the Matthew Shepard foundation. Well, the best laid plans of mice and men are oft to go astray. STATEMENT FROM MATTHEW SHEPARD FOUNDATION REGARDING PEREZHILTON.COM
The Matthew Shepard Foundation was surprised to learn this morning via media reports that blogger Perez Hilton (Mario Lavandeira) has announced he plans to donate, to our organization, the proceeds of a lawsuit he is contesting over an altercation which has been widely reported in recent days.   We had no advance notice or contact from Mr. Hilton or his representatives regarding this proposal, nor any communication since he posted this plan to his website. We do not know the details of the lawsuit, whether it has been filed, the nature of his claims or the likely outcome. But because the lawsuit presumably involves the physical attack prompted by Mr. Hilton's admitted use of an anti-gay slur, the Foundation will be unable to accept any funds obtained in such a manner. We very much appreciate the generosity of the offer to support our continuing work to memorialize Matthew through activism in defense of sexual minorities and in favor of understanding, compassion, and acceptance. But because so much of our work involves education to reduce the use of hateful language against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, or those so perceived, it would be inappropriate for us to benefit financially from circumstances in which such a verbal attack was involved. While we applaud Mr. Hilton's apology to the LGBT community and their loved ones for his use of such a slur, we also feel compelled to point out that use of epithets can often lead to physical violence, as it appears it may have in this case, and that the Matthew Shepard Foundation has worked for more than 10 years to bring to people's attention the consequences of hateful or intolerant language. Judy Shepard
Hilton is  a stain upon the GLBT community. I must applaud the foundation for having the moral conviction to refuse his money. There are some sins that you simply cannot buy away, even in tough financial times.  Since starting his website Hilton has engaged in racist, sexist, and transphobic, behaviour. For this he was dubbed the Queen of mean. Money may satisfy his conscience but it certainly is not enough for everyone.  Even GLADD turned its back on Hilton after he claimed he was so terrified of Will.I.Am’s thug like behaviour that he had no recourse but to use a homophobic slur.  When the foundation alleged that Hilton engages in verbal violence they were very correct.  Language that necessarily devalues another or brings their humanity into question reifies difference and is the basis for many of the crimes that are committed daily against marginalized bodies. Well Hilton, I suppose you can consider this lesson number two in why the language that we use is so important.
