US Dept. of Justice Holds Gay Pride Event. Attorney General Speaks Out

Attorney General Eric Holder addressed the Department of Justice this morning in a speech marking LGBT Pride Month
Good morning. Thank you, Chris [Hook], for your kind words and for all the work that you, Marc [Salans], the Board of DOJ Pride and our EEO staff team have done in organizing today's ceremony. It's a pleasure to join Tom [Perez] in welcoming so many members of the Justice Department family, and so many distinguished guests, here today as we commemorate LGBT Pride Month. I'm glad that Senator [Amy] Klobuchar and Director [John] Clark are with us. And I want to congratulate Chris [Hook] and this year's other award recipients, Councilmember [David] Catania and Attorney General [Doug] Gansler, on their achievements and contributions. I also want to thank our keynote speakers – Jenny Durkan, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, and Sharon Lubinski, U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota – for sharing their thoughts and stories with us and for providing an example of service for us all.
We have much to celebrate today. In the year since we last gathered, our nation – and the Justice Department – have taken steps to address some of the unique challenges faced by members of our country's LGBT community. As you all know, up until last fall, there was not a single line in the nearly 225-year history of the U.S. Code that referred explicitly to gender identity. Today, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act – which the President signed into law last October – does just that, finally protecting our nation's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals from the most brutal forms of bias-motivated violence.
In another important development, in April of this year, the Justice Department concluded that the Violence Against Women Act covers, and more importantly protects, same sex partners. And, just several weeks ago, as part of the department's, and the Administration's, commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, I announced a new Diversity Management Plan and the appointment of Channing Phillips as Deputy Associate Attorney General for Diversity. With this initiative, and with Channing's leadership, we're working to ensure that the Department can effectively recruit, hire, retain, and develop a workforce that reflects our nation's rich diversity, a Department that welcomes and encourages the contributions of its LGBT employees.
I'm grateful for the assistance and guidance that so many of you have given. Our progress would not have been possible without your contributions. And while we have meaningful achievements to celebrate today, we must remember how much more work we have to do to transform today's opportunities into tomorrow's successes. Too many of the challenges that confronted the LGBT community 16 years ago – when DOJ Pride was founded – confront us still today. Too many of the same obstacles that existed then remain for us to overcome. Too many talented men and women cannot, in the words of this year's motto, "serve openly, with pride."
With your help and engagement, we're working to ensure that the Justice Department lives up to its responsibility to provide a work environment where every employee is respected and given an equal opportunity to thrive. That's the goal we share and the achievement we'll keep working toward - together.
Thank you.

Gay Couple To Wed Inside Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Parlor

Same-sex couples have been exchanging vows all over the District since D.C. first began to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples on Tuesday—in gardens, in courthouses, in the office of the Human Rights Campaign, and even in Hello Cupcake. And today, a Georgetown establishment is going to be the site of a same-sex wedding, DCist reports, when the marriage between Keith Spangler and Andreas Vellios takes place at Georgetown’s Ben and Jerry’s. Ben & Jerry’s has a prominent history of supporting several social justice movements—the company even made a commemorative ice cream, Hubby Hubby, when its founders’ home state changed its laws to recognize same-sex marriage—and Jerry Greenfield (the Jerry of Ben & Jerry’s) will be at the ceremony to talk about his company’s commitment to justice and to congratulate the couple. City Councilmember David Catania (SFS ‘90, LAW ‘94), the first openly gay member of the D.C. City Council who introduced the bill legalizing same sex marriage, will also be there, along with Freedom to Marry Director Michael Crawford. Afterward the ceremony, there’s going to be ice cream cake for friends and family of the couple.

Here Is What You Need To Know To Get Married in Washington D.C. (11 Easy Steps):

Effective March 3, 2010, same-sex couples may apply for marriage licenses in the District of Columbia. Are you and your partner ready to get married? If so, here's what you need to know before getting married in Washington D.C.:
Here's How:
  1. Age Requirement The minimum age for marriage in the District of Columbia is 18 years or 16 years with the consent of a parent or guardian. Applicants should bring driver's licenses, birth certificates, passports, or similar official document to show proof of age.
  2. Cost The Marriage License Application fee is $35.00. However, the fee is waived if a Domestic Partnership Certificate is presented at the time of application. The marriage certificate fee is $10.00. The Marriage Bureau only accepts cash or money orders (made out to Clerk, D.C. Superior Court).
  3. Previous Marriages Divorce happens. So does finding love again. If either of you have been previously married, be prepared to show your divorce papers. You'll need to provide the city, state, country of each previous marriage and the ending status, such as, by divorce or death. Home and work telephone numbers for both you and your ex(s) are also requested.
  4. Waiting Period Three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued.
  5. Blood And Other Tests As of September 11, 2008, a blood test is no longer a requirement to obtain a marriage license in the District of Columbia.
  6. Marriage License The Marriage License Application must include social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth for both parties as well as previous marriage information (see above). Also, in order to pick up your license, you must show your receipt for payment. Unfortunately licenses in the District are not issued by mail, so you have to pick it up in person.
  7. Wedding Officiator Even after you apply, your marriage isn't valid unless an ordained and licensed clergymen or justices of the peace officiates over your ceremony. Your "endorser" must be from the same religious society and registered with the Marriage Bureau Section, Family Court.
  8. Ceremony You can request a Civil Wedding performed by a court official in a room that fits up to 15 people. All free of charge. Request it at the time of registration, specifying the date and time you would like to be married and at least 10 days from the date of application. A clerk will call you to confirm a date.
  9. Copies of Certificate You can request a copy of your marriage certificate on the same day as the ceremony for $10 (cash or money order) or by mail at: Moultrie Courthouse 500 Indiana Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20001 Higher fees may apply for triple seal certificates used for adoption and foreign jurisdictions.
  10. Planning Plan your ceremony month-by-month with this same-sex wedding planner. On a budget? Learn how you and your fiance can save a few dollars and still have a beautiful ceremony.
  11. Ring Selection Kathy Belge over at About: Lesbian Life steps you through the process of buying a wedding ring, including deciding on a budget, style and jewelry store.

Washington, D.C. On Track To Allowing Gay Marriages Starting Tomorrow!

Barring interference from Congress or President Obama, gay marriages will be allowed in Washington, D.C. beginning tomorrow. In December, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed a bill to allow same-sex marriages in the nation's capitol. The bill then entered a 30-day review period in Congress. The bill will become law tomorrow unless Congress introduces a joint-resolution, or President Obama fails to sign it into law. Starting tomorrow, same-sex couples can apply for marriage licenses, though they must wait three business days to receive them. AP reporting

Gay Bartender Claims Homophobe Beat Him With Baseball Bat!

SeattleCrime has the story of a gay bartender who claims he was left battered by a homophobe with a baseball bat. But like many tales that take place late at night after a couple rounds, it's still not clear who's telling the whole truth. Police showed up on the scene around 3 a.m., where they found a man who identified himself as a bartender from Capitol Hill's Neighbours in Seattle, Washington. The victim said he was walking with a friend when two men sitting in a silver Mercedes started yelling gay epithets. The bartender says he confronted the men, one of whom got out wielding a baseball bat, hit him over the head and then left. But an eyewitness says there's a little more to it than a simple assault-and-battery. A security guard who watched the attack claims the victim slammed his hands on the trunk of the Mercedes. Rather than attacking him outright, the guard claims the driver was dared by the drunk bartender to hit him. When the victim lunged at the man he was struck in the head with the bat, says the guard. Then hit once more when the drunk bartender -- who repeatedly told responding medics he was a "cowboy" -- lunged again.
When police confronted the bartender with the guard's version of events, he eventually admitted that a friend had taken him away from the scene. Police then asked the bartender if he'd had too much to drink."No, I haven't had too much to drink...I'm a bartender," the man told police. "When I told him that the comment doesn't mean much...he looked confused and then said "Blow me!," Officer Kathryn Andre wrote in her report. "I believed he meant a breathilyzer to show his level of intoxication."
Police are investigating the incident as an anti-gay assault. They're also said to be very disappointed, yet not surprised, that another hired badge stood and watched while someone got their ass beat.

Same-Sex Couples Celebrated A Victory Friday Night In Our Nation's Capital (video)

DC Gay MarriageThere was thunderous applause Friday night at All Souls Church, where Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty signed a bill legalizing same sex marriage. But no one's hearing wedding bells just yet. The measure must pass a 30-day congressional review before it can go into effect. Mayor Fenty called the bill the end to an era of struggle for residents in D.C. He says the city is taking a leap forward in ensuring freedom and equality for all.
"Marriage inequality is a civil rights, political, social, moral and religious issue in this country and in many nations. And as I sign this act into law the District of Columbia from this day forward will set the tone for other jurisdictions to follow in creating an open and inclusive city."
Supporters expect the bill to breeze thru congress. If it passes, you could see same-sex marriages in the district as early as March. Opponents hope to derail that plan.

United States Capital City Voted To Legalize Gay Marriage

dc_gay_marriageThe Associated Press is reporting that the Washington, DC City Council voted Tuesday to legalize gay marriage, giving supporters a victory after a string of recent defeats elsewhere and sending the issue to Congress, which has final say over laws in the nation's capital. Mayor Adrian Fenty has promised to sign the bill, which passed 11-2, and gay couples could begin marrying as early as March if Congress allows it to become law. Democratic congressional leaders have suggested they are reluctant to get involved, though gay marriage opponents say they will try to get it overturned either in Congress or at the polls. The bill had overwhelming support among council members and its passage was no surprise. Two members voted "I do" when their names came up, and when the vote finished a packed chamber erupted into cheers and clapping.
"Make no mistake, 2009 has been one hell of a year for marriage equality," said David Catania, who introduced the bill and is one of two openly gay council members.
The "no" votes included former mayor Marion Barry, now a council member, who voted, "I don't." If the bill becomes law, the district will join Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont in issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. They will be able to wed in New Hampshire starting in January. dc_washington_winterGay marriage supporters have had less success elsewhere recently. Maine voters overturned the state's same-sex marriage law last month. Earlier this month, the New York state Senate rejected a bill that would have allowed gay couples to marry. And New Jersey's legislature, which had been working on a same-sex marriage bill, postponed a recent vote when the measure appeared headed for defeat. Tuesday's vote in the district came after several months of discussion, including two marathon council hearings at which some 250 witnesses testified. Opponents included the Archdiocese of Washington, which said it might have to stop providing adoptions and other services because the law would force it to extend benefits to same-sex couples. But most who testified in this overwhelmingly Democratic city were supporters. Some, teary-eyed, asked the council to let friends, relatives or themselves marry. One man proposed to his partner during his testimony. The law will likely take effect around St. Patrick's Day in this city of 600,000, which is about 1/17th the size of Rhode Island. Congress has 30 working days to reject it, but that has happened just three times in the past 25 years. Still, opponents plan to try. Members of a group called Stand4Marriage, led by local pastor Bishop Harry Jackson, have met with members of Congress to urge them to oppose the bill. Attorney Cleta Mitchell said that after Fenty signs the bill and it goes to Congress, the group will ask a district elections board to put a referendum on the ballot asking voters to overturn it. She said in a statement before the vote that the law is a "decision for the people, not a dozen people at city hall." The group Mitchell represents made a similar request this summer, when the city passed a law recognizing gay marriages legally performed in other states. The board declined to put the issue on the ballot, saying that would violate a city human rights law. Jackson said Tuesday he believed that the group had a "airtight legal case" and that "If it gets to the vote, we win." The group also has a lawsuit pending from earlier this year, when it tried to get an initiative on the ballot asking voters to define marriage as between a man and a woman. The elections board again cited the human rights law in saying no. A hearing in that case is scheduled for January.

Lambda Rising Bookstore To Close Stores in Washington, DC

lambda_rising_bookstoreGay and Lesbian bookstore Lambda Rising will close its two stores in Washington D.C. and Rehoboth Beach. In a statement, founder Deacon Maccubbin said the store was started in order to bring attention to gay and lesbian literature, but the genre is now available in all major bookstores. "The phrase 'mission accomplished' has gotten a bad rap in recent years, but in this case, it certainly applies," he said. rising_Lambda_bookstoreThe store was founded in 1974 on a shoestring budget by Maccubbin, whom we profiled a few years back. The store is located in 1625 Connecticut Ave., its third location. The news comes just weeks after The Washington Blade, the city's weekly gay and lesbian newspaper, announced its closure. Lambda Rising will operate through the Christmas season, and continue to install its holiday window display. The store will hold a liquidation sale after Christmas and close in early January.

City Officials Seek Court Order To Close Gay Party

Male_nudes_wrestlingD.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles is seeking an injunction to shut down the so-called gay Men's Party operating out of a townhouse at 1618 14th St., N.W., saying the gathering is operating as a business without the required license. The action this week in D.C. Superior Court comes 11 days after a gathering participant was found dead on the premises from an apparent accidental fall. It also follows news reports that the Men's Party was operating as a gay male sex club and that the Logan Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission has asked the city to determine whether the gathering was complying with city laws and regulations. The six-page lawsuit says that the Men's Party, as an unauthorized business, is using the townhouse where it operates without a required Certificate of Occupancy designated for a business. The lawsuit says the Men's Party is instead improperly operating under an occupancy permit designated for "a single family dwelling." Defendants in the suit are identified in the court filing as the D.C. Wrestling Club, Inc., David J. Butler, director and owner; David J. Butler; and 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC c/o S. Jaffe. The 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC is identified as the owner of the building. City law "authorizes the attorney general of the District of Columbia to institute an action for injunctive relief to abate the illegal operation of a business without the appropriate certificate of occupancy," the lawsuit says. "Wherefore, plaintiff prays that the court issue an injunction enjoining defendants, David J. Butler, DC Wrestling Club, Inc., and 1618 14th St., N.W., LLC, from operating and hosting "men's parties" at the premises until such time as they obtain the required Certificate of Occupancy from the Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs to engage in legal activity." The suit makes no mention of the Men's Party purported operations as a sex club, however we have been researching and found the sex party operates by proclaiming that it is an organization of men who enjoy "wrestling".
